Is 14" or 18" Extension Better for 16" Clearance Needed for Spare Tire?

Updated 10/22/2025 | Published 09/25/2025

Question:

How do you calculate the length of hitch extension you need? I have a Rigd UltraSwing on the truck and I measured 16 from the outer most hole of the trucks hitch to total clearance from the spare tire. Is that a 14 or 18 extension?

Hey Charles!

For your application it sounds like 16" would get you right where you need to go. The correct length depends on the product, but you're likely pretty safe to go with a 14" extension since most hitch accessories have a little extension on them already.

For a 14" extension we have the Gen-Y Hitch Receiver Hitch Extender # GY89SR as a solid option that I recommend going with.

What are you planning on using at the other end of the hitch receiver?

Hey Charles, how did things turn out with the 14-inch Gen-Y hitch extender on your truck? Did it give you enough clearance with the Rigd UltraSwing? Your update could make it easier for the next person working through the same setup.
