Does a Trailer With 89 Degree Nose Need Slider or Sidewinder for Making Sharp Turns

Updated 10/05/2015 | Published 10/04/2015

Question:

will the Reese 5AB-E1621-610 hitch pin box extend the trailer back enough to help it not hit the back of the cab, we pull a heartland bighorn 3685RL with the 89 degree turning radius cut in the cap, with a 2015 ram 3500 4x4 dually 6.4 bed 6.7 Cummins. we have a 19k sidewinder now that in winding roads feels like it is pushing us for a lack of better explanation in turns at HI way speeds. we keep the torque checked on the bolts every stop. we dont want a auto slider or a manual pull sliding hitch. we would like to have 19k or 20k rating . do they make a extension AIR RIDE pin box. that will fit our lippert 1621 pin box. also we keep a tight check on our trailer weight so we dont go over and it is prepositioned equally. also keep tire pressure checked truck and trailer. thank you

Since you have a 89 degree nose on your trailer you would not need the Sidewinder pin box that your trailer has to allow you to make sharp turns. However, what you described is not something that would be normally caused by a Sidewinder. I would hate to recommend you a standard pin box only to have the same thing keep occurring. If you are trying to go highway speeds around windy roads with a fifth wheel trailer I can't really offer you a great solution as it sounds like you might just be going too fast for the roads you are travelling.

Before I get into that though, a standard pin box like the part # 5AB-E1621-610 will fit your trailer and you still will be able to make tight turns without interference.

What brake controller are you using. If you feel the trailer pushing you might need to go with a better one that is proportional like the P2 # 90885 that will sense the amount of braking and apply the correct amount of trailer braking. For an install harness you would want the part # 3024-P.
