Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real-life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Trailer Hitch Installation - 2019 Ram 3500

Hi there, Ram owners. Today we're going to be taking a look at and showing how to install Draw-Tite's Ultra Frame Class 5 trailer hitch receiver. This is for our 2019 Ram 3500 cab and chassis model. It bolts directly to the bottom of the frame and provides you with a 2" by 2" receiver here at the back. It's going to be great for all of your towing needs due to its extremely high durability and weight capacities. It offers a 1,500 pound tongue weight, which is the force going down on top of the receiver, which should be more than enough for your medium and larger size trailers.

it also has a 15,000 pound gross towing capacity, which is how much that it can pull behind it. Again, that's going to be more than enough for your medium and larger size trailers. It's also rated for use with a weight distribution system. When using one, your tongue weight will increase to 1,600 pounds and your gross towing capacity will increase to 16,000 pounds. Weight distribution systems will help take some of the weight off the rear axle on the vehicle and transfer it to the front to help level the ride back out, restoring lost handling and braking performance. If you're interested in those, we have those available here at etrailer.com.

With such high weight capacities, whether you're using a weight distribution or not, you should have no problem hooking up your flat bed trailer filled up with any kind of working equipment that you may need. Now, as always, I recommend you verify in your vehicle's owner's manual and ensure that you don't exceed any of its towing capacities. This hitch uses a 5/8" hitch pin and clip. Now one doesn't come included with the hitch, but we have plenty available here at etrailer.com. You'll also notice a small hole just to the rear of our hitch pin hole. This hole here will allow for the use of a j-pin.

A j-pin acts similarly as your hitch pin, going through the hitch pin hole. That has a small portion that loops around, going into the small hole here. The other end of our j-pin where it goes through the regular hole has a threaded nut, so it's pulled tight, and the small piece here presses against anything in our receiver, acting as an anti-rattle device. On the bottom of our hitch we have plate-style safety chain loops. Now they are kind of a smaller opening for such a heavy duty hitch, with a lot of meat around here. So some of your smaller safety chains may have some difficulties getting attached to it.

