Weight Distributing Hitch

Create a stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight-distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight-Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight-distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight-distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight-distribution system.

Serrated Washer System

Unique Features of Reese Trunnion-Bar Weight Distribution

The easy-to-use, serrated washers on the Reese system make adjusting the tilt of the weight-distribution head a snap. This is a huge improvement over the standard pin-and-washer method, which involves piling washers - one on top of another - onto a difficult-to-access pin. The serrated-washer system lets you easily loosen, adjust and tighten a single washer and nut on either side of the head for simple, secure positioning.

The trunnion spring bars of this system slide into the weight-distribution head for quick, easy installation. With a tapered design and hot rolled steel construction, these bars offer superior flex, ensuring a smooth, controlled ride for both your tow vehicle and your trailer. In addition, these specially designed bars have rounded, hooked ends, making them the only kind of spring bars that can function with Reese's active-style, dual-cam sway control (sold separately).

Thoroughly torture tested between 7500 lb camper and 10500 lb trailerable a houseboat. Bought the anti-sway cams separately off [online] due to availability. Combined as a system, this stopped anti-sway and saved my butt during a hard downpour rain and side winds. The cams were the difference in pulling off to get to safety vs laying on the side of road upside down like some 18 wheeliers.

Yes, its expensive. No, you dont buy another one unless you sell it with the camper / trailer.

Ive used this on 10K houseboat trailers and 7.5K campers, this is the one you are looking for. The adjustable head makes all the different in adjusting weight between front and rear truck axles. It really does remove over understeer on the truck when set correctly. This was tested from 60 - 75 MPH, no death wobble. Purchase the anti-sway arms, after one good wind sheer, your nerves will thank you.

This was my first encounter with etrailer and I have to say it was hands down the best service I have ever received! Really.. And no I don't work for etrailer!!!!!! We use to live in a country where good service was just a way of life. Today, lets face it, service is terrible! But not etrailer.. I placed an order for this product online and selected the normal shipping method by ground. I immediately got the normal email "thank you for your order". But then I got another email from an actual person, George.. George let me know the product was in their distribution facility and will ship in 24-48 hours.. To my surprise, the order shipped the same day and I received another email from a Frank stating they took the liberty of upgrading my shipping to 3 to 5 days express shipping instead of the normal 5 to 7 days at no charge to me! So my response to this was "wow great service thank you!".. Again to my surprise I received an email from a Nikki who thanked me for my positive feedback. On a side note can you believe, they actually put their direct phone with extension along their email address on the bottom of their emails so you can actually get in touch with them? I didn't think this type of stellar service existed anymore.. Kudos to etrailer.. Ok, I think I almost forgot to write about the actual product.. The product was made very well, hooked up with no issues, and when I had questions on adjustments, you guessed it, i called and emailed folks at etrailer and they actually helped me!!!! They could have sent me a box of cracker jacks and I would have given then an excellent review! :) Keep up the great work etrailer... I won't shop anywhere else for my trailer needs..

Truck ended up in the shop. Blown engine. We cancelled the order for the time being. Sales rep was very helpful both in helping to order the hitch and canceling the order as a result of the engine problem.

I will seriously consider reordering a hitch from etrailer. The rep was very helpful on
helping us purchase the right hitch. It was delivered at the approximate time as promised. Unfornately we had to return it as the truck is in the garage.

Over satisfied with the Reese Straight Line hitch!! It does everything it says it will with no question!! I had a regular Reese equalizer and got a lot of sway with my 34 foot Springdale behind my 2016 Ram 1500 ecodiesel, and the Reese Straight Line eliminated ALL of it!! The installation process is a little tricky but with the instructions and the video etrailer has on YouTube, it worked out just great!! Completely satisfied with the help and knowledge from etrailer!!!!

This is my second weight distribution hitch, which was made by Reese and the first one was used from 1993 to 2017. Although I bought the trunnion bar hitch, as it was the same type as my first hitch, there are changes in the design of the hitch, which I believe will be improvements over the older design. I'm ready to get on the road with this Reese hitch pulling my travel trailer.

by:

Updated my weight distribution hitch from 800lb to 1200lb. Vanessa helped me get what I needed. It was shipped and delivered quickly and at a fair price.

by:

Lighting fast shipping!! Just received my hitch, and installed it last night. Straight forward instructions really took about an hour and a half by time I had it all adjusted and fit right. It seems to be well made and very heavy duty. I am super pleased with E-Trailer; their customer service is top notch (Andi Rocks!!).
I highly recommend E-Trailer for any hauling help..

  • Can Weight Distribution Systems Be Used on a Trailer Equipped with a Surge Brake Actuator
Some surge brake actuators cannot be used with weight distribution systems, but many can be safely used together. Sway control systems will make a surge brake actuator inoperable as they do not permit enough trailer movement, or they slow movement too much. You would need to select a weight distribution system like Reese part # RP66022 that does not have sway control. Check the owner manual for the trailer or the surge brake actuator to see if it can be used with a weight distribution...

  • What Capacity Weight Distribution System is Recommended for a 750 Pound Trailer Tongue Weight
You would choose a weight distribution system based on the tongue weight of the trailer. You would want a system that has a tongue weight capacity range that encompasses the trailer tongue weight loaded and ready to tow. With a Tongue weight of 700 to 750 pounds, a system rated for 600 to 1,200 pounds tongue weight would be a good fit. Having a system rated a little higher will have a stiffer ride when you tow, but it is much better than to have a system that is rated too low. With a 600...

The trunnion bars on your Reese Weight Distribution System, # RP66022, should not fall out of the head assembly when driving down the road or during normal turns. When backing the trailer or turning very sharply the bar could come loose especially if the spring bars are not very tight. The hollow shank ball mounts typically carry a lower weight rating than what you are looking for. You do not mention what kind of rise/drop you are needing, but for a 12,000 pound rating I would recommend a forged ball mount. Part # BWBMHD30010 offers a 1 inch rise or 2 inch drop, part # 40331 has a 3 inch rise or 4 inch drop, and part # 40332 features a 5 inch rise or a 6 inch drop. • Recommended Weight Distribution System for 7410 Pound Utility Trailer Towed by 1999 Chevy Suburban
Anytime the loaded trailer weighs 50 percent or more than the weight of the vehicle, weight distribution is recommended. In addition to eliminating the rear end squat, using weight distribution can lead to performance increases in steering, traction, and braking while also decreasing trailer sway. For a trailer and load such as yours, I would recommend the High Performance Trunnion System, part # RP66022. This system is designed for trailers with tongue weights ranging from 600 to 1200...

  • How to Identify Weight Rating of Weight Distribution Springs Bars
Unless there is obvious damage to your weight distribution spring bars - rust, chipped-off material, or a clearly inappropriate bend - they should still be functional. On a trunnion style bar like Reese # RP22225 there is a bend at the trailer end of the bar which engages with the dual cam sway control. On a round bar system there are bends at both ends. The thing is you need to know the tongue weight they are rated for. Spring bars can look very much the same but be rated differently....

  • Safety of Towing Without Weight Distribution System
You have 3500 lbs to play with here, so towing that trailer should not be a problem. You do not need the w/d system to extend the towing capacity of the hitch, but the systems do have other benefits. Because a w/d system removes some of the tongue weight from the rear axle and transfers it to the front axle of the tow vehicle, using the system can increase performance in steering, traction, and stopping while also decreasing trailer sway. You have a fairly long trailer, and I am not sure...

I did some research on your Explorer and found that the Explorer will have different maximum tow ratings depending on how it is equipped.
