Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2011 Toyota Camry - Draw-Tite

Today on our 2011 Toyota Camry well be installing the Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 36416. Now heres what the hitch looks like installed on our vehicle. Now well go ahead and give you a couple measurements in helping you choose some accessories such as a bicycle rack, a cargo carrier or a ball mount. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper is approximately five inches. From the top of the opening in the receiver to the ground is approximately 10-3/4 inches. Now lets go ahead and install our hitch. Well begin here underneath the vehicle by installing a safety strap to help support the exhaust once we remove four exhaust hangers. Well go ahead and hook our safety strap in first and then were going to use a little spray lubricant and a large pry bar to work four rubber exhaust hangers loose.

Theres two at the rear portion of the muffler, one at the forward portion of the muffler and one a little bit further up located here. With these four hangers removed we can go ahead and lower the exhaust down to give us a little more working room. Well also need to remove two push fasteners that hold the rear fascia in place. Now on this particular vehicle the passenger side push fastener has been broken off but its exactly the same style as what were going to remove here on the drivers side. Simply take a small flathead screwdriver put it into the inner portion of the push fastener and gently work the center section outward. Once the center section of the push fastener has been pulled down some we can go ahead and remove the whole fastener. This will allow us to pull the rear fascia out enough to slide the hitch in between the frame and the rear bumper fascia. Now lets go ahead and point out the mounting locations that well be using.

Over here on the passenger side well be using these two holes right here in the frame. Now this particular vehicle does not have existing weld nuts here so we will have to use the additional nuts as well as flat washers supplied with the kit. Over here on the drivers side were going to need to remove this bracket here. Theres three bolts that hold it in and we will not be reusing the three bolts nor the bracket and this side does have existing weld nuts that well be threading into. Over here on the drivers side well be using an M10 hex bolt and a 3/8 conical tooth washer, making sure that the teeth on the washer are facing towards the hitch when installed. Now over here on the passenger side well be using again an M10 hex bolt, a 3/8 conical tooth washer and then on the back side where the existing weld nuts are located on the drivers side well be using a 7/16 washer and an M10 hex nut. Now that weve gone over the mounting hardware as well as the locations for the four rear mounting locations lets go ahead and get an extra set of hands to help us raise the hitch up into position.

As you raise the hitch up into position you will have to gently pull outward on the bumper cover to allow the hitch to slide in between the rear bumper cover and the frame of the vehicle. Now with the hitch held up into position well go ahead here on the drivers side and install an M10 hex bolt with a 3/8 conical tooth washer again making sure that the teeth face towards the hitch. Now that weve got one mounting location installed here on the drivers side well go ahead and go over to the passenger side. Well again take an M10 hex bolt and a 3/8 conical tooth washer and feed it from the front of the vehicle towards the rear. Well install our 7/16 flat washer followed by the M10 hex nut. If you do not have existing weld nuts on this side, you take a pair of needle nose pliers to hold the M10 hex nut. It makes things a lot easier until you get them started. Well repeat this process for both of these mounting locations.