You're more than likely using this for heavy duty applications, though, so your larger chains should have no problem. If necessary, we do have quick links available which can help you adapt the safety chain loops to work with any safety chain out there. Now I've got a couple of measurements here for you. One of the ones we typically give is from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper. Since we don't have a bumper, we're just going to be using the end of our receiver here, which measures about 2-3/4". From the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube, it measures about 20". This measurement's important when determining if you need a drop, a rise, or a raised shank on any of your accessories. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let's go over the installation together so you can have the confidence to do it at home. We'll begin our installation at the back of the vehicle. Right at the very end of the frame you'll have a rivet located on each side. We're going to drill these rivets out as it's going to be our starting point where we're going to be mounting our hitch. We're going to use a 3/8 drill bit to remove the rivet, so just starting at the center of the rivet just drill right on through.Once you've got it drilled, the bottom sometimes can come off, but the rivet can still be stuck in the hole. Just use a hammer and a punch to knock the rest out. We'll then repeat the same process on the other side. Once we've got the rivets out, we'll need to enlarge the holes using an 11/16 drill bit. Then we'll enlarge the hole on the other side as well. Now that we've got our holes drilled out, we'll be using our hitch as a template to drill out the rest of our holes. We're going to hold the hitch up there, line it up with the holes we just drilled, and clamp it in place. Now instead of clamping it using clamps, you could just use the hardware that comes in your kit. I'm going to drop the bolt down from the top. On the other side, you could do the same thing. I'm hesitating to drop it down for the moment just because I know I have to lift the hitch up over our license plate bracket. I know it'll get in the way. We can slide it up and put our nut on that will hold it up. We can tighten it down and see where we need to drill everything else out. With an extra set of hands, we're going to lift the hitch up. It is very heavy, so I highly recommend getting somebody to help you with it. We're going to use the rearmost holes in our hitch, line those up. They're going to be slotted. Then start the nut onto each one. Once you've started the nut, the hitch will hold itself up, making it easier to tighten everything down. We can then snug the hardware down a little bit just to get it up against the bottom of the frame. We'll make sure it's center and then tighten it down so that way everything's going to be flush so we can use it for our template. You have a couple of options. You could just use your hitch as is right here and drill straight up through it using the hitch as a template. Or you could mark them and then take it back down. I'm going to go ahead and mark it and take it back down on this one just because it'll be a little bit easier for everyone to see. I'm going to mark the other side as well and then get these all drilled out using the same size that we did to enlarge the first hole. We'll now use our 11/16 drill bit again to drill out the holes that we had marked. If you'd like, you could use a smaller drill bit to start for a pilot hole and then step it up to 11/16. We've got a fairly decent bit here, and the metal seems to be soft enough that it drills through just fine, so we're just going to go straight with the 11/16.Now that we have this hole drilled out, we're going to repeat that for the remaining hole on this side and then other two on the other side. Before we put our hitch up, it is a good idea to move this wiring out of the way here. I already popped it out of this small hole here. You can see this. There's still another one right here, a little bit further towards the front of the vehicle. We're just going to use our screwdriver to pull that up. It can be a little hard to see. We're here on top of the frame so you can get a little bit better look. You just take your screwdriver down the frame, get up underneath the wiring, and then you can pop up that tab just so we can set it aside so we don't pinch it when we're tightening down our bolts. Now with all of our holes drilled out, with an extra set of hands we'll slide our hitch into position. We're going to start with the rearmost hardware. Just like we did before, slide that down through the holes and then start our nut on the bottom. Once we get it started on each side, the hitch will hold itself up, making it easier to get the rest of our hardware in. All of the hardware will just drop down through the holes that we drilled in the frame, down through the hitch. We'll place the nuts that come with it on the bottom side. We'll do this on the other side as well.We can then go back and tighten down all the hardware. We're going to use a 21mm wrench for the bolts, and we're going to use a 24mm socket for the nuts. It is a good idea to run it most of the way up, then run up one on the other side and just verify that it's centered, as these holes are slightly slotted. It should be pretty close because the other holes that we used in our template are not slotted. But it's always still just a good idea to double check yourself.Everything looks nice and even, so we can just finishing tightening everything down. We can then go back and torque all of our hardware to the specifications found in our instructions. That completes our installation of the Draw-Tite's Class 5 Ultra Frame 2" hitch receiver on our 2019 Ram 3500 cab and chassis.

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch

  • Trailer Hitch to Fit with Factory Hitch on 2017 Ram 3500
The Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Trailer Hitch # 41952 is a confirmed fit for the 2017 Ram 3500 Cab and Chassis models, but not the actual pickup truck version of this vehicle. If you have the pickup version of the Ram 3500 with the factory hitch you'll want to use the Curt # C15803 (fits both 6-1/2 ft and 8 ft truck beds) which will sit under your existing factory hitch and does not require any modifications like removing the cross member, as long as you have the factory bumper; this hitch...

  • Could Draw Tite Hitch # 41952 Fit on 2004 IC CE200
If the Draw Tite hitch part # 41952 has the correct mounting hole dimensions needed for your 2004 IC CE200 bus then there's no reason it wouldn't fit.

  • Can You Give Me The Dimensions Of The Draw-Tite Custom Fit Class V Hitch Receiver?
The Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class V - 2-1/2", # DT45518, is for a 2017 Ram 2500 or 3500 but not the Cab and Chassis model. For that you would want the Draw-Tite # 41952 for 2500, 3500, and 5500. I contacted Cequent who is the parent company of Draw-Tite and they gave me the dimensions for this hitch. It is 7-1/2 inches drop from the bottom of the frame to the top of the receiver collar and 8 inches to the top of the inside of the receiver tube. We do not...

  • Is Drilling Required to Install Trailer Hitch on 1989 Ford F-350 Super Duty Truck
All trailer hitches that fit your 1989 Ford F-350 are going to require drilling, and I also wanted to note that the Draw-Tite Ultra Frame Trailer Hitch # 41952 will not fit your truck; it is designed to fit mid-2010's Ram 3500-5500 cab and chassis. All trailer hitches that do fir your '89 F-350 are going to require drilling, and for a hitch that fits your F-350, a heavy-duty option similar to the one you referenced is going to be from B&W, and will depend on if your '89 F-350 pick-up...
