Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2013 Mazda 3 - Draw-Tite

Today in our 2013 Mazda 3 we'll be installing a Draw-Tite hitch part number 24843. This is what our hitch should look like once it's installed. Next we'll give you a couple measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of the bumper is five inches. From the top of the receiver to the opening to the ground is eleven inches. This will assist you selecting accessories such as a ball mount bike rack or cargo carrier. Now we'll go ahead with installation.

First we'll go ahead and point out the attachment points. Each one of these attachment points is pre-drilled holes into the vehicle by the manufacturer. There are a total of four attachment points. Two on each side. Our frame rail attachment points will be a 7/16th carriage bolt and block that will use the 7/16th bolt leader to put into position.

Then we'll secure the hitch using the 7/16th flat washer, split lock washer, and nut. We'll need to put these in position before we put the hitch into place. Taking the pole wire we'll go through the attachment point and out the access hole. We'll slide on the block and thread on the carriage bolt. Then we'll go ahead and pull the block and carriage bolt into position leaving the pole wire on as it will assist us to get the hitch up into place without pushing our hardware back up into the frame. Note, each process we're going to do on one side will get repeated identically on the opposite side. Now with both carriage bolts in place we're ready to go ahead and install the hitch.

It's a good idea to get a extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install the fasteners. We'll raise the hitch up into position, pulling the carriage bolt down through the hitch. Then we can go ahead and remove the bolt leader. Install the flat washer, split lock washer, and nut. We'll install each one of our fasteners finger-tight until we have them all in place. Now, with both carriage bolts secured, we'll need to install the toe-hook fasteners. Our 3/8ths bolt and flat washer will go through the hitch and then the toe bracket.

We'll secure this hardware with a 3/8ths conical tooth washer, the teeth of the washer facing the hitch and a 3/8ths nut. Now with all our hardware in place, we can go ahead and tighten it down. Next we'll torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. And now with our hitch secured and torqued to specifications. We're ready to hit the road and that completes our install of the Draw-Tite hitch part number 24843 on our 2013 Mazda 3. .

The hitch is pretty much what I was looking for. We're only using it to mount a carrier to haul two bicycles around with no intention of asking it to any more than that. In that regard the hitch receiver is exactly what we wanted. I think it could have been boxed better as the hitch had punched thru the box in a couple of places and the box was way too big for the product so it bounced around during shipping, I suspect. The interesting part was that the instructions that came with the hitch were for a Chevy Impala! The instructions and drawings had nothing to do with mounting the hitch to a Mazda 3 but the good thing is that etrailer has excellent photos showing how the hitch is attached to the car and I used those. I was working at night with a single flashlight but it only took me about 20-25 minutes to get everything where it's supposed to go! It fit perfectly to the car and is rock solid. The bike rack tends to wobble a bit but with it secured in place we know it's not going to go anywhere while on the road. I've included a picture of the whole setup with bikes. The main thing is that I'm quite pleased with how it all turned out. We got what we wanted and installation was simple. When we get another car we will order another receiver hitch from etrailer. 120137

Still using it! Nothings come loose and Id still recommend it. The only issue I have with the hitch is that the two looped bars I guess to attach a chain from a towed trailer can get in the way when I or remove a cotter pin for the bike rack. But I can work around that and get the job done. I thought about cutting them off but when we eventually sell the car the next owner might want that feature.

I have not used the hitch yet, even though I installed it two months ago. Life gets in the way. But the install went relatively smoothly. I read where this can be done by yourself by using bricks to hold one side up while you secure the other, but me, I got a helper and that was still a bit of a challenge. The instructions are as good as can be expected I suppose, but the there is no substitute for the video that etrailer creates for your vehicle. Whenever you get 'stuck' on something, you just go back to the video and it made it perfectly clear which screw to use and how to thread the screw to the right location. Without the video, I would have become frustrated. The only minor issue I had was needing to buy a deep well socket for two of the bolts. The bolts are too long. I guess the extra length comes in handy for initially trying to put the nut on the bolt, but after that, just a bit too long. As stated, I have not used the hitch yet, but have no reason to believe I will have any issues. Very happy with my purchase - very good support team at e-trailer. 238632

A year later, Ive had no issues and no regrets buying this hitch. I would definitely use etrailer on future purchases.

