2004 Dodge Ram Wiring Parts Needed for Fully Functioning 7-Way

Updated 01/28/2025 | Published 01/27/2025

Question:

I have a 2004 RAM with no factory tow wiring installed. Previous owner looks to have installed a 7 pin and a brake controller, but I would like to redo it properly. Can you tell which products I need?

Hey James,

Here are the parts you need to completely redo the wiring on your 2004 Dodge Ram:

- Curt Powered Tail Light Converter w/ 4-Way Flat # C59496
- Universal Installation Kit # ETBC7

The Curt kit gives you the basic light functions while the ETBC7 kit gives you the rest of the parts and wiring needed for a full functional 7-Way, including all of the wiring needed to run to your cab for a brake controller.

If you don't have a brake controller yet (or you want to replace what you have), the Tekonsha Primus IQ # TK90160 is what I recommend checking out. I really like this controller because it's straight-forward without unnecessary frills, all backed by a limited lifetime warranty.

Do you use your truck more for work, or more for towing a camping trailer?

Thanks Jon, My truck has a weird taillight setup from the factory... the bulbs plug into a circuit board, then there's a 5-pin connector that connects to that circuit board. I have no clue which wires on that 5 pin are for turn/brake/reverse. Any ideas? I also saw another 4 pin adapter you guys have that is about half the price. What's the difference? https://www.etrailer.com/Custom-Fit-Vehicle-Wiring/Dodge/Ram+Pickup/2004/C55504.html?VehicleID=20041171631

@JamesS The T-Connector # C55504 is easier to install because it tees in between the OEM connectors for your tail light, but it still has the older Curt module (black box) which is prone to failure after a while which is why I recommend the splice-in kit. You're more than welcome to use the C55504 and just try your luck, I just don't have much confidence in that box is all. I wish I had a wiring schematic to give to you but unfortunately, I don't so you'll need to use a circuit tester # PTW2992 to match the functions of your truck wiring to the Curt wiring.

@JonG Thanks for that insight Jon, this is why I love etrailer. I was under the truck last night and the 4 pin looks factory based on its connections and loom. Not sure if these trucks came with a 4 pin even without factory tow or not, but it seems to be there. If I already have the 4 pin and just want to upgrade it to 7, do I still use ETBC7?

@JamesS Yes, the # ETBC7 is an in-house kit we've put together for this exact kind of situation. Some of the manufacturers have their own versions of this kit, but they are usually lacking something that we include in this kit, like all of the connectors, circuit breakers, and even the mounting bracket for the 4-Way/7-Way. The only other thing I forgot to toss in there is the No-Drill Mount Bracket # 18136 which just gives you a quick and tidy way to secure the ETBC7 socket to your truck. You're more than welcome to use self-tappers to install the bracket that comes with the wiring, but this no-drill option just makes things way easier.