Well then go back over to the drivers side and install the second M10 hex bolt and 3/8 conical tooth washer. Well go ahead and snug down a couple of the bolts so that the hitch pulls up into its position. Giving us an area where we need to drill each of our half inch holes through the trunk pan, well need to go ahead and clear out the trunk before we can drill these holes. Well need to remove any liner thats in the trunk as well as the spare tire or anything else that might be in the way. Now that our trunks been cleared out we can go ahead and drill our two holes. Well begin by starting with a pilot bit and finishing up with a half inch drill bit. Now that each of the half inch holes have been drilled well need to go inside the trunk area and scrape the foam rubber thats around each of our holes. We want each of the spacer blocks to have all metal to metal contact. We dont want any foam insulation left between the trunk pan or the spacer block. Well just use a large flat head screwdriver and scrape some of the insulation away. Well go ahead and test fit our spacer block to make sure weve removed enough. Now that we have the insulation scraped away from the interior of the trunk pan well go ahead and vacuum it out. Now before we can install the hardware here at these two locations its a good idea to put some silicon gasket maker around each of the holes to seal them off once the hardware is installed. Well be using the LocTite RTV 598 High Performance Silicon Gasket Maker, part number LT37467. Now before we can install the hardware from the top side here were going to need to go back underneath the vehicle and slip the other spacer blocks in between the trailer hitch and the underside of the trunk pan. Depending on how tight you have the trailer hitch you may need to loosen up the bolts at the rear of the hitch to allow the hitch to pivot forward enough so you can slide your spacer block into position. Now that weve installed each of the spacer blocks in between the trailer hitch and the underside of the trunk pan we can go back up into the trunk itself, slide the half inch nut through the spacer block and drop it down through the hole. Then on the underside well put the half inch lock washer followed by the half inch hex nut. Now we did find on these two mounting locations its best to have an extra set of hands to help hold the bolt on the top side as you tighten down the underside as well as torqueing it down to the manufacturers specifications. These will keep things from turning in the trunk pan and then torque them to the manufacturers specifications. Now that we have these two locations tightened down as well as torqued to the manufacturers specification well go ahead and do the four remaining locations. Well go ahead and tighten those down and then torque them to the manufacturers specifications. And put any push fasteners back that we removed earlier. Now that we have all the hardware torqued down were ready to put the exhaust hangers back up into position. If you use a little bit of spray lubricant again on each of the rubber hangers theyll slide back on much easier. Now that we have all four of our exhaust hangers back into position we can remove the safety strap and put anything back in the trunk that we removed earlier. And with that, that will complete the installation of our Draw-Tite Hitch, part number 36416 on our 2011 Toyota Camry. .

Ford Edge

My hitch arrived quickly, but the box was a bit damaged. All the parts and instructions were securely taped to the hitch itself, and none of them were damaged. I chose this hitch and this company because of the very helpful video that accompanied the description of the hitch. The price was also right along with the free shipping. I also figured that I could put the hitch on myself. I have never used a torque wrench nor drilled through metal before, but that proved to be no problem at all. I was able to install the hitch by myself. I did it with the back wheels of the Camry on the edge of my garage. The approach to my garage slopes down, so there was enough room for me to get under the car to install the hitch. In order to hold the hitch in place to bolt it to the car, I used 2 jack stands. They held the hitch very well. I am so happy to have done this myself and was able to save lots of time and money. 21360

2008 Lexus ES 350

This is an excellent product, despite giving only 4 stars. Let me explain. I installed it on my 2007 Lexus es350, but with much more difficulty than implied by the 2008 es350 install video. I'll admit I'm not a seasoned mechanic, but there are a couple of big gotchas that should be noted for installers of the 2007 es350 model. Problem#1) It's not THAT big of a deal, but the hitch directly interferes with the metal tabs that previously held the bumper fascia. The ONLY way to install the hitch on a 2007 model is to either bend the tabs flat or cut them off. It's OK they are not needed but the instructions need to state that, at least for some Lexus models. Problem#2) The hitch could not be positioned into place such that the bolts were aligned at both ends at the same time. It was off by 3/8 in or so. OK, not a lot, but human strength was to no avail. The missing instruction is that you need to align the hitch to get one bolt started at one end. Then, use a hydraulic jack and some 2x4 blocks to lift the other end to make it align at the other end. That did the trick. But, playing around with these two issues took some time and frustration, so I have no brags about a quick installation, like other reviewers. I thought it quaint that the instruction video spent one sentence about bolting the hitch in place. Complaints about the instructions aside, I'm impressed that the hitch is quite solid and well-hidden behind the bumper. It looks great! I recommend this product. 568475

2008 Toyota Camry

this hitch fit the 2008 toyota Camry perfect, and on a good note, for most who read directions,if you have the 4 cylinder engine with the tail pipe on the passenger side, you don't have to loosen the exhaust mounts. simply snake the hitch over the tail pipe first and then install the outside bolt to hold in place. undo the 2 plastic skirt retainers and lift the hitch in place on the drivers side and install the rest of the bolts and torque to specs. clean the crap from your trunk, remove spare tire and drill your two 1/2" holes from under the car for the main support brackets.add shims and torque. total time,20 minutes and 1 beer !!! awsome product, ya, the beer too !!! 21226

2011 Toyota Camry

I chose the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch because the crossbar is relatively unseen on my car, a 2011 Toyota Camry. This hitch model does require drilling into the trunk void but that wasn't difficult (other than having to empty the trunk and remove spare tire). There are other models that don't require drilling but the crossbars are clearly visible from the rear of the vehicle. The installation video provided on the etrailer website was very useful. I was able to install by removing only the 2 rear exhaust mounts to gain enough clearance to work a socket easily. I will be using this with a Kuat Sherpa bike rack to transport my bicycles 127179

