Installing Trailer Hitch on 2012 Chevy Equinox with Rusted Weld Nuts

Question:

I have a 2012 chevy equinox LT model that I would like to install a hitch to the frame. Looks like the weld nuts are very rusted and I am going to have someone help with tapping them. One weld nut appears to slightly stripped from someone trying to tap it. Any suggestions on how I can still install a hitch on my vehicle? There are not a lot of options for installing a bumper mount bike rack, so I would really like to utilize a hitch mount rack. Thanks

Dirty and rusted weld nuts are actually not too uncommon, in fact we have a dedicated article on exactly this subject that I have attached. You will want start by cleaning them out with a spray lubricant (WD-40, etc) and a simple wire brush. You may need to do this a few times depending on how much grime and corrosion is built in.

As for the nut that looks to be a bit stripped, your best option will be to use a screw tap like what you mentioned and see if you can then thread a bolt in. I have also attached a couple video demonstrations that might help with this process.

For a trailer hitch that is confirmed to fit your 2012 Chevy Equinox, I recommend the etrailer Class III # e98865.
