4-Way Trailer Connector Installation

Because the color/function of the new connector wires may not match the color/function of your vehicle wires, be sure to use a tester (sold separately) to determine the function of each wire on your vehicle's tail light wiring harness before installing this connector. Once you've determined the matching functions, use quick-splice or butt connectors (sold separately) to connect the corresponding wires on the trailer connector.

The number 1 reason trailer wiring comes up faulty is a bad ground, so make sure your ground wire has a solid and clean connection to metal. To make this connection, you'll need a ring terminal and a self-tapping screw (sold separately).

Wiring Configuration

Wire Color Wire Function
Green Right turn and brake light
Brown Tail lights
White Ground
Yellow Left turn and brake light

Quick Tips:

We install a lot of wiring harness around here, so we thought we'd share a few tips we've picked up over the years:

  • Butt connectors - especially heat-shrink ones - provide the most secure, longest-lasting connection, so we'd recommend you grab a few and swap them out for the quick-splices in this kit.
  • Use a circuit tester on the plug terminals once the harness is installed to make sure everything's working. There's nothing worse than figuring out that you have a bad ground or a faulty connection right before you're about to hit the road.
  • Be sure to put a little bit of dielectric grease on the 4-way plug to protect the terminals from dirt, grime, and corrosion.

  • Trailer Wiring Harness Recommendation for a 2004 Pontiac Montana
Actually, all you will need to do is install a wiring harness, # C55355, on your 2004 Pontiac Montana. But if you wanted to use those factory wires, because you have separate wires for turn signals and brake lights, you would first need to install a converter. The converter, # RM-732, takes the separate signals and combines them which is what a trailer uses. To wire it up your yellow wire will go to the yellow wire on the converter, green will go to green, white will go to white, and red...

The longest available vehicle-end 4-flat plug and lead like the 48 inch Hopkins # HM48044 you mentioned is a 72 inch (6 foot) plug. There are two of these available, with one that comes with a circuit tester and splices and the other without. - 4-Pole Hardwire Kit with Circuit Tester # 18252 - 4-Pole 72" Long Vehicle End # 18172 For the latter kit - without the circuit tester and splices - you can connect the wiring with the Butt Connectors # 05731-5. It sounds like you are looking for a vehicle side 4-way connector without a converter. If this is the case, we have the 4-Pole Vehicle End, # 18172, available. If you are needing a connector for your trailer, Wesbar makes the 4 Pole Flat Connector with Jacketed Cable, # W787264. Your vehicle information states that you have a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta. If you will be towing with this vehicle, it will require you to use a wiring harness with a converter like the Custom Fit Wiring Harness with...

  • How To Determine if a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a 7-Way
If you look at the back of your 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee and see a wiring connector that looks like the Tow Ready Wiring harness part # 20135 then you have a 7-way. Another option you could have is a 4-way which would look like part # 18172, or you might not have any connector at all. To add a 4-way you would first want the Tow Ready Wiring harness part # 118394. If you needed to upgrade to a 7-way you would need the 4-Way to 7-Way adapter part # 37185 after installing the #118394. For...

It does not appear that any of the 6-Way to 4-Way adapters are going to work because of the unique pin out that is on the 6-Way on your 2013 Harley trike. You would essentially need to make an adapter to match the pin out. You will need a trailer side 6-Way, # PK11604, and a vehicle side 4-Way, # 18172, cut to the length you need. Then you just attach the wires in the right place to match the 6-Way you have. On the 4-Way end the white wire is ground, yellow is left turn and stop, green...

  • Using Ford LED Hitch Cover on a 2014 Ford Focus when Flat Towing and When Driving
Since you are towing the Focus behind the RV, you would not use wiring harness # 118549 for that purpose. This harness would be used for the Focus to tow a trailer and not to tow the Focus with the motor home. I do understand what you are trying to accomplish though and why you selected that harness; the Ford LED hitch cover # CR-017F has to plug into something! But if you want to use the cover all of the time and not just when flat towing the Focus you will need to have the wiring harness...

  • Adapting 5 Pin Round Connector on a Trike to 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector
I have some options for you, however, I am not familiar with an adapter to convert a 5 pin round trailer connector to a 4-pole flat trailer connector. Since your trike has a 5 pin trailer connector, the extra wire on your 5 pin connector will serve one of two purposes. It is either the brake light signal or a constant 12-volt power feed to the trailer. You can easily determine which case you are dealing with by using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 on the plug. Activate the turn...

There is a special converter for this, # RM-732. • Why Does 2017 Jeep Renegade Require Custom Fit Trailer Wiring Harness
There's a couple reasons you'll have to install a custom trailer wiring kit for your 2017 Jeep Renegade and wouldn't be able to just hardwire in a 4-way. Mainly your taillight circuits on your Jeep aren't the right style for trailer wiring. Also your vehicle taillights aren't rated for the extra amperage draw of trailer wiring so you need a kit...
