Rugged, Matte Black Finish

The sturdy steel construction is protected with a matte black finish for added durability. This unique powder coating gives etrailer hitches a carbide-like appearance and a rugged look that sets them apart from traditional glossy hitches. In addition to being rust and corrosion resistant, the tough matte coating hides dirt, scuffs, and dings better than a glossy finish.

Video Transcript for etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Installation - 2019 Toyota Highlander

Today on our 2019 Toyota Highlander, you're gonna be taking a look at, I'm gonna show you how to install the etrailer.com class three trailer hitch receiver. This is what our hitch looks like when it's installed. You can see the cross tube is visible, but it's nice and tucked up close to the bottom of the fascia. And has a round tube design so it fits nicely with the contour of the vehicle. Now this hitch is gonna have a triple carbide black powder coat finish, which is really gonna resist chipping, rust, and corrosion. It's gonna be a class three hitch so it's gonna work great for your class three accessories. We're gonna have a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening, reinforced collar will give us a little extra stability there.

Hitch pin holes are gonna be five eighths inch in diameter. Gonna take a standard five eighths hitch pin.Now the hitch pin and clip does not come with this hitch. However, it can be found here at etrailer.com. We're gonna have plate style safety chain loops. It's gonna have a plate that's welded to the bottom of our receiver tube and cross tube.

And you see we have large openings. It's gonna accept different size hooks. Now as far as weight capacities go, we're gonna have a 900 pound max tongue weight, which is down pressure on the inside of the receiver tube. 6,000 pound gross trailer weight, which is a trailer plus the load included. You can use weight distribution with this hitch. Tongue weights gonna stay the same at 900 pounds.

Trailer weights gonna go up to 8,000 pounds. I do recommend checking the owners manual of your Toyota to make sure that vehicle can withstand that amount of weight. You're gonna pick the lowest number between the vehicle and the hitch. Now let's give you a few measurements to help you when deciding on an ehitch mount accessories you may need. From the center of the hitch pin hole back to the outer most part of the bumper is gonna be about a half inch. From the ground to the top inner most part of the receiver tube, it's gonna be about 16 and a half inches.

Now let's show you how to get this installed. Now before you start your installation, it's a good idea to go ahead and lower your spare tire. Then we're gonna remove our two appearance panels on the bottom driver side and passenger side. We're gonna have a couple of push pin fasteners that look like this. And then we're gonna have a couple bolts like this. We'll use a 10 millimeter socket to remove those. You can take a flathead screwdriver or trim panel tool if you have one like this. Pop out the center. And make sure you bring the base with it. Then we'll have two fasteners on the inside. We'll use a 12 millimeter socket to remove those. It's easier if you just put some downward pressure on it too, 'cause these are plastic. Pop our panel out like that. On our passenger side, we're gonna remove this tab here. We're gonna use an 11 16ths socket to remove the large bolt and a 10 millimeter socket to remove this one. And on both frame rails, we're gonna remove the plastic plugs and the two rubber plugs. You use a flathead screwdriver or trim panel tool like I'm using here. We're gonna be using the three weld nuts on both frame rails. Because they we're covered, shouldn't have anything in the threads, but what I suggest doing is taking your hardware and hand threading it into the hole, just to make sure there's nothing stuck in there. If it is, I suggest maybe spraying some lubricant or something up in there, taking a tube brush, and cleaning the threads really well. Our exhaust deflector, we need to cut it back. We're gonna measure two inches from the hinge right here back this way. And you can see how I have it marked there. I'm just gonna take a Dremel tool with a cutting blade on it. Should cut it pretty easy. And we'll take a utility knife and I'm gonna clean up the edges here. This is to knock off the burrs. Now with an extra set of hands, we'll lift our hitch into place, over our exhaust on our passenger side. For our hardware, we're gonna be using an X bolt, conical toot warchur 00:04:17. We wanna make sure that the teeth are facing up towards the hitch. We'll get one in on each side to hold our hitch in place. It's gonna be the same combination of hardware for all six holes, three holes on each frame rail.Next, with a three quarter inch socket, you're gonna tighten and then torque all of your hardware to the specification in the instructions. Next we need to trim our underbody panel for our driver side. What you wanna do is turn it upside down like this. This is actually the way it's gonna be installed. And we're gonna file these rib lines right here. We're gonna go on the inside of this rib line, we're gonna come on the inside of this one, over, and then up. Now your directions are gonna show you going straight up from here. In this hole we're showing it way over here.So what we're gonna do is we're gonna come up and we're gonna go beside that hole 'cause we don't wanna lose that attachment point. That's for the front, or for the most rear part of this panel. For the back part of the panel or front part of the panel, we're gonna go down three inches and then over four inches right in this corner. And again we'll clean off the burrs. Just kinda clean it up a little bit. Now we'll get our underbody panel put back in place. Test fit it and make sure there's not any further adjustments we need to make. Looks like it fits pretty well. Go ahead and reinstall your fasteners. You can reinstall your spare tire and you're ready to go. That'll do it for a look at an installation on the etrailer.com class three trailer hitch receiver on our 2019 Toyota Highlander.

