Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your vehicle when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your vehicle level, maintain even load distribution and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your vehicle sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your vehicle and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Firestone Ride-Rite air spring airline installation

Adjustable Air Pressure

The air pressure in your Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your vehicle by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and to soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your vehicle's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Firestone Ride-Ride air spring components

Air Spring Construction

Firestone's double-convoluted Ride-Rite air springs are designed to give you maximum load support and enhance the performance and ride comfort of your vehicle. The rubber springs provide cushioning between your suspension components and operate at up to 100 psi. The springs have four layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Air Spring Installation

Each Ride-Rite kit includes custom-fit brackets that connect to your axle and frame. The brackets provide the mounting points for the air springs. Drilling may be required for some applications.

I mounted the Firestone airbag system on my 2008 Toyota Tacoma pickup. It was not as easy as the video makes it look (especially on the drivers side) but, it it turned out great. I mounted the compressor in the compartment behind the passenger seat behind the driver (see pic). I mounted the gauge and switch in the compartment between the driver and passenger (see pic). The airbag pictures are when they were holding 70 lbs pressure checking for air leaks. The first picture of the pickup is with 5 lbs air pressure in the bags and the second is with 50 lbs air pressure in the bags. When driving with 5 lbs in the bags it has the normal smooth ride and does a good job at 30 lbs of keeping the back end from sagging when I pull my boat.

Well worth the purchase. I can now eliminate rear sag and protect my rear springs all while hauling heavier loads with comfort and stability. The ride is smooth when empty as well.

These helpers have provided the extra support I needed on my Toyota Tacoma truck for towing my loaded 7k dump trailer. Ordering and delivery was straight forward and without problems and installation went without incident.

My Tacoma had the Carolina Squat look going on, I have a camper shell, and typically have a 12' kayak on top. This completely fixed the problem an improved not only the look, but also the headlight aim on my vehicle. Easy to follow instruction, Easy Installation, took me less than and hour to install.

Everything arrived as ordered and in a very timely manner. My son is in the process of installing these as well as the tie downs for his new camper. So far, fairly smooth sailing!

They are not a cure-all; but do help when hauling heavy loads, or towing a travel trailer with my 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road Pick-up. Working fine after a year. Had a problem with leaks and pressure drop at first. Had to cut and re-install air lines and connectors at the airbag end, several times. But eventually got them to hold pressure. Now only slight air loss over several days. They really helped to prevent sagging rear end, and minimize bucking when towing a small travel trailer with my Toyota Tacoma. I still finally had to go with a load distribution hitch with anti-sway device to completely minimize sway while towing.

A little more than bolt in but take your time and follow the directions it turns out good.

Product arrived quickly. These air helper springs look very well made. They were relatively easy to install. The difficulties I had were related to the equipment and tools I had (or didn't). I only had hand tools. So the install took a lot longer than suggested. All the parts fit and matched up without interfering with any parts on the vehicle. We'll see how they stand up to use over time.

I bought the Firestone Ride-Rite airbags for my 2014 Toyota Tacoma SR5 because the rear end sagged way too much when hauling our four mountain bikes on my Thule platform rack. The installation was very straightforward and took roughly 4 hours. A year later, the airbags work awesome, and I wish I had know to add them when I first bought the truck five years ago!

Just what i was looking for to level out my Tacoma when we pull our camper.

- F2407
by:

The Firestone Ride-Rite vehicle suspension system is excellent. It allows me to easily increase the air pressure to compensate for camper tongue weight and lower pressure for a soft ride when no tongue weight exists. The installation at etrailer was superior as always. Outstanding company to do business with.

Took a few hours to get it completed, and went in as described. Have not had opportunity to test them out under load, but figure they would perform as expected. Instructions were not totally accurate, 4 bolts had changed size (to a smaller bolt than listed), but anyone with common sense could figure it out. (I did. LOL!) Wish "they" had included a "T" to inflate them equally, but purchased one at Lowes for about $6. I also "beefed up" the hose around sharp corners to protect them from getting damaged.

Comments
Working great! Added an on-board compressor to the unit and use it to tow Travel Trailer. Does not get a LOT of use, but when it does, its great!

2016 Toyota Tacoma

Kit cam quickly and the instructions were clear enough if you are mechanically inclined. If your not then don't try this because you need to have a good safe way to raise you vehicle pull the wheels off the back and work under for a couple hours. That being said once installed on my 2016 Tacoma the performance was excellent. I am currently running about 12 psi. And the hitch is about 1 1/2" higher with no load. Hooked onto my mower trailer with mower and it handled it as easily as my 2500HD. Mower is a JD 27hp 60" zero turn commercial. Haven't hooked the camper up to it but this definitely made the towing on my Taco much better. Great addition to any smaller or 1/2 ton truck that needs some beef in the back. Truck will be safer to handle loads if you do your air to match the load. I just use a bicycle pump to adjust. Easy to be accurate with each side.

