Rear Suspension Support

SumoSprings helper springs are great for pickup trucks. Towing or hauling a heavy load can cause sag as your factory suspension compresses under the weight of the load. This means that the rear axle is trying to support not only the extra load but also the truck's weight. And because there is less weight on your front axle, your front tires make less contact with the road, which causes problems with traction, steering, and braking. SumoSprings upgrade your factory suspension to level your vehicle, improve driving performance, and keep your ride comfortable.

SumoSprings Rebel installed showing separation of 2-piece springs

The innovative 2-piece design of these Rebel springs allows for unlimited suspension travel. This means that there will be more movement in your suspension when you're unloaded or off-roading, which makes your ride smoother and more comfortable.

Each spring has 2 pieces. One piece attaches to the frame of your vehicle. And the other piece attaches to the axle, typically above your existing factory leaf spring. The pieces come together to provide support when you are towing or hauling a heavy load. When you're unloaded, they separate so that they don't restrict the movement of your suspension. The closed-cell urethane springs also act like a shock absorber to dampen road vibration.

SumoSprings compressing under load

SumoSprings provide progressive load control - the more you load them, the stiffer they become. With a lighter load, the springs will compress easily for soft engagement and a less bumpy ride. The springs can also compress by as much as 80 percent to support a heavy rear load and to help your factory suspension bear up under the load. This evens out the weight, which levels your vehicle and ensures that your front tires are making better contact with the road. A level ride means that you have improved driving control, ensures safe headlight aim, and helps to minimize sway. The springs also support your factory suspension, which helps prevent sagging and reduces bottoming out.

The springs work independently from one another to support each side of your vehicle. This action helps to reduce body roll when you make a sharp turn. This also helps compensate for an off-center load.

Durable, Custom-Fit Springs

These microcellular urethane springs are tough. They resist abrasion, oil, salt, and UV rays that can more quickly wear out other springs, and they perform well in temperatures ranging from -25 F to 200 F (-33 C to 93 C).

SumoSprings expand and compress vertically with minimum expansion to the sides, so they won't be damaged by nearby mechanical parts, and they fit safely into tighter spots. And unlike air springs, SumoSprings require no maintenance or adjustment.

This kit comes with custom-fit brackets that are designed to easily bolt onto your vehicle.

Video Transcript for In-Depth Review of the SumoSprings Rebel Custom Helper Springs

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this SumoSprings Rebel Custom Helper spring set. This is gonna replace the factory bump stop to help upgrade the rear suspension on your 2021 and newer Ford F-150. This will work with both two wheel drive and four wheel drive models. Now these are going to help keep your vehicle level when you're towing or hauling a heavy load. It's gonna help absorb your bumps and shocks, minimize your sway and help to improve your control and comfort overall.

Now, when you're talking about suspension enhancement most people are familiar with airbags. Obviously these are not going to be airbags. These are a durable microcellular urethane construction. So one advantage of that is that it's gonna be maintenance free. So unlike your airbags where you have to adjust the air pressure make sure you've got the minimum amount of pressure at all times, and then add pressure if you've got a heavy load takeout air if you've got a lighter load, these are going to be a progressive load system.

So they've got that progressive load control. So the springs will compress according to the weight of your cargo. For your lighter loads the springs are gonna compress easily at first for a nice soft engagement and a less bumpy ride. And then for your heavier loads the springs will compress by as much as 80% to help support that load. They get firmer and stiffer the more they're compressed and so it's gonna help support those heavier loads.

So these will provide a 3000 pound weight capacity at 50% compression. Now when you hear that it's tempting to think that means it's going to help increase your vehicle's weight carrying weight by 3000 pounds, but that's not the case. Even airbags and any other suspension enhancement system is not going to increase your vehicle's weight carrying capacity. So think of it less like a second set of hands that's helping you lift more weight. Think of it more like a back brace.

So it's there to help support your suspension and help it to take some of that strain off of it, help it last longer, and that sort of thing. So these are gonna do a really good job for you. They've got a two piece design, so it is going to allow for unlimited suspension travel and movement for a smoother ride even when it's unloaded or when you're on rough terrain. And the springs will work independently from each other. So it's gonna help compensate for your off-center loads and reduce your body roll during your sharp turn. So if you've got a really heavy toolbox or something on one side and that spring is going to compress to handle that weight and the other spring is going to allow you to still absorb shock based on the amount of weight that's on that other side. These are gonna be a very simple bolt-on installation because they are a custom fit for your F-150. The brackets here are going to easily bolt onto your vehicle. They do include instructions to walk you through that whole process. Very easy to get installed. Unlike your airbags where you have to run a bunch of tubing. These are not going to require any tubing. So they are gonna be very easy to get installed. And you've got all the hardware that you're gonna need included here. These are made here in the USA so you can trust they are gonna be good quality. That microcellular urethane is very durable. It works in temperatures from negative 25 degrees Fahrenheit up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit, and it resists damage caused by oils, road salts, and UV rays. So it will hold up really well for you. It does have minimal lateral expansion so the springs will compress vertically instead of out to the sides. So they aren't easily damaged when operating in tight spaces. So they are gonna be very durable, hold up well for you for a long time to come. And they do come with a limited lifetime warranty. So if you we're to have any issues with them you're more than welcome to reach out to us here at etrailer.com. But overall, these are gonna do a really good job for you. You're not gonna have to worry about adjusting that air pressure like you would with airbags and it's gonna help make the ride a lot smoother for you. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.

