Rugged, Matte Black Finish

The sturdy steel construction is protected with a matte black finish for added durability. This unique powder coating gives etrailer hitches a carbide-like appearance and a rugged look that sets them apart from traditional glossy hitches. In addition to being rust and corrosion resistant, the tough matte coating hides dirt, scuffs, and dings better than a glossy finish.

Video Transcript for etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Installation - 2014 Chevrolet Equinox

Speaker 1: Today in this 2014 Chevrolet Equinox we're going to be having a look at, and showing you how to install the etrailer.com Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver. Part number E98865. Here's what our hitch looks like installed. This hitch fits nicely in the cutout provided in the bumper. The rest of it is hidden nicely behind our rear fascia. On the side of your receiver, you'll find your industry standard 5/8" diameter hitch pin hole which you use a pin and clip to secure your hitch mounted accessories.

You can pick up one of those separately on our website. That's part number PC3.Welded on the bottom of our receiver, are our plate styled safety chain loops. What's nice about these, is that even if you have a very large diameter safety chain hook, such as this one, you'll still be able to easily clip on and clip off. On the end of our receiver, you'll find this collar that's welded on, not only to reinforce the receiver opening, but to give it a nice finished look. This hitch features a 350 lbs max tongue weight rating, which is the amount forcing down, and a 3,500 lbs max gross trailer weight rating, which is the amount it can pull.

It does support the use of weight distribution, and when you're using that on your trailer, you tongue weight rating increases to 400 lbs, and your max gross trailer weight rating increases to 4,000 lbs.You want to make sure that you consult with the owner's manual of your Equinox, and not exceed what the vehicle's rated for. Go by whichever number is less. Now one nice thing about this hitch, that is different than other hitches out there, it has a different type of finish on it. This is a matte black carbide finish, and this is much more durable than some of the other finishes on hitches I've seen. So what this means, by having this different finish, this hitch will be more rust resistant, and scratch resistant, for you.

So it'll look nicer for a much longer time. Now for a few measurements to better assist you in choosing any hitch mounted accessory you may need, such as a ball mount, bike rack, or a cargo carrier. You're looking at about 14-1/2" from the ground to the top of the 2" receiver opening. And about 5" from the center of the hitch pin hole to rear most part of the back bumper. Now that we've gone over some features, we'll show you how to get it installed. To begin our install, at the bottom section of the center of our rear fascia, we have this door. This will hide the hitch when it's installed.

We need to remove this first. So we can take a pair of needle nosed pliers, squeeze the tabs together at each corner as we pull it down. It will release. If we look straight up, behind where that door was, we'll find one of two things. We'll have round holes right here, on each side, or we'll have a weld nut. If we have a weld nut, we'll use a bolt and a conical tooth washer with the teeth facing up, and that'll secure our hitch in this location. Now since we don't have weld nuts, we'll take our fish wire, go through the hole, and then out the side of the bumper being that's closes to that hole. Once the wire is through our bumper beam, we'll take our spacer block, place it on the pull wire, and stick that inside the bumper beam. And then we'll thread on our carriage bolt to the pull wire. With that threaded on, we'll place that inside the bumper beam as well, and then we'll pull the bolt through the hole, remove our pull wire, and repeat the same process for the other side. Now on the side of our frame rail, right next to our bumper beam, we'll have two weld nuts. And it's the exact same on the other side of the vehicle. We'll take some spray lubricant, go inside the weld nut, and we'll take a wire brush that we have available on our website, part number 814092, and go in and out of the hole a few times, to help remove any loose dirt, debris, or possible rust that's inside. This will make it so when bolts go in a lot easier. We'll do that for every weld nut that we have. Now, with an extra set of hands, we'll raise our hitch in a position, we'll go over our carriage bolts in the middle, and we'll secure it in place with our flange nuts. Now we'll take our side bolts, with a conical tooth washer, the teeth will face away from the bolt head and towards the hitch. We'll position the hitch over the weld nuts in the frame, and secure it with our bolts. Keep in mind, everything that we do on one side, we'll repeat on the other side. Now we can start the process of tightening all of our hardware down. Now we'll torque all of our hardware, to the amount specified in the instructions. And that completes are look at, and showing you how to install the etrailer.com Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver, part number E98865, on this 2014 Chevrolet Equinox.

