Plan your tools: drill, measuring/marking tools, a saber saw or hand-nibblers, file, and self-tapping screws. Some hatches note an access cover diameter of 5" with a 5-1/2" hole, so confirm your cut size before you start. Deburr and finish cut edges for a clean fit and smoother seal; a template from the packaging can speed marking.

Measure your current door and the opening first. Some options list a 5-1/2" diameter x 3/8" deep cutout with a 5" hole opening, so match those specs to your wall.
