Using Ford LED Hitch Cover on a 2014 Ford Focus when Flat Towing and When Driving

Question:

2014 Ford Focus SE hatchback manual trans. Parts: Tow Ready - Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring Code: 118549 Pilot – Ford Brake and Tail Light L.E.D. Trailer Hitch Cover Code: CR-017F Roadmaster - HyPower Diodes Part #154 One option I would like to support is towing the Focus behind an RV using the Pilot LED installed in the Focus receiver as a 3rd brake light. Do I install the Roadmaster diodes on the Focus “source” harness or the back light unit harness? I would say on the “source” harness before any plugs. Therefore, in-order Source diodes plug Tow Ready plug back light units

Since you are towing the Focus behind the RV, you would not use wiring harness # 118549 for that purpose. This harness would be used for the Focus to tow a trailer and not to tow the Focus with the motor home. I do understand what you are trying to accomplish though and why you selected that harness; the Ford LED hitch cover # CR-017F has to plug into something!

But if you want to use the cover all of the time and not just when flat towing the Focus you will need to have the wiring harness installed, # 118549, and plug the LED light into it when not flat towing the Focus.

Then to use it when towing the Focus you would need a vehicle side 4-Way flat, # 18172, spliced into the tow bar wiring that you are using. Then you can just plug the light into this separate 4-Way when needed. No diodes required.
