I was going to write a detailed review here but we did an entire blog post about the hitch and cargo carrier we bought from etrailer, the experience was fantastic and so were the parts for our build! The full review and how we did the install is at https://shantytravelers.com/hitch-carrier-generator-install/

Keep in mind that using the extender will reduce the hitch towing and tongue weight capacity by 50%....

@MikeL yup, I forgot to mention that on my post, but I have since updated it, and this is why we bought a hitch with a 1,000 pound tongue weight, so that when it's reduced by 50% to 500 pounds it would match the extension pretty well. Thanks for the reminder!

@Scott Sweet, you're all hooked up then! Happy travels!

Works great. I needed this to move my trailer back so that I could get the rear doors open on my van. You would think that travel trailer manufacturers would take that into consideration when they design their tongues especially since any extender you choose decreases the weight you can tow!

by:

This hitch extender is well made and exactly what I needed for my van. I have a gear box and rear tire that mynski carrier needed to clear and this hitch was perfect.

by:

just what i needed to drop tailgate with trailer connected

by:

Great hitch extender, heavy duty and well made!

by:

Great solution to set up my bike rack on tv trailer.

by:

Nice heavy duty will work great

by:

Perfect extension for the clearance I n eeded

by:

This is exactly what I needed on my truck. The hitch gave me the reach I needed to launch my boat while keeping the trucks rear end out of the water. The recent tides are high and my trucks tires and rotors would get submerged in the water. With the extension added only a small portion of my tires were in the water. The tide was high that it was spilling out of the ramp.

I do not tow with the extension. I take the time and exchange the hitch in the boat parking lot. It worked perfectly.

Thanks

good product very strong fast delivery

by:

It worked.

by:

Good quality hitch extender, however, ended up not using it because I just wasn’t comfortable with the weight distribution aspect. Ended up buying a Hensley Hitch for the camper. Will not hesitate to use it for my flatbed trailer pulling a lighter load though.

by:

Just what I needed to extend trailer hitch. A bit pricey but it’s rated at 10,000 pounds so it’s heavy duty.

by:

Great product. I need to extend the blue ox tow bar and raise it to pull a Jeep. Etrailer.com as always has what you need an ships fast with great prices.

by:

The items were delivered but were damaged in shipping. Customer service was super helpful, easy to connect with and a replacement was sent immediately. Thank you for the excellent service to resolve the problem.

by:

This thing is heavy duty compared to similar hitch extenders.

by:

Working as expected

by:

Super heavy duty and quality made. Perfect welds and finish. FAR superior than the overseas imports.

by:

Helped make it easier to back up traile r.

by:

Quality product, prompt shipping, great communication.

by:

EXTREMLY GOOD QUALITY AND CUSTOMER SERV ICE

by:

Item as described. Great service super fast shipping. Thanks

by:

Very heavy duty, exactly what we needed.

by:

2 heavy items were shipped in a lightweight box with inadequate shipping tape to secure the box. The box came apart during shipping and the parts were lost

  • Best Extended Ball Mount for Towing a 4,000 lbs Trailer
Hey Ben! All of the hitch extenders like the Gen-Y item # GY89SR are going to reduce your hitch's capacity by 50% so I am not sure that's going to work with your Land Rover's towing capacity. So long as you are not using a ball mount with a bunch of drop the easiest way to get some extra distance is to use the Hidden Hitch Ball Mount item # 80232. The Hidden Hitch Ball Mount item # 80232 is 15-3/4" long from the hitch pin hole to the center of the hitch ball. It does have 2" of drop built...

  • Recommended Hitch Extender w/a 7,500 lbs Capacity
Hey George, welcome back! To get that high of a capacity out of an extension, you'll need the Gen-Y Hitch Receiver Hitch Extender item # GY89SR. This works with a 2" hitch receiver and extends the hitch pin hole out 14". It has a 10,000 lbs towing capacity. The issue you're going to run into though is a hitch extender like the item # GY89SR is going to reduce your hitch's towing capacity by 50%. I wouldn't have thought you had an issues with a F-350 but if your Reese hitch only has a 10,000...

  • Will Using A Hitch Extender Only Reduce The Tongue Weight By 50%
Hey John, The Gen-Y Hitch Receiver Hitch Extender for 2" Trailer Hitches # GY89SR would reduce both the tongue weight and gross towing weight capacity of the motorhome's trailer hitch by 50% to 5k towing/500lb TW, leaving you unable to tow the trailer. You would need to upgrade the hitch on your motorhome in order to use an extension that wouldn't reduce the capacity. What's the year/make/full model # of the motorhome?