The packaging was good and the installation is straight-forward. I'm very please with the product and experience but the instructions and parts I received were incorrect or incomplete. There was only one pull wire so I installed it "one side at a time". If you get one pull wire I suggest this: 1) Read the instructions. 2) Feed a carriage bolt with the pull wire. 3) Raise that side of the hitch and feed the wire and carriage bolt through the hole in the hitch. 4) Put the 3/8 hex bolt into its hole on that side and screw it's nut on. 5) Remove the pull wire and attach the washers and nut. Repeat on the other side. Then torque, etc. Actually, I removed the pull wire before I put the hitch in place because I could hold the carriage bolt from behind with my index finger. The pull wire is very cleaver and has a pretty tenacious hold on the threads. I think it would be more difficult to get it off the carriage bolt with the hitch in place. I did the installation without help. It took about 20 minutes, excluding placing the jack stands, etc.. 211711

Very little new to add to the reviews here: Ordering process and shipping speed were excellent. The hitch did bounce around a bit in the box, and one of the vertical bits was slightly bent instead of being straight. Rather than return it, I simply held the crossbar straight up with the vertical bits off the edge of the curb, and applied slight downward pressure to bend the vertical side bar back straight. The slight damage is why I gave four stars instead of five, since I had to do a tiny bit of metal-bending to make the holes for the vertical bolts line up. Installation was very easy, especially thanks to the excellent video on etrailer.com. I think it took only slightly longer to get everything finger tight than to watch the video! The pull wires are amazing, but you won't quite know what to do with them unless you watch the video. Like many others have noted, there was a run to the hardware store for a deep enough socket to get everything tightened up. Now I just need to figure out who is selling the Thule T2 Pro XT at a discount! 403350

Took me about an hour to install. had to run to Lowes and grab a deeper 11/16ths socket. Other than that a piece of cake! 231050

Thanks for reaching out. Thing has worked great for me. The car is pretty low so sometimes it scrapes going in or out of bad driveways, and I should probably get under there and tighten it up, but yeah, super satisfied with the purchase.

The product is excellent. Worked/fitted perfectly on my Mazda 3 Hatchback 2011. Couple of things though: • While I understand the efficiencies of buying in bulk one size of boxes, the shipping box was 75% air. WAY too big for the product. Still, product arrived with no damage, and was EXPERTLY packed. • If you are installing by yourself, having your vehicle on a lift, or being a yoga master are hugely helpful! Honestly, get yourself a friend to help out. Makes it MUCH easier. • ONCE I understood HOW to use the pull wires, things were much easier. But no where on the instructions did it show or explain how to use them. Besides that, it would also be helpful to append to the instructions a suggested tool list to have on hand before starting. These things aside, I'm really happy with my hitch, it's SOLID, perfectly matched to my car, and out of the way when not in use. Very happy with my purchase and will recommend to my friends in the future. Thanks! 16177

Great hitch. Shipped out next day, arrived in 2-3 days, install was straight forward. Make sure you have a deep socket (11/16") because the vertical bolt by the muffler was too tight to get a wrench at. Otherwise, installation was straight-forward and exactly as advertised on the website and video. I would highly recommend this hitch. 225337

It took me longer to gather my tools than install this hitch. Took me less than 10 minutes. I didn't even need the wire to fish the bolts through the frame on my Mazda3. With the rectangular washer attached, I held on to the washer and was able to put the bolt in the right spot easily. My only complaint is that the hitch arrived with several spots where the paint was rubbed off and showing bare metal. It would be so easy for etrailer to take a few seconds to look over the hitch before throwing it in a box and shipping it out. I had to wait another week for a can of touchup paint. That's the only reason I knocked down the rating from excellent. 67032

At this point I am not happy with this hitch. Claims to have a 200 pound tongue load but I can actually see and measure deflection of the reciever when placed under only a 120 pound load. This measurement is compaired to the body and not the ground, etc. This is a real safety issue for me. I am currently having Etrailer contact Draw Tite to show validation of testing on this model (Mazda 3 2012 Hatchback). I question if it is actually a sub class 1 (ie tongue load rating of 125 lbs). I do not recomend this product until these safety concerns are answered. If the hitch is not torquing around the 1.25" draw bar then the frame connection points chosen by draw tite are sub standard location points. 64974

I hope that I do not have to follow behind your trailer. The hitch is rated for up to 200 Lbs tongue weight but not your car.

Hitch still works great. Only used it a handful of times since I bought it, still easy to get the hitch in and out of the mount and still looks good!

What sets etrailer apart is their installation videos on Youtube. I discovered etrailer when doing a search for a hitch for my 2012 Sienna van 4 years ago. It showed it was a very easy install and it was! This time around on my Mazda, the installation video showed it was a bolt on also. I checked the prices locally to get the hitch installed and it was over twice the cost of the hitch from etrailer. I ordered my hitch which arrived very quickly and well packaged. The included instructions were clear. I reviewed the video again and the install when very well. I managed to over torque a bolt and sent a question to George and he responded on a Sunday! Overall very pleased with the products and service from etrailer! 398759

Awesome experience all the way around. They upgraded my shipping time at no cost, thus received it in 2 business days. Arrived with no issues. Installed hitch with no issues. Bike rack I got from them on the same purchase, very happy with that also, Swagman XC-2. That went together very easily also. Waiting for warmer temps here in Indy and hope to be on the trail and road biking soon. Thanks e-trailer for a great experience all the way around. They also sent me e-mails letting me know when item shipped, and to contact them with any questions. Keep up the awesome communication and products, just what I was looking for. Thanks, Scott 69245