The hitch is great and installation holes were perfect. However, the box was about 75% ripped open on one end upon delivery and there were no instructions. I was anticipating that a small amount of "trimming" might be required, but it turned out to be a large amount of trimming & fitting to make the plastic shrouds fit around the hitch. Had I known this I probably would still have ordered this hitch, but some instructions would have been nice! 641464

I priced trailer receiving hitches all over town! All prices installed was close to $300. I found on etrailer. Com a part number e 98844 for $134 with a great video of how to install it. It arrived this afternoon and I installed it on my 2018 Highlander I did need one extra person to hold it up while I started the boat. It was a piece of cake the whole job to approximately 1 hour packaging was excellent no rips tears , dings etc. This hitch was purchased a long with a swagger bicycle rack from etrailer.com also. it was a perfect fit perfect match perfect experience all the way around! 609455

Installed with a friend on our 2016 highlander, didn’t have to put it up on a lift, plenty of room to work underneath. Instructions were decent and there are good videos on this website as well. Use it for hauling bikes with a Thule hitch rack. No complaints. 536001

Easy install by myself which took about 1 and 1/2 hours which included the wiring. I used a foot and a leg to hold up the drivers side while I got the bolts started…. took to Advil before I started at 65 you get more aches and pains laying on the floor under a car/suv….LOLPerfect product and perfect fit….my towing fuse was marked 20 like another poster had stated.Customer service is excellent at E-trail and always willing to take the extra step in customer service….Thanks team! 535730

2014 Toyota Highlander

I got the trailer hitch & wiring kit yesterday and installed both on my 2014 Highlander in about 4 hours. It was fairly straightforward, but a couple of things should be noted. The fuse box under the hood requires a 30 amp fuse for the trailer, you supplied a 10 amp however the converter has a 10 amp fuse. I had a 30 amp fuse so I just installed it in the empty slot for the trailer circuit. Another thing is that if you wish to continue to use the existing tow hook bracket the bolts supplied are not long enough but I simply discarded the bracket as the trailer hitch itself can be used for this purpose. I also wish there was a more convenient way to route the 4-conductor flat plug for the trailer outside instead of just laying it over the rear deck and closing it. It would be helpful to have two people to lift and hold the hitch while bolting it to the body but I did it myself by using wood blocks on one side while putting the bolts in on the other side. Other than that, the hitch looks great, and is heavy enough for my utility trailer and perhaps greater loads. I'd buy it again. 535769

From start to finish, this is a great product and a great buying experience. I had shopped this product around on the internet, and found that the videos, documents, and customer service from etrailer was where I would spend my money. I was not disappointed. I ordered this item on a Tuesday, received status updates from George at etrailer via email, UPS showed up on Friday evening (7:19pm according the the tracker on the site), and had finished cleaning up my tools and the garage floor by 9pm. The video on the site was for my exact vehicle, everything fit as prescribed, and while I expected that I'd have to use your video for the install, the printed instructions were all that I needed. For the do-it-yourselfer's out there, it is mentioned in the video that you don't have to loosen the exhaust to install the hitch. That is correct. I laid a piece of cardboard on my garage floor and went to work. I thought about putting the rear wheels on my car ramps, but there is ample room to work without it. You will need two people to guide the hitch in from behind so that you can sneak over the rear exhaust if you choose not to loosen it from the hangar, but my wife helped me do that, and then I set her side of the hitch on a tall bucket until I got a pair of bolts installed on my side. The most time consuming thing is trimming the plastic underbody pieces, but there's no way around that. I used my dremel as they showed in the video. I wouldn't want to try that with a utility knife, as that is some tough plastic, but that's a Toyota thing, not an etrailer thing. I even received a follow up from George this morning (Saturday), letting me know that his system showed that the delivery was made last night. You may find this item for a few bucks cheaper elsewhere, but when I buy a speciality item like this, I need to be sure that there is someone to help me. Thanks! 535768