I actually think it took me longer to find the jack point and save place to put a jack stand under my Camry than it took to install this. The instructions that come with the hitch are not the best. The video was very helpful. My only big concern is the factory installed angle bracket I had to remove from the Camry not being put back. I'm not sure what the purpose of the bracket was but I don't see Toyota just installing random brackets for no reason. A smaller concern is the bolt head in the spare tire section. I'm worried it will rub through the spare tire eventually. I would recommend manufacturer use a carriage bolt instead of a hex bolt but that is just my 2 cents. I will probably just glue a piece of carpet or something over it. 107267

The hitch was an easy install for one person with a floor jack, if you want more elbow room. You don't need to drop the exhaust on a Toyota Camry LE to complete the install. 402079

The hitch was for a 2007 Toyota Camry. The installation was easy after watching the videos on how to install it. It requires drilling a couple of holes in the tire compartment but following the instructions carefully and sealed everything well and everything is just fine. I recommend this product for anyone because the installation is really easy. 732713

2011 Toyota Camry

The hitch was exactly as ordered and fit perfectly. It is sturdy and a great value. It arrived quickly to CA. I really liked the videos and reviews on the site which gave me ideas and a sense of knowing I was installing everything correctly. I, like most of us, do not have access to a lift, but I used the ramps I have for oil changes on our cars. I just backed up on them and and chocked the front wheels. I also do not have lifting help and I am 71 so I set the hitch on a floor jack and my wife raised it up as I guided it in behind the bumper cover. I read a review that said he was able to install without dropping the muffler, and I did the same. Thanks for that tip, it was easy. Our Camry had weld nuts on both sides, maybe because it is one of the early 2011 models, which made it very easy. Let me say that I can see the muffler drop if you are using power tools. But if you are using good old had tools it really is not necessary. Another comment about the reviews. One review expressed concern over ware on the spare from the added bolts and the fact of permanently removing a factory bracket. This must have been a brother of mine as I had the same thoughts when I viewed the installation video before ordering. If you have a "donut" spare, like most, with it in the well look through the center hub with a flash light, the added bolts and plates are inside the rim area and never contact the actual tire. The second concern of the bracket removal, after looking at what it was bolted to, and where the added hitch, which is much stronger, is secured, I have no concerns the the bracket is now needed. After clearing the trunk, getting the tools together, and backing on the ramps. From start to final torque down of the bolts it was right at an hour. Note: My wife was very pleased with the hidden appearance of this hitch on "her" car. Always a success when the wife is happy. I recommend this model hitch and ETrailer and will refer friends. 639593

I was going to be installing the hitch after supper one evening so after I read the instructions I looked under the car for all the bolts, figured out what size they were and got everything set to go. It took about an hour to install the evening I installed it, the only thing I hadn't anticipated was that I had to jack up the car to get my drill under to drill the holes that were needed 613243

the box arrived in pretty bad shape. however the receiver was undamaged and was installed at work in the parking lot during my lunch hour, I needed a 2nd pair of hands for less than 5 minutes. very happy with every aspect off this receiver, my only suggestion would be to offer it with a 2'' receiver option as there are more accessories available in that configuration and you wouldn't have to deal with any adapters 611606

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch

  • Is Trimming of Fascia Needed to Install Trailer Hitch in 2007 Lexus ES350?
I took a look at the installation instructions for both the Curt # C12343 hitch and the Draw-Tite # 36416 hitch to see if any fascia would need to be trimmed, and the Curt mentions that it may require fascia trimming. However, the Draw-Tite # 36416 will not, as you can see in the installation video I've linked showing the Draw-Tite being installed on a 2008 ES 350, which will be the same as on your '07 model.

  • Can Draw-Tite # 36416 or Hidden Hitch # 90152 on 2008 Toyota Camry LE Handle 4 x 8 ATV Trailer
Although the Draw-Tite, # 36416, and Hidden Hitch, # 90152 (no longer available), trailer hitch receivers have a 300 lb tongue weight capacity and a 3500 lb towing capacity which would be sufficient for a trailer carrying 750 lbs, you are going to be limited by the capacity of your 2008 Toyota Camry LE. Since the Camry is designed primary as a passenger carrying vehicle, Toyota doesn't provide a specific towing capacity. In this case you'll just need to make sure that the load of the...