Product is as advertised.. Fit well. Finish great.. For my 15 V6 Equinox... Though only 37k on my SUV... The hitch should include a tap to clean out the holes or just state a tap will be needed... Also the access panel can be cutout to fit close around the hitch with not much effort at all for a cleaner finished look... and the wiring kit was easy as advertised also.. Though I choose to run my power line from the front to back .. since I do not have a Lift... 572592

Ordered hitch on Sept 27th. It arrived 4 days later on October 1st (with free shipping)! Loved the ability to track the shipment! Thank you for providing a link that allowed me to track the shipment!Hitch did bust through the shipping box but other than being scuffed up, it was not damaged. All the parts were there including the fishwire (two additional bolts were included (M12) apparently just to make sure but the instructions ought to say that these were extra because it kinda makes you think you forgot about something during the install). The installation videos on your website are the best! It made me realize that I could do this install. They were absolutely invaluable in explaining how to use the fishwire! Without the video I would not have known how to fish the carriage bolts and square hole "nut" into the bumper holes. The fishwire worked exactly as in your videos and was a snap to use! Thank you!Getting the hitch into the final position was a little tight and I had to exert a little force with a jack but other than that it fit like a glove.I give your hitch a rating of 9.5 out of 10. Thank You!Please let me know that you have received my comments.Dave 531807

This was by far the easiest hitch installation I have done. Thanks for a wonderful design and Chevy for having a frame that was setup for the hitch addition. 533644

The hitch was delivered very quickly and installation was a breeze. The only criticism I can give is that the packaging could be better. The box had no internal protection for the hitch. When I received the hitch, one end of the hitch had punctured thru the box, although nothing was damaged, some simple packaging material could have avoided this and any possible damage. 533732

Holes did not line up with those in vehicle ('14 Equinox) had to return for another hitch. Holes didn't line up on the 2nd one either. Hammer needed to be used to line up holes on drivers side. Definitely would not recommend. 619180

Comments
When a trailer hitch is constructed, softer steel is used in the side plates as opposed to the harder steel used in the crossbar and receiver tube. This allows the hitch to flex along with the vehicle to a certain degree. This flexibility can also allow the hitch to get slightly bent out of position during shipping and handling. The good news is that its very easy to fix this if you know a few tricks as shown in the linked article.

The product looked very good to me but the installation was a pain in the neck first of all the threads on the connector rails on the vehicle were terrible you need more than a wire brush and you need a power tool for the bolts also you need to put the vehicle on a lift to do it properly it took me four hours for installation but it looks great now I know why people charge $400 to install the trailer hitch probably l won't do it again next the challenge will be the wire harness will see how that comes out till next time this is the big dog take care. 550106

Comments
Any vehicle that operates for more than a year or two in northern climates will see road debris and corrosion in the hitch attachment nuts that are welded into the frame members. If the corrosion/dirt isnt severe, a wire brush and some spray lubricant will do a pretty good job of getting the threads cleaned enough so that the bolts can be easily installed. In cases where the corrosion is more severe, youll need to use a M12 x 1.75 thread tap. Use caution if an impact wrench is used to fasten the bolts. Use of an impact wrench can actually break loose the weld nuts, making installation more difficult.