The hitch was delivered in 2 days. I installed it in an hour. I like that it's a tubular bar instead of the usual block of metal. Also liked the fact that it's bolt on using existing fittings instead of drilling new holes or welding. You have the choice of removing or modifying the plastic cover on the driver side so it fits. Only had to cut out about a 1 inch wide strip from the plastic to modify it so still able to use the cover as intended. The other nice fitment is that it only protrudes past the bumper by about an inch tops. So walking into it not really an issue. Have no intention of towing anything but wanted a nice hitch for a lateral bike rack instead of hanging them on the vehicle door. This hitch will work nicely while looking good. I highly recommend the custom hitch. 621866

Ordered this product based upon a recommendation from a neighbor who also has a Highlander. We installed it yesterday and the video and other reviews were spot on. The prep takes more time then the actual hanging of the trailer hitch (ie the removing of the plastic coverings and cutting them, etc.). It definitely was a 2 person job to help hold and install. I am more than pleased with this product and can not wait to attach out bike rack to it for a ride. Also and most importantly, I can not stay enough about etrailer.com. They follow up with emails and want to make sure you are all set with the product. I highly recommend their site. 535981

great product. i thought the package for shipping was a bit sloppy. the hitch was in box loosely with other ordered items. i would've preferred that the hitch be packed separate from the other items. luckily none of the other items were damaged from the weight of the hitch. the box was beaten up pretty good by ups. otherwise great! easy install. perfect fit for 2015 highlander. trimming plastic shroud was only cumbersome part of install. 535771

2019 has a brace bolted on the right rear frame rail forward mounting bolt location, just in front of the muffler. Remove the M12 bolt and discard the brace and bolt before mounting the hitch. Otherwise the instructions were accurate, approximately 30 minute solo install on the ground using a motorcycle jack for support. 593116

2017 Toyota Highlander

The trailor hitch receiver for my 2017 Toyota Highlander is nicer than I expected. I looked at a few other brands on line, and decided on this one because I know of this company as reputable from past purchase. Also the finish on this model has a dull powder black finish which makes it blend in with the fascia under the rear bumper. I installed it in about an hour by myself using a sturdy platform and a couple jack stands to hold it in place while installing the six bolts. Having a helper would probably make the job easier. It's very sturdy and looks great. The primary reason for this purchase was to attach a bicycle carrier, and possibly a utility trailer. The only thing that could be improved is the packaging of the product. The cardboard was ripped open due to the awkward shape of the hitch being loose in the box. As a result, there is a small scratch on the metal that's not noticeable. I would recommend this product... 5 Stars !!! 551134

I had a really great experience with etrailer. Customer service was extremely attentive and friendly. I ordered one model online and was called that day to inform me that there was a two week delay from the manufacturer, they helped me find a suitable alternative that was in stock and ready to ship. The install was a perfect fit, the directions were quite clear and easy to follow. Shipping was fast and reasonable, packaging was sturdy resulting in a new trailer hitch free from scratches dings or dents. Price was comparable to other online retailers. I would absolutely recommend them and would purchase from them again. 535984

I am pleased with the product and found the installation video more useful than the instructions. I believe the instructions have the left under panel diagram inverted and I did not need to make the cut towards the front of the vehicle. A utility knife worked well to make the cuts for the left panel but the passenger side panel was thick and required a dremel. The instructions call for torquing 12mm bolts when they are really 19mm bolts.I attempted to install the hitch myself by making a center-of-the car oriented ramp to slide the hitch up into place. I used an old jack under the lower portion to raise everything to optimum height. It required too many hands so I ended up having my wife raise and lower the jack as i slid everything into place. Everything fit. 535942

