Anti-Rattle Device Needed To Help With A Hitch Extender And Bike Rack Setup On A Hummer

Updated 12/15/2025 | Published 11/28/2024

Question:

I intend to use the extender for a bike rack on a hummer. Is the fit sufficiently tight that the bike rack will remain stable. The bike rack itself has a metal ball that presses against the inside of the hitch to take up slack. Thanks.

Hey Matt,

The Gen-Y Hitch Receiver Hitch Extender # GY89SR would have a tiny bit of play since it's not designed to be anti-rattle. Using a hitch extender like this would also reduce the trailer hitch's capacity by 50% since it's leveraging the tongue weight on the trailer hitch further out then originally intended. The anti-rattle device in your bike rack's shank would still work but the extender will cancel that out by rattling in the trailer hitch. You can use an anti-rattle device # e99007 on the extender to help prevent the rattling, but with the bike rack sitting further out it will a bit bouncier of a ride for it and could wear on it more. You'll also want to check your bike rack's manual to ensure that the manufacturer allows for use with a hitch adapter as some manufacturers will says this voids your warranty.

Hey Matt, how did things turn out using the Gen-Y hitch extender with your bike rack on the Hummer? Did the anti-rattle device help keep everything more stable on the road? Your update could make it easier for others setting up a similar rack.
