Brake Controller Installation for 1991 Ford E-350 Van Towing an 18 Foot Trailer

Updated 03/01/2010 | Published 02/26/2010

Question:

I have just bought a 18 ft trailer to pull my small John Deere 2300 . The trailer has electric brakes on two wheels . Do I need to install a brake controller ? If so what kind would you recommennd . If not What is required to make the brakes work properly. The trailer was wired with a 7 pole Pollak harness. I am going to pull the trailer with a 1991 E 350 Ford . As you can see I have no knowledge about trailer braking systems and I would appreciate your comments and help, Thanks

A brake controller is definitely a good idea and is the only way to activate electric trailer brakes. For your 1991 Ford E-350 I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885. This is a high rated and economically priced brake controller that gets good reviews.

For wiring I have included a wiring from scratch FAQ below. I also included a video showing brake controller installation on a similar vehicle.

You basically need three things to wire a brake controller. First is the brake controller like the one I mentioned above. Second you will need a 7-Way Installation Kit, # ETBC7, or 6-Way Installation Kit, # ETBC6. Finally you will need a 4-Pole Trailer Connector, like # 18172 if not already installed on your vehicle.
