Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Wiring - Trailer Connectors - 18004 Review

Today, we're going to review part number 18004. This is the Draw Tite 4-Pole Trailer End Connector. This is 12 inches long. It also comes with the 4 wire caps to attach it to the wires on your trailer. Basically, the standard 4-way wires would be the white for the ground, the brown for the tail lights, the yellow for the left turn and brake, and the green for the right turn and brake, so when you go to attach this to your trailer, you do want to test the wires using a tester to make sure you connect the wires function to function, because sometimes the colors will not always match up. A good thing to do is to use a tester that we sell separately on our website that you can use to test the wires and then hook these wires using the included wire caps. That should do it for the review on part number 18004, the Draw-Tite4-Pole Trailer End Connector. .

Landlord dog chewed up the wire harness and this new has being doing the trick ever since! (Over a year now)

by:

The wiring harness worked great. I used it to connect a back up camera..Instead of fooling around with getting to the back up wires on the tail lights, I just clipped the harness to the wires on the back up camera(one live, one ground) and plugged that into my 4 pole trailer plug in the back of my pickup. when I turn on my headlights. it turns on the camera. It took all of 3 minutes to do that vs God no how long trying to disassemble and reassemble the tail lights to find a backup wire.

by:

Pretty straight forward. I used it to switch my European trailer's connection to be able to connect to my Wrangler's 4-pin trailer hookup.
No issues. works great.

Comments
The parts are still on my European trailer and working well! The trailer is a German brand and started its life there in Germany being pulled by my American-spec Jeep Wrangler. The trailer’s wiring and the Jeep’s connections needed to be massaged in order to work. The parts I ordered from etrailer and the writeups for the project on your site made it all possible. Now the trailer is titled and registered in Virginia and enjoying its life on this side of the Pacific!

received the item in 4 business days, just in time to fix my trailer for commercial lawn service.

Never used wire caps before, they are great. My 4 pole trailer harness actually has 5 wires, to my surprise, and I was able to fit both brown (running lights) in the cap and it works fine. I did wrap it all up with electrical tape to be safe.

by:

Great product easy to install don't care for the clips used my own connectors. E Trailer again exceeds all expectations. Thank You

by:

The video on installing the trailer hitch was very helpful to me. I was fooled by the Trailer End Connector. I assumed it was the wire connector that I needed to attach to my car, and there was no wiring instruction. So I struck out there. Fortunately I had someone who knew what they were doing help me to wire the proper connector to my car. Your service overall was fast and I did appreciate all the help we received from you. Perfect product. Great installation instructions. Now I need European adaptor to fit European trailer lights.

by:

high quality, exactly as described. etrailer.com is a very useful and knowledgeable website.

by:

I ordered the Hidden Hitch with a 4 prong flat blade plug-in, the cover and mount for the plug-in, which I installed on an '09 Hummer. The product seems to be well made, it installed easily and to my surprise it was delivered in two days. Thanks

by:

Great value! Exactly like the original harness plug that came with the trailer 12 yrs. ago. Even comes with 4 wire taps to make a secure waterproof connection.

by:

It did the job, I soldered all of my connections followed by shrink tubing.

by:

The quick connectors made replacing the old bad trailer connection quick and easy.

by:

Needs butt connectors, not splitters.

by:

Installed easily. I used my own butt splice connectors instead of the ones supplied with the plug.

by:

Exactly what I expected and worked grea t.

I was a little worried about ordering this product because the cost seemed cheap!
After receiving it in the mail I installed it right away and I have to say I am very impressed with the quality of the product.
The entire process from ordering to fast shipping was a great experience. Pricing and shipping was great and I would definitely recommend this store to anyone.

by:

Fast shipping. Good packaging. Easy to install. Well made. All in all a great buy!

by:

It really was easy to install. And it continues to work well after one year of use.

by:

It took a little longer to get than expected, but it arrived in good condition. I have not plugged in the lights to check it out yet. Customer service was great...

by:

The product was excellent and worked to perfection.

by:

Great product. Hasn’t let me down yet!

by:

Seems to be ok but the wire length is much shorter than expected. Will still work fine, just be ware.

by:

As described Appears to be good quality. Have not yet used.