The hitch I recommend is the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 36416. It is a good fit for your car with a 1-1/4-inch receiver, a weight capacity of 3500 lbs and a tongue weight of 300 lbs. It comes with a complete hardware kit and requires no welding during installation. You will want to check the towing and tongue weight capacity of your vehicle prior to using any trailer hitch. If the weight capacities between the vehicle and hitch are different, always use the lower of the two. I have...

  • Trailer Hitch for a 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid
Curt trailer hitch # C12343 is indeed listed as a fit for your 2007 Toyota Camry Hybrid. It also fits non-Hybrids which is probably why it looks different than the video. Curt also says you have to use stabilization strap # 18050 when using this hitch for any non-trailer load (such as a bike rack or car go carrier) per their warranty requirements. If you want to avoid having to use a stabilization strap then go with Draw-Tite hitch # 36416. It does not have that requirement.

We offer one hitch for your 2011 Toyota Camry Non-Hybrid SE, part # 36416 from Draw-Tite. This is a Class II hitch with a 1-1/4-inch receiver opening. No 2-inch hitches are offered for your 2011 Camry. This is because hitch makers base their hitch sizes and weight capacities on the structural strength of the vehicle's frame, where the hitch mounts. In the case of your 2011 Camry the frame structure is strong enough to handle the load of a Class II hitch, but not the load typical of a 2-inch...

Hopefully you have the # TH9024XT and you can just remove the 2 inch adapter and be ready to go. If you have a different bike...

  • Which Ball Mount to Use with Draw Tite Hitch for 2008 Toyota Camry
With Class I hitches like what you have on your 2008 Toyota Camry you have to use the recommended ball mount otherwise the warranty of the hitch is voided. For the Draw Tite hitch part # 36416 that you have you would need to use the part # 36071 which you referenced which has a 2-5/8 inch rise.

  • Fit of Draw-Tite Class II Hitch # 36416 on 2009 Lexus ES350
Curt offers a Class II hitch, part # C12343 that is a confirmed fit for your 2009 Lexus ES350. Curt tells me that this hitch will also fit a 2009 Camry. If you click the link I've provided, you can see an install video. At one time, Draw-Tite considered the hitch a fit for the Lexus ES 350. However, they no longer consider the hitch a fit and do not recommend attempting to install it on that vehicle.

  • Trailer Hitch Availability for a 2007 Toyota Camry SE
We do have the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 36416 that is compatible with your 2007 Toyota Camry SE. This is a Class II trailer hitch with a 1-1/4" receiver and it has a 3,500 lb gross trailer weight rating as well as a 300 lb tongue weight rating. When I looked up an online copy of your owner's manual it stated on page 327 that the max amount of trailer weight it can tow is 1,000 lbs and then it also stated that the max tongue weight of your Camry is 100 lbs. Even though the trailer hitch...

  • Recommend a Trailer Hitch To Carry Bike Rack on My 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid
The CURT Trailer Hitch, # 12343, will fit a 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid. The CURT Hitch # 12343 is a Class II 1-1/4 inch receiver and includes a drawbar, pin and clip. The strap in question is the CURT Bike Rack Strap with Cambuckle, # 18050. CURT warranty requires, all non-trailer loads including such things as bike racks and cargo carriers, use a support strap. To maintain the warranty on the hitch, the strap will need to be used. Since you will only be using the hitch for a bike...

  • Trailer Hitch for a 2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid to Carry a Bike Rack
Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 36416 is a great option for your 2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid. The plastic panel beneath the spare tire well is not an integral part of the vehicle and will not cause any harm if it is removed. It also should not require any additional cleaning or maintenance. When sealing up around the holes in the trunk pan you can use silicone such as # 0160297. The biggest issue is that you want to use an adapter to go from a 1-1/4 to a 2 inch. This will reduce the tongue...

  • Hitch Recommendation for a 2007 Toyota Camry XLE
There are 2 hitches available for your 2007 Toyota Camry XLE with a V6 and dual exhaust, the Curt hitch part # C12343 and the Draw Tite hitch part # 36416. I would recommend the Draw-Tite part # 36416. For trailer wiring you would want the Curt wiring harness part # C55567 and then for a hitch ball I would recommend the 1-7/8 inch ball part # 19256 or 2 inch ball # 19258.