  • How Can I Safely Extend My Trailer out 12" While Using My ProPride 3P Weight Distribution System?
Hello Marc, I am sorry for the delay in response. I have looked into every extender we have, and I do not see how you would be able to use any of them and be able to tow safely. With other weight distribution systems you can change out the shank for a longer one, well the ProPride 3P uses a one of a kind 2 part shank design and I do not see that we have a longer one on our site. I have already reached out to ProPride to see if they have one that we do not have listed on our site that will...

  • Recommended Hitch Extender for a Travel Trailer
Yes, it can! The Gen-Y Hitch Hitch Extender item # GY89SR is going to reduce your Ram 1500's towing capacity and tongue weight capacity by 50%. That would leave you with a 5,000 lbs towing capacity and a 500 lbs maximum tongue weight so you'll be good to tow your 3,500 lbs trailer.

  • Recommended Hitch Extender to Clear a Spare Tire When Towing a Trailer
Hey Jennifer, welcome back! To clear the spare tire on your 2023 Bronco Sasquatch, I recommend the Gen-Y Hitch Receiver Hitch Extender for 2" Trailer Hitches item # GY89SR. This 14" extender will clear your spare tire and has a 2" receiver on the end of it for a ball mount. We also have the 8" Long item # C45791 that would also work. You'll want to measure from the hitch pin hole on your Bronco's hitch to the outer most portion of your spare tire to see which one is going to work the...

  • How Can I Extend Out My EZ Hauler Trailer While Using a Fastway E2 Weight Distribution Hitch?
Hello Adam, We can definitely get you set up so you can accomplish getting the ramp up to your tailgate. However, it is not recommended to use a hitch extender with a weight distribution system. The good news is that you can use the Equal-i-zer Weight Dist Shank # EQ90-02-4500 with your Fastway E2. The # EQ90-02-4500 is going to extend you out by 18", if that is too long and you want to stick with the 14" extension then the Curt Weight Distribution Shank # C17122 will be the one for you...

  • Can I Use the etrailer High-Low Fixed Adapter for Tow Bars e85ZV on a Boat Trailer?
Hey Jeremy. I have a solution for you but the etrailer item # e85ZV is not going to work. It's a high low adapter that's only rated for flat towing setups. You can't pull a trailer with it. Instead you'll want to use the Gen-Y Hitch Receiver Hitch Extender for 2" Trailer Hitches item # GY89SR. This one is rated for pulling up to a 10,000 lbs trailer. It's a bit longer at 14" but it's also going to fit a 2" receiver. This shouldn't be an issue with your F-350 but please note that all...

  • Can 2025 GMC Sierra 1500 Use Hitch Extender
Hey Chris, the Gen-Y Hitch Receiver Hitch Extender # GY89SR that you referenced itself has the needed weight capacity for your trailer but you do need to consider that when you use a hitch extender like this you cut the capacity of the hitch it is used in by 50 percent. So your trailer would need to weigh a total of less than 4,600 lbs and have a tongue weight less than 460 lb.

Hello Francis, thanks for reaching out. That is a pretty tall order. The strongest hitch extensions we offer are the TorkLift SuperTruss Hitch Extensions like part # TLE1548 (10,000 lbs towing 500 lbs tongue weight). These can only be used with a TorkLift SuperHitch trailer hitch with stacked 2" receivers. So you would need to install a new trailer hitch on your truck. If you can tell me the year, make and model of your truck I can see what we have available for you. We do have a 14"...

Hey Brandon. The longest hitch extender we have is the 14" long Gen-Y Hitch item # GY89SR. This fits a 2" receiver and has a 10,000 lbs capacity but it will reduce your hitches capacity by 50% like all hitch extenders do. The 15-3/4" Long Hidden Hitch Ball Mount item # 80232 fits a 2" receiver and has a 6,000 lbs tongue weight capacity. It will not reduce your hitch's capacity. • Can A Hitch Extender Be Used With A Front Mount Trailer Hitch To Park A Travel Trailer
Hi Don, Hitch extenders place a lot of stress on the hitch because you're leveraging the weight further out so using one typically drops the capacity by 50% when towing. You'd be doing it in a parking lot situation where you wouldn't really be traveling much just more so maneuvering around so realistically that shouldn't affect you but depending on how much weight you're leveraging there could be a breaking point, we just wouldn't be able to know exactly what that point is. The Curt...