I installed an E-trailer hitch on my 2018 Toyota Highlander yesterday. This makes the third E-trailer hitch I've installed. I am very pleased with the installation process. The instructions are very clear and the videos are a great help. I did them all in my driveway with a little help from my wife. I highly recommend E-trailer. I appreciate the quick shipment and the on-line support resources. 542010

I purchased this product exactly one year ago, (received prompted email from etrailer asking me to leave a review of my experience after 1 year). I do remember the purchase being seamless and the installation video online was extremely helpful for me. I installed the trailer hitch myself in under an hour with a cordless impact gun. So far....NO RUST! I live in an area where we received nearly 200 inches of snow last year and they pound the roads with salt. I hate the look of rusted parts and was waiting to see what would happen to this receiver. Everything looks good.. even the areas where the chains hook to for safety. The e-coat paint hasn't rubbed off yet... Also, I wanted a low profile hitch that didn't stick out from the bumper a lot. This one satisfied that need nicely. Looks great on the back of the car. Some receives stick out a couple inches and I don't like that look. This one integrates nicely. Hopefully someone finds this review helpful. Thanks 535987

Installed on a 2019 Toyota Highlander. Well made, fit perfect after doing some minor trimming of the cheap plastic crap Toyota installs on these new vehicles. Took about 35 minutes with help from my son to hold it up so I could get the bolts started. I did remove the spare tire and unbolted the rear exhaust hanger for more working room but everything went back in place afterwards. I did have to cut the edges of a metal bracket on the passenger side frame because the hitch use that same hole and mounts over the bracket. I plan to use the hitch to mount a cargo rack for camping supplies. I am pleased with this product. 677580

Comments

When a trailer hitch is constructed, the manufacturer uses softer steel in the side plates as opposed to the harder steel used in the crossbar and receiver tube. This allows the hitch to flex along with the vehicle to a certain degree. Unfortunately, this flexibility can also allow the hitch to get slightly bent out of position during shipping and handling. The good news is that its very easy to fix this if you know a few tricks as shown in the linked article. Its not recommended that the hitch be used until all the attachment hardware is properly installed and torqued according to the specs listed in the instructions.

Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Compare Trailer Hitches for a 2018 Toyota Highlander
  • There are a number of trailer hitch receivers that fit your 2018 Toyota Highlander and it can be confusing because they have a lot in common; however there are differences as well. Two of them, the Curt # C13200 and the etrailer.com # E98844, are virtually identical. A third, the Draw-Tite # 75896 is also the same basic design and installation. The biggest difference between these is the Curt and etrailer hitches have the hitch pin hole positioned about 1-3/4 inches further under the...

  • From my research the factory tow package available on the 2018 Toyota Highlander includes a trailer hitch receiver and 4-way trailer connector to power a trailer's lights. The trailer hitch I recommend is the Draw-Tite, part # 76156. I like that the hitch's cross tube is hidden behind the rear bumper and out of site. The only downside to this hitch is that it isn't rated for weight distribution. If you're going to be using a weight distribution system to tow a trailer then I recommend...

  • Yes, the etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver # E98844 is confirmed to fit your 2019 Toyota Highlander Limited Platinum. This custom Class III hitch will use existing holes in your Highlander's frame for a completely no-drill installation. It will provide you with a 2 inch receiver opening and it features a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds. I also really like the unique matte black finish on this particular model. I have attached an installation video on the 2018 model Highlander that...

  • Best 2-Inch Hitch for 2018 Toyota Highlander
  • There are both Class III and Class IV hitches made for your 2018 Highlander but all are the 2-inch receiver size. The one I recommend for its combination of high capacity, easier installation and value is the etrailer hitch # e98844 which offers 900-lb tongue weight and 6K towing ratings. This hitch will easily handle your towing and bike rack applications and it is compatible with your spare tire. Please refer to the linked installation video and the photo of this hitch installed...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch & Wiring for 2017 Toyota Highlander XLE Hybrid
  • For your 2017 Toyota Highlander XLE Hybrid the hitch I recommend is the USA-made etrailer 2-inch model # e98844 because it is compatible with your hybrid and because it offers easier no-drill installation than some of the other options. It is also compatible with a full size spare tire so long as that tire is not on an aluminum rim. I linked an installation video along with the written instructions so you can see the whole process. The etrailer hitch # e98844 has a substantial 900-lb...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Wiring for 2018 Toyota Highlander
  • For your 2018 Toyota Highlander, I recommend the etrailer.com Class III hitch # E98844 which has a nice matte black powder coat that matches the rear trim well. It has a high weight capacity and will work very well for your vehicle. I've attached a photo to assist. If you want a hidden cross tube, then the only option we currently have is the EcoHitch # 306-X7250 which is a nice clean look with a little more ground clearance. Then I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness...

