If you're replacing a busted or rusted-out spring on your trailer - or if you've decided to upgrade to dacromet to avoid rusted-out springs down the line - the first thing you'll need to do is measure your existing leaf springs. Take a look at the measurements above. If these dimensions - and the weight rating - match what you currently have, you should be good to go.

Remember, though, your leaf springs can flatten a bit over time. And if you're measuring your spring while your trailer is fully loaded, the overall length that you get might be a bit more than what you need a brand new, unloaded spring to measure.

Rustproof Your Trailer Suspension with Dacromet

Slipper Spring Dacromet

As you travel across highways and backroads, your trailer's leaf springs are going to corrode and flake over time. This is especially true if you have a boat trailer that's regularly submerged in water. Completely rusted-out springs on trailers are all too common, and these dacromet springs are a great solution to that problem.

Dacromet Versus Rusty Springs Comparison

Longer-lasting springs will save you money and are great for any trailer, but they are a must have for folks who live or play by the water. If you live on the coast, you're probably always rinsing the saltwater off of your trailer to try and keep rust at bay. If you're really worried, you might've even tried to repaint your springs or spray them down with rust inhibitors. But upgrading to these dacromet-coated leaf springs could cut down on or eliminate all of that maintenance, leaving you more time to spend out on the water.

Rust-resistant coatings are graded according to a salt spray rating. Basically, this rating shows the amount of time it takes for a material to show signs of corrosion when exposed to pure, continuous salt spray. We conducted our own salt spray test and found that this dacromet coating lasts up to 744 hours before it begins to deteriorate. Compare that to some other dacromet coatings out there that are rated at just 300 hours - or zinc coatings that don't last for even that long - and you can be sure these springs will last.

Slipper Spring Basics

Leaf springs, as you probably know, make up an important part of your trailer's suspension. Their main purpose is to absorb road shock as you travel, as well as allow your axle(s) to move independently of the rest of the trailer.

Slipper Spring Parts

To mount this leaf spring, you'll need hangers welded onto your trailer frame - which you probably already have in place - as well as shackle straps and a suspension bolt. It's a good idea to replace your existing straps and bolt while you're under there working on things because they tend to wear out quickly. One thing that could help keep them from wearing out too fast would be upgrading to galvanized or zinc-plated hardware. Doing so will boost the corrosion resistance and, therefore, the longevity of your trailer.

We also always recommend replacing both of your springs at the same time because it's not unusual for leaf springs to sag and elongate over time. If you replace just the one, there's a good chance that it won't match your existing spring on the opposite side of your trailer, and that can mess up your alignment.

Springs are good I guess. I bought the wrong size. They were to long. I usually only use trailer twice a year, once on way to riverat beginning of season and then back home at the end of season.

  • Recommended Replacement 26-1/4" Slipper Spring
Thanks for the picture! I have something close to your 26" slipper springs. It is possible to switch to a two eye leaf spring or even go down to a four leaf spring with a higher capacity. If you wanted to switch it up to a two eye leaf spring I would need to know the distance from the center of the two bolts. You can email me back that measurement if you decide to make the change. The 26-1/4" Long 4-Leaf Slipper Spring w/ Open Eye End item # e33SR with a protective coating is the closest...

  • Should a Nylon Bushing Be Used With the Open Eye End Of Slipper Spring # e33SR
A Nylon Bushing # TRBU11561 is not required to be used on the open end of the 4-Leaf Slipper Spring # e33SR. Since the bushing is not going to be fully encased it stands that under the weight of the trailer it will fail and break apart more easily. I recommend spraying some LubeMaster Dry Silicone Spray # RM-747 on the open end bolt and contact areas of the spring. This will provide lubrication to the parts without attracting dirt.

  • Do You Have The Replacement Open Eye Leaf Springs and Hardware For a 2001 Load Rite Boat Trailer
The only open eye 1-3/4" wide leaf springs we currently carry is the etrailer # e24SR & # e33SR. I have no way to verify the weight capacity for your current springs but as it is only a 2" square axle this spring is likely much heavier than you will need. We do have the U-Bolt Kit # CE23103 for your axle which includes 4 u-bolts, 2 plates and 8 washers and nuts. Then you will need 2 of the Hanger Bolts # TRFA73Z916DLNZ for the leaf springs.

For as trashed as those brake assemblies are I am impressed with how spotless that spindle is! Based on the bearing numbers you mentioned you have a #84 spindle and the hub part # AKHD-545-35-G-K is correct. Since this its galvanized it's a really great option as it will fight corrosion. The flexible brake line kits like the part # 18SI-BLKIT is what I would go with. They are just as durable as anything else and a lot easier to install. The brake assemblies # AKFBBRK-35R-D and # AKFBBRK-35L-D...

  • Does the Open End Of The Slipper Spring Require a Bushing?
The 4-Leaf Slipper Spring # e33SR does not require a bushing on the rear bolt that retains the open end of the slipper spring. You are correct in the way that you have installed this on your 1996 Escort trailer.

  • Leaf Spring Replacement for 3,600 lb Boat that is 26 inches Long
The best leaf spring for your application is the item # e27SR which matches the 26 inch length you need and has a 4,500 lb capacity. This would have just enough extra capacity that won't fail but also would still flex enough to cushion the ride quality.

  • Hanger Kit Recommendation for Slipper Leaf Spring # e33SR
Sounds like what you are in need of is a single axle hanger kit for the leaf spring part # e33SR that you mentioned. For that you'd only need the # APS3SE and you'd be set. This gives you the hangers for the front and rear for the spring as well as the correct nut and bolt to hold it all. For a u-bolt kit you'd then want the part # CE23103 for the axles.

  • How to Pick Out Replacement Slipper Springs for a Boat Trailer with 2 inch Square Axles
In order to pick out springs you need to remove the load on the trailer so that the leaf spring is not flattened out at all. You will want to measure from the center of the eye of the spring to the center of where the slipper spring contacts the hanger. If that distance is 26-1/4 inches and the capacity of the axle is 4,100 lbs the # e33SR would fit and work well. The bushing of this spring is 9/16 inch in diameter. You will want to use a 9/16 inch diameter bolt so you can either premeasure...

The 4-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 4,000-lb Trailer Axles - 26" Long # e48SR is a good replacement for your boat trailer as it meets all of the specs and is compatible with an axle that's just a little higher when it comes to weight rating. Please note that what you do to one side of the axle you need to do to the other so you'll need 2 of these leaf springs.

  • Replacement Leaf Spring Needed with One Open End on a Bayliner Trailer
It sounds like the 4-Leaf Slipper Spring w/ Open Eye End # e33SR could be what you are looking for. Over time leaf springs can stretch so this one being 1/4" shorter than your current leaf spring is most likely correct. This leaf spring is rated for a 4,300 lb axle and comes with 4 leafs. The amount of leafs isn't really important since you are simply looking for the weight capacity to be right at or slightly more than what your axle is rated for. The only real issue that I see is this...

  • Should Trailer Leaf Springs Have Shackles on Front and Back
Hey Richard, so yeah having shackles on the front and back of the leaf spring would be incorrect by normal standards and I think would potentially be dangerous as it would allow the axle to move forward and back independent of the trailer and would pretty easily cause sway. Since most likely the hangers are the same height and are at an odd spacing I would go ahead and replace the hangers and shackles with a kit like the part # APS4. I don't know your axle capacity though so to pick out...
