Question:
Im new to camping and interested in buying a pull behind trailer. My car is a 2006 Pontiac Torrent with 121K miles. It has a 3500 tow rate. Im looking to purchase a small 2400 lb dry weight rpod 18. Is my SUV capable of towing this load?

Hi Adele!
Your 2006 Pontiac Torrent, which is a name I haven't heard in quite some time, is indeed rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds. With that said, it is getting a little up there in miles and age, so I would have a trust worthy mechanic (absolutely NOT a dealership) go over it to make sure everything is still in good order. If they give you the all clear, there is no reason your couldn't tow a 2,400 pound R-Pod 18 wherever you want!
Do you have all the parts needed for towing? If not, I have what I would recommend listed below:
Hitch: etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Matte Black Finish - Class III - 2" # e98865
Wiring: Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118391
Ball Mount: Draw-Tite Ball Mount for 2" Hitches - 2-3/4" Rise - 4" Drop - Extra-Long - 6,000 lbs # 40345
Ball: 2" Hitch Ball - 1" Diameter x 2-1/8" Long Shank - Chrome - 7,500 lbs # 63845
Pin + Clip: Pin and Clip for 2" and 2-1/2" Hitches - 5/8" Diameter x 3-3/16" Span # C21500
Optional Locking Pin (instead of the Pin + Clip): Tow Ready Trailer Hitch Receiver Lock # 5201
If the R-Pod you are looking at has brakes (I think most R-Pods do, but not knowing which exact model, I can't say for sure), you will also need these two parts:
7-Way Wiring Upgrade Kit: Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller - 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat - 10 Gauge Wires # ETBC7
Brake Controller: Tekonsha Voyager Trailer Brake Controller - 1 to 4 Axles - Proportional # 39510 (optional pigtail wiring harness # 20127)
The # ETBC7 7-Way upgrade kit will piggyback off the 4-Flat # 118391 wiring harness, so both will be needed if the R-Pod has brakes. I mentioned the # 20127 pigtail wiring harness for the brake controller being optional as you could just snip the plug off the back of said brake controller and hardwire it, which is what I would do.
I know this is a lot of parts and information to take in, so please let me know if you have any questions on any of this stuff (or other stuff too, if you think of anything). I have been doing this for quite a while and am here if you need anything!