  • Will Adding A Hitch Extension Help With Trailer That Jacknifes Too Easily?
Hey Ben, thanks for reaching out. Backing up those small trailers can definitely be a pain. I'm not going to sit here and act like I could do it either lol. Yes, adding a hitch extension would help create clearance between the truck and the trailer, so you would have more room to work with if/when you jacknife and it would protect your truck. The extension will not help stabilize things though. If anything, it would probably make things worse, and exaggerate the movement even more. Honestly,...

  • Will Thule OutPace 2 Bike Rack Clear Spare Tire On 2020 Jeep Wrangler When Folded Up?
Marcus, you’re on the right track asking about clearance. From the hitch pin hole to the folded rack’s closest point is 4-1/4", and most Wrangler spares stick out around 8-10. That means the Thule OutPace Bike Rack for 2 Bikes # TH39SA won’t fold all the way up without hitting the tire. But good news: it’ll still work just fine in the carry or tilted-down positions, no interference there. In order for it to fit when folded up, you'll need an extender like the Hitch Extender 10" # HES0...

  • Anti-Rattle Device Needed To Help With A Hitch Extender And Bike Rack Setup On A Hummer
Hey Matt, The Gen-Y Hitch Receiver Hitch Extender # GY89SR would have a tiny bit of play since it's not designed to be anti-rattle. Using a hitch extender like this would also reduce the trailer hitch's capacity by 50% since it's leveraging the tongue weight on the trailer hitch further out then originally intended. The anti-rattle device in your bike rack's shank would still work but the extender will cancel that out by rattling in the trailer hitch. You can use an anti-rattle device...

  • I Installed A Curt Hitch But It Does Not Clear The Bumper Enough, Thoughts?
Osvaldo, It looks like with that unique Royal Utility bumper, the bumper sits out farther than usual. You would just need something like the Gen-Y hitch extender # GY89SR. This 14" long extender is going to let you extend out far enough for you to use your ball mount and tow. I will add using any extension is going to reduce the hitches overall capacity by 50%. So your Curt hitch would drop to 8,000lbs. Unfortunately since we have not been able to install a hitch on a vehicle with that...

  • Extension for 2016 Chevy Silverado 2500 To Clear Trailer Jack
Hey Leon! What kind of trailer do you have? We do have some extenders for a 2" hitch that have gross towing weight of 10,000 lbs like the # RM-071-1075 and # GY89SR. However, the issue with these is that they will reduce the capacity of your hitch by 50%. Since it is a 2" hitch it is probably on the lower side for that truck so 50% capacity might not be enough. Do you know how much of an extension you need? Something like the Patriot Hitches Drop Hitch Stacked Receivers # PH73NR will...

  • Looking For 12" Hitch Extension For 7,100 lb Travel Trailer
Hello Jerry, thanks for reaching out. We do offer a hitch extender that will work with your class 4 hitch, such as the Gen-Y Hitch Extender for 2" Trailer Hitches # GY89SR. The big downside of using a hitch extender is that it decreases the tongue weight capacity of your hitch by 50%. So if your class 4 hitch for example is rated for 12,000 lbs, the hitch extender will reduce that capacity to 6,000 lbs. This will only be an option for you if your class 4 hitch is rated for like 15,000 lbs...

  • Is 14" or 18" Extension Better for 16" Clearance Needed for Spare Tire?
Hey Charles! For your application it sounds like 16" would get you right where you need to go. The correct length depends on the product, but you're likely pretty safe to go with a 14" extension since most hitch accessories have a little extension on them already. For a 14" extension we have the Gen-Y Hitch Receiver Hitch Extender # GY89SR as a solid option that I recommend going with. What are you planning on using at the other end of the hitch receiver?

It will work so long as your tow vehicle has a towing capacity over 7,000 lbs and a tongue weight capacity over 800 lbs. Using any hitch extender like the Gen-Y Hitch item # GY89SR you were looking at cuts your vehicle's towing capacity and tongue weight in half.

  • Solution for Hitch Extension With 1,000 Pound TW and 10,000 Pound GTW Capacity on 2000 F-350
I have a possible solution, but none of the 14-16" extensions have a high enough capacity. The only thing that comes close is the Gen-Y # GY89SR which has a gross towing weight of 10,000 lbs, but the max tongue weight is only 500 lbs. This would also reduce the capacity of your hitch by 50% like many hitch extenders do. If you can handle it being slightly shorter, what you could use instead is the Brophy Ball Mount for 2" Hitch # BH20. This is 13-1/4" long and has the capacity you need....