Front and rear Sumo Springs installed. Have not had a chance to hit the highway as yet. Locally a very good ride. Thanks to Joanne K. for all of her help.

I installed these front Sumos on my 2023 Ford F53 chassis Class A Tiffin for several reasons. The factory bump stops had fallen out so something needed to be installed. I decided to invest in the Sumos to provide suspension support and get all the benefits of Sumos. I installed them, test drove the coach and am pleased with the results. They help cushion the front end and provide anti roll assistance. They work well with the Konis to soften the natural harshness of leaf springs. I’m very pleased with this addition.

by:

I put a small leveling kit in my 2500hd Silverado. I noticed afterwards towing my excavator or dump trailer I was getting some rear sag when I had my trailers loaded heavy. I considered doing air bags for the rear. Instead I installed the sumo springs. I installed them in about an hour. Very happy with them. No noticeable difference in ride quality while empty. And they keep my truck level when I’m hauling my trailers. 5 stars!

by:

I put front sumos on my 35’ class A MH in 23. (22k F53 chassis). I noticed reduced front sway and better tracking. Especially improved when semis pass. I then put rear sumos on along with a 1-3/4 sway bar on the rear this year,24. Improved handling and ride all around. Nothing more to do. All for under $ 3,500.

by:

Installation hardware did no work for my F53 chassis

by:

Installed front first and then took a trip on a curvy mountain road. I found they made a significant change in the ride and the sway. Very good update to a 2019 Ford F53 25000 chasis.

by:

I haven't had the springs under load, yet. I'm sure they'll perform as expected. I was not able to adjust the driver's side springs so that they align correctly. (see pic). The bottom spring does go into the top spring, but it's off enough that over time it will be an issue. Passenger side is spot-on! I have a 2024 F350 Tremor

The product did a good job in reducing body roll in the 2025 Winnebago View 24t. The instructions were less than helpful - they need to be rewritten for better clarity, orientation, and specificity for the Mercedes 2023 Sprinter 3500 XD AWD. I had considered Timberens, but I think these will do a better job in the long run.

I replaced both the front and rear helper springs. The tolerances on the front were really tight - doable but really tight. Don't have any suggestions for getting the springs bolted on other than to be patient, it's a tight fit and smaller hands would have helped, but no such luck - it just took patience. No big surprises, basically remove and replace - just be cautious on raising and lowering the front end. Wheel blocks and frame supports are mandatory for safety.

As far as the rear helper springs, the designers planned for the potential rerouting of lines on the left side of the coach quite nicely. Takes some time, DON'T lock tite anything until installation is complete, run around the block a couple of times, and readjusted for fit. The factory frame bumpers can be removed very easily with a pair of channel locks, rather than messing around with screwdrivers and prybars. Takes all of two seconds and the bumpers were removed without damaging the bracket.

Communications with eTrailer were great, probably overthought the project a bit but the representatives were great in keeping my thoughts corralled. The installation took longer than I expected but it was great fun, so who really minds additional time to do the job right.

We have a 2009 build F53 chassis on our 2010 Windsport 32A. I ordered these Sumo springs for the front axle. Hated how bad our coach dashboard would shake and rattle when going over bridge transitions, potholes, and concrete roadway section breaks. Took about an hour and were easy to install alone. Couldn't believe how much these helped the front axle. Worked so well I recently bought a set for the rear axle also. Those are a bit harder to install due to having to drill holes in frame rails to mount the upper bracket and glad I had friend to assist me. Would have only taken a little longer without the help but still easy to do by basic mechanic skills. With having both now we can certainly tell the difference and wished I had bought them sooner.

by:

The front Sumo Springs made a major difference in the stability of my Winnebago motorhome. It handles the bumps much better without major jarring of the passengers and dampens the side to side motion in turns and under crosswinds.

by:

I have a 28-foot-long class A motorhome on a Ford F53 Chassis. The handling of the vehicle at any speed above 50 mph is terrible. The vehicle wanders all over; very difficult to keep the vehicle between the lane marker lines. The SumoSprings, installed front and rear, did not solve this problem. Money would have been better spent elsewhere!

by:

they were a great investment for our motorhome. Swaying now is very little and it has to be very windy for me to notice. I will never own another motorhome without sumo springs. I have a forest river fr3 30ds 2021. Easy to install yourself.

by:

These springs made a big difference in the handling of my Newmar Baystar 31' motorhome. Much improved ride compared to the factory suspension.

by:

Sumo springs along with a steering stabizer, new shocks, and oversized sway bars seriously tightens the ride on older model RV with an f53 ford chasis. Long hauls become a lot less strenuous. I also put a memory foam and high density foam seat cushion on the driver's seat. We can travel all over with a lot less fatigue from fighting the wheel and pucker factor from blowing around the road. I took about 3 hours to unstall all 4 sumo springs.

