Why is Towing Capacity Higher on a 2010 Toyota Highlander with Factory Tow Package than One Without

Question:
Why does the Tow package on a 2010 Highlander Base 3.6l V6 increase the towing ability from 2000 lbs to 5000 lbs? As I understand, the package only provides cooling components. I currently have a class III hitch installed so I should be able to tow greater weight, no?

A factory tow package can consist of several different components depending on the manufacturer. Those items could include different suspension, gearing, various coolers, and other items. The bottom line is that you have to go by what the vehicle manufacturer/owners manual says. If your 2010 Toyota Highlander did not come with the factory tow package then you are limited to the capacity specified in the owner's manual for your trim level.
Having a higher capacity trailer hitch will not increase the towing capacity of a vehicle. You still need to go by the manufacturers specified capacities. I would ask a dealer to explain what all is included in the factory tow package, how it is different from models that do not have a factory tow package. If it is just a matter of adding some coolers to get to that max towing capacity then that is easy.