  • Wiring a 4 Pole Flat Trailer Connector Part 18004 to Trailer With Split Running Light Circuit
Typically, a 4-way trailer connector is wired as follows: Green wire for right side directional signal and brake light, yellow wire for left directional and brake, brown for running/marker light, and white for ground. Your trailer has two wires for the marker lights, one to run down the drivers side, one for the passenger. You can use a regular 4-way connector such as our part # 18004, and connect the two wires you have for the running light circuit to the brown wire on the connector.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Wiring Where There is an Intermittent Connection On Dash
You have a dirty pin on the 7-way of your truck or your trailer that is causing an intermittent connection. I'd recommend taking some sandpaper to all the pins of the trailer wiring and the problem will go away. I also attached a link to a page on troubleshooting trailer wiring installs as well.

  • Troubleshooting Ground Circuit of Trailer Wiring Not Active on Trailer Wiring
Sounds like a weak ground for the running light circuit that's not working currently. Since the trailer frame is aluminum make sure the ground wires of the circuits are running back to the ground circuit of the trailer connector. Typically trailer wiring grounds through the frame but on an aluminum trailer this does not work.

  • Troubleshooting Non-Functional Left Trailer Turn Signal in 7-Way Trailer Connector on 2008 Ford F150
You most likely have a blown fuse. The fuse for the trailer left turn/left brake lamp circuit is in the passenger cab fuse panel in location 42. Replace the fuse, but before plugging the trailer in, you'll want to closely examine the left turn circuit on the trailer to locate the short and repair it, otherwise you'll continue blowing fuses.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Wiring that Blinks When Connected
Is it like an intermittent blink that changes speed or does it blink with a consistent rhythm? My guess is that there's an intermittent connection of the ground circuit of the trailer wiring which is causing the lights to not work consistently. I'd first clean all of the pins of the trailer wiring as most likely you just have some corrosion that is causing an intermittent connection that comes and goes. I also attached a help article on trailer wiring troubleshooting for you to check out...

  • Can Trailer Lights Mount to Wood and Still Ground Properly
As long as you use trailer lights that have ground wires instead of grounding through the hardware what you are wanting to do is possible. You'd just run the wire of the 4-way like what comes with the part # 18004 to the ground of each assembly.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Wiring that Stops Working Right with Headlights
Your main problem is an insufficient ground for the trailer wiring. Try improving the connection of the main ground wire of the trailer wiring harness. Make sure it is attached to a clean metal surface. Or you can run all of the trailer wires back to the main ground. This is actually the ideal solution. But you can also check the current grounds for the lights to make sure they are making a solid connection to a clean metal surface. What you described is the classic insufficient ground...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Wiring Left Turn Signal Not Working
With weird, illogical problems like this on trailer wiring the fix is almost always improving the grounding of the trailer wiring. So make sure the ground strap that runs from the connector to the trailer frame is connected to a clean metal surface and also make sure the light assembly grounds are connected to a clean metal surface as well. I also attached a link to an article that covers trailer wiring troubleshooting for you to check out as well.

  • Troubleshooting All Trailer Lights Flashing When Vehicle Turn Signal Is Turned On
I am sorry to hear about the issues you are having with the lights on your boat trailer! Based on the issue you described it does indeed sound like there is a ground issue. You mentioned your trailer is a boat trailer, would it happen to be made out of aluminum? Typically aluminum is harder to get a good ground on and to combat that you will need to run a jumper from each light ground to the main ground on the tongue of the trailer. If adding the ground jumpers does not fix the issues...

  • What To Do When Trailer Brakes Stop Working After Replacing a 7 Way Plug
If your brake controller is not lighting up, this is most likely the cause for your trailer brakes not working. Typically this will mean that there is either no power going to the controller or the controller has gone bad and will need to be replaced. With that being said, I highly suggest checking all your ground connections, both on the trailer and vehicle, as even one that has gone bad can cause any number of issues. If all the grounds look good, you will need to test the black power...

  • Troubleshooting Troubleshooting Trailer Lighting Now Working
Try putting the tester on the vehicle side connector again and seeing if any of the circuits light up when the door opens. That is really odd you are seeing that so I wonder if you still have some issues on the vehicle side that need to be worked out.

