Expert Reply:
As your 2016 Chevy Equinox can have a maximum of 350 pounds of tongue weight capacity, depending on how it came equipped, carrying a 280 dirt bike may be very doable. You will need to check your owner's manual for this capacity though, as again, it does depend on a few things.
You will also want to check the weight of the carrier. As an example, the Ultra-Fab Dirt Bike Carrier # UF48-979033 weighs right at 52 pounds, so the combined weight will be 332 pounds. If your Equinox is rate for the 350 pound capacity, you will be good to go.
One add on part I recommend when using a carrier like this is the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch # RM-061. This clamps around the hitch and the shank of the carrier and holds everything securely in place. There can be a lot of movement when heavier things are carried and this will negate all of that.