  • Bike Rack Recommendation for 2010 Camry Carrying Fat Bike and Kids Bike
I have the perfect rack for you. The Saris Freedom Superclamp part # SA4025F can fit fat bike tires, can fit small kid sized tires like what you have and also only touches the bikes at the tires. It's also very lightweight at 30 lbs. Check out the review video I attached for more info. For a hitch then you'd want the Draw Tite part # 36416 which is confirmed as a fit for your 2010 Toyota Camry as well.

  • Removal of Black Plastic Covering on Underside of 2011 Toyota Camry to Install Hitch
I believe you are speaking of the plastic cover shown in the video I have linked to. Before the hitch installation, the cover is removed and is not re installed after the hitch is in place. Once the hitch is installed, the plastic cover will no longer fit on the Camry. Because the hitch needs to be in direct metal to metal contact with the underside of the vehicle once it is installed, the hitch cannot be installed over the cover. To view the video I mentioned and to see the install...

  • Hitch for 2013 Toyota Camry w/ Dual Exhaust
For a 2013 Camry, you'd want to use the Draw-Tite Class II, part # 36540. This hitch will fit a vehicle with a dual exhaust. The # 36416 hitch you referred to is a fit for the 2007-2011 Camry, so it won't fit your 2013 model.

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2013 Toyota Corolla
For carrying a bike rack with a hitch installed on a vehicle I recommend going with the Draw Tite hitches instead of the Curt as Curt requires you to use a stabilizer strap any time you carry a non-supported load like a bike rack like the Swagman part # S64670 that you referenced. So for your 2013 Toyota Corolla you would want the part # 24913 which is a confirmed fit and then for the 2010 Camry you would want the # 36416 which you referenced. The ball mount then that you would want...

  • Trailer Hitch Fit Options for 2007 or 2011 Toyota Camry XLE w/ Dual Exhuast
I checked with my contacts at Hidden Hitch, Draw-Tite and Curt, regarding the fit of the Curt # C12343, the Hidden Hitch # 90152 (no longer available) and Draw-Tite # 36416 Class II trailer hitches on your 2011 Camry. There would be absolutely no fit issue or interference with the dual exhaust. These hitches are compatible the 2007-2011 Camrys, so they'll work with either vehicle you referenced. I'd recommend the Draw-Tite model, unless you were planning on towing with the hitch, in...

  • Towing Capacity and Trailer Hitch Recommendation for 2009 Lexus ES 350
Based on my research, the 2009 Lexus ES 350 has a towing capacity of 1,000 pounds. I was able to find this information in section 2-5 of the vehicle's online owner's manual. I recommend checking your owner's manual to confirm this information. The trailer hitch I recommend for your 2009 Lexus ES 350 is the Curt Class II Receiver Hitch # C12343. This hitch will not require any drilling for installation. The Draw-Tite # 36416 will require drilling into the trunk pan of your ES 350. Both...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch For 2008 Toyota Camry SE V6
Yes, we do have a hitch that will fit your 2008 Toyota Camry SE V6, but the item you selected, Curt Trailer Hitch, part # 12343, will not fit the SE model of the Camry. I would recommend the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver, part # 36416, which is a Class II 1-1/4 Inch Hitch. To complete your towing setup you may be interested in the following: Draw-Tite Ball Mount, part # 36071 1-7/8 Inch Hitch Ball, part # 19256 2 Inch Hitch Ball, part # 19258 Pin and Clip, part # PC2 T-One Vehicle...

For your 2008 Toyota Camry with dual exhaust we have the Draw Tite hitch part # 36416 which is a confirmed fit and would work well. We've had several customers come back with dual exhaust vehicles and state that this hitch was a fit. I attached an install video for you to check out as well.

  • Could a Class II Hitch Be Used as a Recovery Point for Snow/Mud
The Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 36416 that you referenced wasn't exactly designed as a recovery point, BUT it has a trailer capacity of 3,500 lbs. So for snow it would work great since snow doesn't really hold the vehicle like mud can. If you are just in an area that is slick and aren't buried in mud the hitch should work well there too.
