A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.
Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.
It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.
Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Hi there, I'm Michael with each etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a quick look at this marine trailer jack. This is going to allow you to raise and lower your boat or recreational trailer. This does have a max tongue weight of 1,500 pounds. So, that's going to work out to be about a 10,000 pound boat or a trailer that you're wanting to, tow. This will work to help lift up that front end there on the approximately a 10,000 pound trailer.
So, this is going to have this 4 bolt plate that will allow you to attach this to the, trailer frame. It will work with your square trailer tongue up to 3 inches by 5 inches. This does have the sidewind design. So, it is going to be very easy to raise and lower. It's got an ergonomic handle here, that's going to make it easy to rotate that around.
When we extend it up, we're going to have a travel of about 10 inches as our, 2 and a quarter inch, outer diameter tube here, slides along our 2 inch diameter inner tube. Our, bracket and that's attaching to our frame, is right about 5 inches tall by 6 and 3 quarters of an inch wide. So, I'll tell you that because we're going to measure from the center of our bracket to the bottom of our wheel. When we have it fully retracted at its lowest point, the center of the bracket and this orientation down to the bottom of the wheel, it's going to be right at 13 inches. When we have it fully extended again from the center of the bracket down to the bottom, it's going to be at 23 inches.
So that gives us that 10 inches of travel. Another thing to consider is going to be your clearance. So, when you have this mounted on your boat's frame from the center of the bracket, up to the top, it's going to be right about 12 and 3 quarters of an inch, so keep that in mind. If you're going to have a tailgate that could come down, potentially get damaged if it hits this too hard. Something to keep in mind when you're deciding where to mount it and that sort of thing.
But this bracket is also going to allow you to swivel this. So, you just pull out on this pin here, now it will allow you to, rotate that jack up. So, it's going to be, um horizontal along with your trailer frame as you're traveling. So, you're not going to have to worry about the ground clearance or that, vertical clearance, for your tailgate and that sort of thing. So, it's nice to keep it up out of the way there. And then when you need it again, pull out on that pin. It will swivel back into place, lock in on that hole there. So, it will stay in place where you need it to. This does also have this, heavy duty 8 inch diameter by 2 inch wide Castor Wheel, that's going to resist flat spots and cracking. It's going to do a good job of allowing you to maneuver your trailer. If you're moving your boat around the yard into storage, that sort of thing will allow you to have a lot of adjustability in controlling the direction of travel. This is a nice durable steel construction with a zinc plated finish to help resist corrosion. So, it will do a good job for you. It is made here in the USA, so you can trust, it's made to the high quality standards that we've come to know and trust for products that are made here in the U.S. This bracket will bolt right onto your frame. They include all the hardware that you're going to need, as well as instructions to help you get it installed. So, overall, a really nice option for those of you who are wanting to add a, swivel jack with a wheel, onto your approximately 10,000 pound trailer. That's going to complete our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

It appears to be very sturdy. Easy installation. Only time will tell how well it performs
Good communication great to work with
Plenty of beef for my 21 foot Key West. Much stronger than the small jack that came with my Magic Tilt trailer
Review from a similar Dutton-Lainson Swivel Marine Jack in Trailer Jack
This jack replaces a Dutton jack that must be at least 30 years old and exclusively in a salt water environment. The older jack was structurally perfect but for the handle which rusted and finally snapped. Unable to replace the handle, I ordered the replacement. I expect the new one will perform handle equally well. The eight inch wheel and caster is a plus, since the 14’ Maritime Skiff must be positioned by hand at times.

This fit properly and helps compensate for a narrow opening (top crank was important). Quick delivery also helped.