by:

My THOR motor coach has the Ford F-53 chassis. I rides like a truck. That should not be surprising as "it is a truck." I purchased and installed these Sumo Springs and even though it will never be "air bag" suspension, the Sumo Spring made a wonderful difference in improving the ride. I would recommend this add on to everyone and as I meet similar motor coaches on the road, I show them the Sumo Springs and I do recommend them.

by:

Just Installed my Sumo Rear Springs. They went in real easy on my Dodge Ram 3500. The thing that took the most time on the install was jacking up the frame 3-4" to make enough space between the axle base and top of frame to slip in the entire lower and top sections of the Sumo Springs. Once I did that, I narrowed that space by letting the frame down a little but not all the way. Just enough to catch the receiving spring and leaving a half inch gap between the two sections. This allowed me to easily rachet the bottom u-clap without a problem and keep good alighment. I know I'm going to love this product once I hitch up. No more 2' drop in the rear end once hooking up to my 15k 5th wheel. These springs are stout but no so stout I'll beat the hell out of my body when hunting the rutted roads of the great North West. Thank you Jessie for your expertise and steering me toward the perfect application to meet my pulling and off-road needs.

by:

Preston did a great job helping me spec in the correct springs for my 2016 Thor Hurricane 27K on a F53 chassis. Placed order with him over phone and received springs two day's later. I just installed them and took Motor home on a test drive around town on bumpy streets and what a difference it made. Drives more like a truck now and less like a boat. I also installed a steering stabilizer spring and did the cheap handling fix to the sway bars. Well worth the time and effort. I did notice that the etralier installation video shows the bottom brackets of the spring installed with the "U" down which is opposite the mfg's printed instructions. I did mine according to the printed instructions cause it seemed to make more sense. Probably no big deal either way.
Thanks etrailer. I'll be contacting you guys when ready to do the back end of my motor home.

by:

The Sumo mount had to be slightly modified on the drivers side (removed a 1/2" by 1/2" chunk of the plate) with a grinder to get it to fit on my 2022 f350 4x4. I contacted the manufacturer prior to making the modification. They did not have an issue. The Sumo reduced truck squat (approx 3/4") allowing the truck to ride level with a trailer (8k hitch mount and 17k gooseneck). When you hit a pothole, the impact felt in the truck was jarring and caused the truck to become unstable. The Sumo eliminated this problem. I chose the blue over the yellow after watching a video on etrailer about ride comfort. I added front Sumos after I installed the rear Sumos. The rear provided the a more noticeable improvement. I chose Sumos over air bags because they eliminated air leak maintenance and air pressure adjustments depending on the load.

by:

The work great! Was going to go with the Air-Ride air bags in the front but folks had noted that the bags are strained when the leveling pulls the front wheels up to the point of coming off the ground. Glad we went with these. The person I put this on for is Handicap (or Handicapable as she says!) and these do not require air or making sure the pressure(s) are correct and holding.
It was a pain in the butttt get the original jounce bumper off the drivers side, but we muscled through it!! Thanks, Amy, for your help in ordering!! v

These helper springs made an amazing difference in the stability and ride comfort in our coach. Improved cornering and bounce control were immediately apparent. Plus, crosswind driving is much improved. The split design makes leveling easy as I typically raise the front of the coach rather than the rear. Installation is a lot of work, but can be done yourself with the right equipment. Very pleased.

by:

Love these. Were easy to install and work great. No complaints. Maintains ride height even with 10,000lbs on the trailer. “F-250 with gooseneck” for reference.

by:

Definitely helped keep my RV more stable on the uneven secondary roads and the push from big rigs as they pass by

by:

I installed the Sumo Springs prior to a 7500 mile trip on my 22GMC 2500. We was pulling our 34 foot Travel trailer and I believe the springs made all the difference in ride stability as well as control while pulling.

by:

Ordered the sumo springs on a Thursday and received them on a Thursday used the on line video they have had had them installed in no time this isn’t the only product I have gotten from them and will continue to use them great service

by:

They help the driving of our motorhome immensely.

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancement for a 2023 Ford F-150
The least invasive suspension enhancement option for your 2023 Ford F-150 is going to be the SumoSprings Rebel Custom Helper Springs item # SS53UV. These have a 3,000 lbs load leveling capacity. They're made of a two piece system that only engages when you have weight on the rear end of your truck. For your 95% daily driving time you won't notice them. If you're just lifting the front of the truck to get the rake out these will work perfectly. Any more than an 1" in the back and you're...

  • Will The SumoSprings Solo or Rebel Fit a 2021 Ford F-150 With Leveling Kit?
You will be able to use either the SumoSprings Solo # SS88UV or Rebel # SS53UV on your 2021 Ford F-150 4x4 since you only have a leveling kit installed. The leveling kit only raises the front suspension and leaves the rear at stock ride height. Personally I feel the Solo # SS88UV is the better option unless you are going to be using it on a truck constantly carrying loads. If you are using your truck with say a slide in camper the Rebel # SS53UV would be the better option.