2010 Toyota Tacoma

Installed this product on a 2010 Toyota Tacoma with the factory towing package. First off, like many projects like this, you must have the right tools. You'll need two bigger sockets that don't commonly come in off-the-shelf tool kits. When you open the package, check the bolts to make sure you have the right size sockets before starting or you'll take a few breaks going to the auto parts store for tools. Secondly, the instructions are decent but do not provide a good representation of how the parts fit together on the truck. (ie. heat shield, etc). Go to the etrailer.com website of your product for the installation video.....its the best way to make sure you have oriented everything correctly. Third, the instructions say jack the truck up at the axle. I found its much easier to jack the truck up by the frame to allow for maximum room between the frame and the springs to fit the unit inbetween and have enough room to work. The toughest part is the upper bracket and the five bolts associated with fitting this part to the frame and the air spring. Its easiest to only put two of the four bolts that attach to the air spring to allow the upper bracket to rotate. Then attach 3/4" bolt that attaches the upper bracket to the frame. Then put the other two bolts to attach the upper bracket to the air spring.....Note that this part is by far the most difficult to get to and tighten down. Both sides offer challenges. Drivers side you have to contend with the fuel tank, passenger side you contend with the muffler. After you get this part done, lower the frame to reduce the space between the frame and the springs to allow for the connection to the springs. Nothing difficult with this but the bolts are very tight and the long.....so you'll make quarter turns on the wrench for what seems like eternity. When this is done, thread the air hose towards the back of the truck. No need to complete this task at this time but its good to get it out of the way of the tire. Raise the jack up again to put the tire back on then lower. Finish by running the air hoses to the back. Note the nuts are very tight and you'll crank these a 1/4 turn at a time......very slow and laborous. If you have air tools, this is definitely the way to go. All-in-all not too difficult to install and you'll like the abilty to adjust the sag on the rear end due to payload. Ride quality is much better as well.

2014 Toyota Tacoma

So, I've had these airbags on my truck for a year now. They are installed on a Toyota Tacoma. I tow a 7 x 14 7000GVW trailer with this truck for my business regularly (not fully loaded of course, as the truck is rated for 6500). I believe so strongly in the improvement in ride quality and safety after installing these, I now have air bags on all my vehicles that are used for towing. The difference is truly night and day. The elimination of the squatting issue helps tremendously with braking. You're much less fatigued after a long drive with the trailer because it is much less stressful also. If you're curious, about them, you're headed the right direction, just get them, and you'll be glad you did. Install was done with great care and meticulous detail, and took a novice with good mechanical aptitude an afternoon to complete.

I purchased the Firestone Ride-rite Air Springs for my 2014 Tacoma and watched the video provided by etrailer.com. It was a relatively easy installation and the video was very helpful. The project took me a little over three hours to complete and it all works perfectly. I'm happy that I chose the Firestone air springs and etrailer.com for my project.

- F2407
by:

The only issue is on the Tacoma when not using the air bag i keep 6 psi in them and it is really not a comfortable ride it seems to bounce bad over low spots on the road and it must sit higher than the rubber axle bump pads cause it feels like it bottoms out hits hard then bounces up.

Comments
I called my contact at Firestone to see if we could help improve your ride quality when you arent towing. My contact said that since youre having such hard bottom outs, it sounds like the brackets may be closer to each other than what is standard. A quick measurement can check this. With no air in the air bags, on a flat, level surface, and nothing in the bed of the truck, measure the distance between the top and bottom bracket. For your F2407 air bag kit, the brackets should be 4-1/2 to 5-1/2 inches apart. If they are closer than 4-1/2 inches apart, please let me know and, if possible, send photos of your air bag installation.

My fault. I grossly looked at all the parts and separated them for each side. Then went ahead and put the truck on jack stands and removed the tires. In step one I needed a 5/8-18 jam nut, none were to be found, anywhere. Iand I only slit the plastic sack and layer it open on the bench. All other hardware accounted for, except the two jam nuts. Putting the tires back on now to go to the store to buy a couple. Not pleased!

Just finished installing the Ride Rites on my 2013 Tacoma TRD double cab. I watched the etrailer "how to" video first which was a great help! The Firestone Rite Ride has preformed great for me. I haul heavy loads at times with no problem. Installing was done in about an hour. I have recommended these to other guys I know when they ask what I has put on my truck to keep the level profile with such loads.

I ordered this item on a Tuesday and it arrived approximately one week later as promised with the standard UPS free shipping. The day before (Monday) I had ordered two tires on rims with the standard free shipping. The shipping was upgraded at no expense to me and I received the shipment on Wednesday - two days later! I am pleased to have learned about this website.

Very easy to install, the videos made it even easier. So far they work great. 200 gal. water tank only took 30 lb. of air to make the truck sit and handle like nothing on it. (It would be nice to have onboard air)

  • Axle Bracket Extension Kit for Lifted 2012 Toyota Tacoma
The correct spacer you will need for the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs part # F2407 on your 2012 Toyota Tacoma is actually going to be the Firestone Axle Bracket Extension Kit part # F2506. If they are too long then you can just trim them but the Firestone Ride-Rite Axle Spacer Brackets for Lifted Vehicles part # F5557 and part # F5558 won't be your best options.

I will be happy to help with the Firestone air bag helper springs # F2407. They can be routed to one valve and doing so would be the only way to fill both bags at the same time with equal amounts of air. It is called a single path. If you would like to be able to adjust the air pressure in the air bags from the comfort of the truck cab then I recommend adding a compressor kit, # F2158. This will also be a single path option. I have linked some videos showing example installations of...

You will just need to make sure that you do not overinflate them. We do not have any confirmed fits for the Ride-Rite system on your 2000 Coachman Catalina, but most of the systems that we have for passenger vehicles have a range of 5 psi - 100 psi. If you look in your installation...

  • Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for a 2007 Toyota Tacoma PreRunner
Since the load in trailer and bed of your 2007 Toyota Tacoma will sometimes be different I would recommend an air kit that allows you to adjust the amount of suspension support you have. The Firestone kit part # F2407 would be your best option. This will allow you to fine tune the amount of suspension support you need. For a compressor kit to make maintaining the pressure in the bags easy you would then also want the part # F2158.