  • Installation of etrailer.com Hitch Receiver on 2015 Toyota Highlander
  • The etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver # E98844 is a custom fit for your 2015 Toyota Highlander so it is an easy installation with just 6 bolts. There is no drilling required and installation time is estimated at 50 minutes. There is some under panel trimming required for this installation, but there is not trimming of the fascia. This is outlined in the attached photo and included in the installation time. Please also see the attached video installation. If you want to use this...

  • Trailer Hitch for 2019 Toyota Highlander LE Plus With Full Size Spare Tire on Aluminum Rim
  • While we do offer outstanding trailer hitches for your 2019 Toyota Highlander LE Plus, the etrailer.com Trailer Hitch # E98844 will not work because the width of the aluminum rim on your full-size spare is simply too wide to allow this hitch to fit. It is likely that none of the reviews mention this because those that have that rim, which I believe is standard on the LE Plus, have gone a different direction in their choice of trailer hitch, which would be the options from Draw-Tite. Both...

  • We do have an etrailer hitch for your 2018 Toyota Highlander, part # e98844, which fits both the Hybrid and gas models. This installs without drilling and it fits with a full-size spare tire so long as it is on a steel rim. The linked installation video, instructions and help article will show you the mounting process. As you'll see in the linked photo this hitch has a very clean appearance once installed. The etrailer hitch # e98851 which fits the 2003 thru 2008 Honda Pilot does also...

  • What Hitch Is Recommended For A Toyota Highlander Carrying A Bike Rack
  • If your only purpose for the hitch is a bike carrier, I would narrow down your choices to two hitches. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13200 and etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98844. Both are solid options that provide the same 2" of clearance from the top of the receiver to the farthest point of the bumper on your 2014 Toyota Highlander. Both provide a low profile, hidden appearance and so the key difference is for preference for the matte finish of the etrailer hitch or...

  • Recommendation for Trailer Hitch with Flush Receiver for 2019 Toyota Highlander
  • The etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver # E98844 referenced in your question is almost flush with the rear bumper but the receiver collar will indeed protrude just a tiny bit. If your main concern is a hitch that sits completely flush with the rear bumper on your 2019 Toyota Highlander then your best option is with the EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch Receiver # 306-X7250. Not only is the receiver flush with the bumper but this particular hitch features a hidden-crosstube design where...

  • Carrying an 18-1/2 Foot Canoe and Tandem Bike on a 2018 Toyota Highlander with Factory Roof Rack
  • There are canoe carriers that work with the bar spread of 27-1/2 inches on your 2018 Toyota Highlander. The Swagman Exo Aero # S65145 requires a minimum of 24 inches of bar spread. But I understand what you are saying. The canoe is so long you will need extra support. If your Highlander has a 2 inch trailer hitch or if you added one such as # e98844 you could then use a load extender such as the Yakima LongArm # Y01149 or MaxxTow extender # MT70231. These will essentially add a third...

  • Does Weight of Trailer Hitch Affect Vehicle Towing Capacity
  • The weight of a trailer hitch does not affect the payload capacity of a vehicle. We've asked our hitch manufacturers about this is in the past and they have told us that essentially the hitch becomes part of the frame so it's weight does not affect any of the weight capacities of the vehicle. This hitch part # E98844 that you referenced weighs 43 lbs. I attached an install video for this for you to check out as well.

  • Would A Trailer Hitch that Fit a 2013 Toyota Highlander Also Fit a 2015 Model
  • There was a generation change between the 2013 and the 2014 Toyota Highlander so you'd need a new hitch for your 2015 model as the one you have from the 2013 will not fit. So for that we have the etrailer.com hitch part # E98844 which does fit, has a 2 inch opening, and plenty of towing capacity. I attached an install video for the hitch for you to check out as well.