  • Troubleshooting Draw-Tite 18004 on 2014 Dodge Dart Where All Lights Go Out When Brakes Applied
This is likely just a simple grounding issue because when trailer lighting does not have a sufficient ground many different scenarios can show up- the most common is when the most amperage is applied, like tail lights on and brake pedal pressed, the lights go out. I recommend that you start by checking the ground on both the vehicle's wiring harness and the trailer's. Make sure that they are firmly connected to a paint, debris and rust free surface on the vehicle and the trailer's frame....

  • Which Fuse For Trailer Running Lights On 2010 Ford F-150
Since the running lights on your boat trailer are not working when plugged in to your 2010 Ford F-150, but you know the issue is on the truck then I recommend checking Fuse 31 in the engine bay fuse box. This is a 20 amp fuse so if it is missing or blown you will need to replace it with another 20 amp fuse.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Wiring Where Running Lights and Turn Signal Stopped Working
It's very possible it's a blown trailer wiring fuse or relay like you mentioned but typically this problem is just corrosion on the trailer wiring pins that needs to be cleaned off and once that's done the connection is allowed to pass through and the problem goes away.

  • Troubleshooting No Trailer Lights Working But 7-way Connector On Truck Working Correctly
Since the you verified that the 7-way connector on your 2005 GMC Sierra is working properly that narrows the issue down to somewhere on the trailer. Now since none of the lights are working it is more than likely the trailer connector. Check for any corrosion and or debris in the trailer side connector that would cause a connection issue. When you say you wiggled some things, would that happen to be the junction box where the 7-way connector gets connected to the trailer wiring? If...

  • Trailer Taillights Have Power at Light Connector And Light Bulb Will Not Light
If you are getting power to the light but nothing with the bulb it sounds like it has to be a ground issue. I thought it might have been a issue with the bulb connector but since you changed out the entire assembly it seems hard to believe that it would be the issue with both assemblies. I recommend checking the ground connection for the light for any built up corrosion. I have linked an article below that covers troubleshooting trailer lighting issues.

  • Determining If A 30 Amp Case Fuse Is Blown
On a square-shaped sealed fuse (case fuse) you typically do not have leads or contact points to test the fuse, as you mentioned. In this case, you usually can see through the top clear section to verify if the fuse is blown (separation of the internal circuit). If you cannot tell using this method, then you use a voltmeter on the lowest resistance (Ohm) setting and connect the two voltmeter leads together and record this reading. Then connect the two voltmeter leads to the contact points...

  • Troubleshooting 5th Wheel 7-Way Adapter Not Functioning Completely
I'd first check the pins of the adapter for corrosion and clean as necessary with sandpaper as that's normally what causes issues with circuits not being active. Next thing to look for is bent pins or broken wire on the adapter but I'd be shocked if the issue wasn't corrosion.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Brake and Turn Signal Lamps
What you describe still sounds like it might be a ground problem. I'd make sure the adapter you used on the vehicle is securely grounded to the vehicle with good attachment to clean metal. Check the main ground on the trailer tongue, which is where the main ground from the trailer connector should attach, make sure this connection is also secure and not corroded. I like to install a star washer on my ground connections between the ring terminal and the trailer frame to get a good bite...

  • Only Right Turn Signal Working on 2018 Keyston Bullet Ultra Lite Travel Trailer
This sounds like an issue with the trailer wiring. The first thing to check is the grounding on the trailer. Make sure the ground wire has a clean connection to the trailer's frame. Any corrosion or buildup on the connection point can dampen the power going to the trailer's lights. Also, check each of the trailer light grounds by opening them. They need to have a clean connection to the trailer's frame as well. If you find any corrosion, paint, or rust at any of these points, then clean...

The stop and turn signal lights on your 2007 Toyota Tundra are run on separate wires. If you are not getting any power on the left stop/turn pin inside the trailer connector when the brake is applied there are really only two things that could cause this which is either a wire short or blown fuse. I know you said you checked the fuses but make sure you pull each out for the trailer wiring and thoroughly inspect the filament. If this does not yield a result then you will need to start tracing...

  • No Trailer Lights On Ford F-150 Until Brake Pedal Is Applied
If none of the trailer lights are working then that means you have a ground issue, severed trailer wiring harness, or there is an issue with the vehicle's computer. The first step would be to test the trailer connector on the truck to see if you are getting power here. If no power is here then check the ground for the trailer connector and or trace some of the wires back while checking for breaks. If there is power on the trailer connector then do the same for the trailer side as well,...