I received my hitch on Thursday as projected. Friday, I started to install it. I was amazed at how easy it was. I decided to try to install it alone with the vehicle sitting on the ground. If I needed help my son would be available later in the day but I found that is was not necessary. I had already cleaned out the threads on the weldnuts before the hitch arrived so the installation went smooth. My biggest concern was the installation of the two bolts through the horizontal tube using the fishwire provided. It was amazing. I ran the fishwire through the tube, passed it through the squared hole spacer and threaded it on to the bolt. I pulled the fishwire and next thing I knew the end of the bolt dropped through the hole right into place. I repeated the procedure with the other side with the same results. Great design. I then used my floor jack to lift the hitch high enough to pass the bolts through the hitch and start the two nuts onto the ends of the bolts. I was concerned that I might push the bolts back up into the tube as I lifted the hitch. To prevent this, I reattached the fishwire onto one of the bolts and passed it through the hole in the hitch so that as I raised the hitch I could assure that the bolt was aligned to the hole. Since I only had one fishwire I made a second one for the other bolt using some 22ga copper wire that I had around. It worked great although it would be a good idea to include a second fishwire as part of the installation parts.. Once the nuts were threaded loosely onto the ends of the bolts , I continued to raise the hitch into place as started the four bolts into the side weldnuts. Since I had already cleaned out the threads the bolts went in easily. Once all four bolts were started, I tightened them down with a ratchet and socket. I then removed the floor jack and proceeded to tighten the two nuts. Finally, I went back and torqued all six fasteners. Done - total time 20 minutes. Great design. I could not be happier. 532671

  • Troubleshooting Fitting M12-1.75X40mm Hex Bolts for etrailer.com Hitch on a 2009 Chevy Equinox
The M12-1.75 x 40mm hex bolts that come with the etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver # E98865 should fit the weldnuts on your 2009 Chevrolet Equinox as they have been tested and confirmed to work with your specific vehicle. A lot of times weldnuts get debris in them which makes starting the bolts pretty difficult. If you haven't already tried spraying penetrating oil like WD-40 and letting it soak for 5 minutes then cleaning it with a brush like part # 814092, do that and see if it...

This is how much the trailer can weigh by itself and still be safe. I've confirmed this information with the owner's manual. For any hitch we do have replacement hardware, the Replacement Hardware Kit for Trailer Hitches # RHK. All you need to do is go to this product page, enter the model number of your hitch in the box that says "Hitch Item Number" and then select the correct manufacturer from the drop-down box. Simply...

  • Hitch and Wiring Recommendations for 2017 Chevy Equinox
The tow package parts, or towing equipment from a 2000 GMC Sierra will not fit a 2017 Chevrolet Equinox. The trailer hitch and wiring are designed differently for each application, however there is a solution to tow with your Equinox. I recommend the etrailer Trailer Hitch # e98865. I like the finish on this hitch more than other because it's a flat black so it blends in on the bottom really well and hides dirt and scratches easily. It's a custom fit hitch, so there's not drilling or cutting...

  • Best Trailer Hitch for a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox AWD
The best trailer hitch for your 2005 Chevrolet Equinox AWD with the V6 engine is the etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver part # E98865. The reason for this is because the ends of the crosstube are closed off which is greatly going to reduce the chance for rust when compared to the open ends on the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 76028. The trailer hitch on a vehicle is generally subjected to much harsher conditions due to its location which is why I feel this is important....

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Trailer Wiring for 2017 GMC Terrain
We have both Class III hitches with the 2 inch receiver tube or the Class II with the 1-1/4 inch receiver tube available for the 2017 Terrain. I'll typically recommend folks go with the 2 inch, as there are more hitch mounted accessories available and there isn't much of a price difference between the two. I'd recommend going with the etrailer brand # e98865 Class III hitch because it's very competitively priced and is just as high quality as the offerings from Curt and Draw-Tite. For the...

  • Will Tekonsha Universal Wiring Harness Fit a 2006 Saturn Vue
The Upgraded Circuit Protected Tail Light Converter Hardwire Kit # 119178KIT is technically a universal kit so it will indeed fit your 2006 Saturn Vue. With that being said, the T-One # 118418 is actually a plug and play style that tees in behind your tail lights and would be much easier to install so I recommend going with this instead. I have attached an installation video of this kit as well for you to compare to the universal kit. If you don't already have a trailer hitch then...

  • Are Hitch Bike Racks Compatible with the 2016 GMC Terrain
Yes hitch bike racks can be used on the 2016 GMC Terrain with no issues! For a good quality hanging rack the Thule Hitching Post Pro - Folding Tilting 4 Bike Rack w Anti-Sway -part # TH934XTR is a great rack. It is not for use with carbon framed bikes however. For a platform style and one compatible with carbon frames the Kuat Transfer 2 Bike Platform Rack - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches part # TS02G is a really good one. I can provide a more specific recommendation if you will fill me...
