Recommended Axle Flip Kit and Replacement Springs for a Triple Axle Trailer

Updated 11/12/2025 | Published 11/09/2025

Question:

I am in need to replace all of my suspension under my Hurricane Cargo 40 tri axle enclosed trailer. This is a snowmobile race trailer that gets pulled in the salt. It sits very low to the ground, more ideal for a car, inconvenient for where I put it sometimes. I have done some research, but want to make sure that I get everything that I need. The Dexter trailer over-under conversion kit k71-385-00x3, the triple axle hanger kit aptt5, I also want to replace all of the springs. I took some rough dimensions. I do have 3 axles. I currently have a 4-leaf spring set, 1 3/4 wide. The shackles are in between 3 and 4 inches coming down from the frame, I didnt measure to the center of the hole. All springs appear to be the same length, around the 25 1/4 area. I will say that when looking at the fender well, the center springs could be longer to have the front and rear tires match the arch of the fenders. I just bought the trailer, so I am unsure if anything has been replaced. So I am not 100 percent sure if I should get all 6 springs the same, or if I should get 4 springs and 2 springs? Let me know what options will work best for me, Thanks

Hey Daniel you have done your research well. Congrats on the new trailer!

The Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit item # K71-385-00 works with 3" diameter axles and you will need three of them as they are sold individually.

The Triple-Axle Trailer Hanger Kit for Double-Eye Springs item # APTT5 will get you new hangers and replace your current equalizers and suspension hardware.

When you're replacing leaf springs you definitely want to swap them all out at the same time. I do need a bit more information about your leaf springs though. What capacity are your axles and how many leafs do your current springs have?

We have plenty of options that are 25-1/4" long like the 5-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 6,000-lb Trailer Axles item # e34SR, however I don't want to stiffen your suspension up by giving you too big of a spring.

I do need you to take another measurement though. Leaf springs stretch out over years of use so unless you lifted your trailer up and got the weight off the springs that 25-1/4" probably isn't what you need.

You will want to take a measurement from the center of the spring eye to the center pin on the leaf spring along the curve( measurement B in that attached image). This measurement will be the same no matter how worn the spring has become, it is the best way to measure for a replacement.

You can add this information and any other questions you have where it says Reply to Jerred H and I'll be happy to answer them.

Go ahead and send me some pics if you'd like me to take a look at the alignment of your suspension in relation to the fenders. Make sure you take a pic or two of how the equalizer is sitting. You can send them directly the address you receive this response from.

The leaf springs are a 4-leaf set. The axles are 5,200 lb. The GVWR is 15,600lbs. The (B) measurement is around 13-13 1/8".

@DanielG Thanks for that measurement and the pictures! The 5-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 6,000-lb Trailer Axles - 25-1/4" Long item # e34SR are exactly what you need to replace your current springs. The suspension looks like it's got some age on it but setup wise it looks good and factory original. Unless you're having wear issues on the tires or rubbing on the fenders, I wouldn't mess with the size of the springs to match the geometry of the fenders. I do recommend looking at the diagram on the item # APTT5 product page and comparing the placement of your current hangers to the recommended mounting locations. 25-1/4" springs like item # e34SR would call for 29-1/2", 34", and 29-1/2" between the hangers on center.