As described. Really easy to install. I backed my car up on ramps to have some extra room. Very discreet looking as well. You can only see the hitch receiver. You can not se the cross bar unless you are low to he ground. 120875

Perfect fit on my '13 MazdaSpeed3. The only tricky part is holding it in place in order to get the nuts on the bolts. I recommend a jack or some bricks, so you can free your hands to work with the bolts. Mine will only be used for holding a bike rack, as I have nothing to tow. I used it yesterday and the fit is solid. Also, it's very low profile, so it doesn't stand out when looking at the rear of the car. As always, etrailer delivered a great quality product at a low price and with fast delivery. This is my third hitch purchase from etrailer, and I recommend them very highly. 137022

Hitch held like a champ. I connected a 4x8 trailer and drove from VA too TX and the hitch was as solid as a rock. No strange movement, no swaying what so ever. I would highly recommend this hitch, at least for my little Mazda 2013 hatchback. I saved a lot of money, that is why I did it. It was either this or renting a big truck. it was worth it. The T- connector is very easy to put on. It took me literally 3 minutes. P. S- You don't have to drill in the ground cable if you don't want to. Just be creative, but logical. Just secure it. 221030

I am very impressed with etrailer's products and services. I was shopping for a Hitch and bike rack for my 2011 Mazda3 hatchback and the site was very informative. I was able to find the exact fit for my vehicle. I also received free shipping which was definitely a plus due to the weight involved. They also, sent me an email, providing additional information to assist with the install. I would buy from etrailer again and recommend them as well. Thank you etrailer for a smooth & delightful shopping experience. 366423

The hitch was excellent quality and the install took less than an hour. I purchased this hitch for a 2012 Mazda 3 hatchback for use with a bike rack. My only oncern is that I have a Swagman G10 rack and with it folded up it rubs very slightly in the middle of the bumper. I do not leave the rack on full time so this is not issue for me but it might be worth a mention for anyone else with the same set up. Other than that, the hitch feels very solid on the car and I have no issues at all. 289097

Got this hitch to carry bikes behind my Mazda3 i HB. VERY straightforward install if you read the instructions and the reviews here. A second set of hands would've been nice but I shimmed up one side of the hitch on 2x4s. The bolts have to be long so you can put the thing together which means your 11/16 socket has to be really deep. Really. And I was unable to get my torque wrench in to service the horizontal bolts. All in all, it looks good and I've already carried the bicycle! 124912

I am incredibly impressed with etrailer.com! I placed the order on a Sunday and received it on Tuesday. The hitch installed easily and the bike rack I ordered with it was just as good. Took it on a test run and everything is sturdy. The price was very reasonable and I was happy to order from a specialized website rather than the big online shops. The videos and reviews were all very helpful. I highly recommend ordering from this site! Great customer service! 404727

I have just installed it onto my car, and the installation was easy! I have yet to use it for my intended purposes as a bike rack. I would like to also point out I had originally order the incorrect bike rack for this hitch. The team at etrailer caught this before shipping out my order, and we were able to have the correct one shipped. the customer service experience so far has been great I would buy from etrailer again. Thank you! 193007

Everything was perfect... except for a small mess up in the package of hardware. Should have had two 3/8 nuts, and two 7/16 nuts, but instead three 3/8 and one 7/16. Nothing a trip to the hardware store couldn't fix (and I hope substituting Grade 8 for the supplied Grade 5 nuts won't be a problem...) Packaging of my order by etrailer was first class. Would have rated 5-stars except for the hardware screw-up (nut-up???). 95844

The delivery was very fast, I had it at my door in two days. The product was exactly what I thought it would be. I installed it on a Mazda 3, it fit perfect and the only thing you see is the part that the ball attaches to. Easy to install it took about 30 min from start to finish. What a great company. Only if all the Internet company's were like this. Very helpful website. Thanks, I will always buy from here . 96301

Needed to install a hitch to pull a small trailer with all my track goodies (tires, race fuel, tool box) for my weekend adventures. This hitch was super easy to install and fitment is perfect. As always etrailer.com delivered the parts in excellent packing, no scratches, damages or missing components. 219027

Very easy to install. 2 people would be a benefit for 5 mins. The wire fisher were wonderful and I'm sure to use again on another product. The only bad thing was that I did not have 2- 7/16" nuts, was given an extra 3/8" nut but luckily I had one in my garage. I also doubled nutted them for safety of not coming loose. Great job. Now I have to figure out the wiring harness....not included. 176309

This receiver attached to my 2013 Mazda Hatchback so easily! Four bolts and done! I didn't need to remove any fascia supports or anything. It just bolted right in! It barely shows from underneath the rear bumper too! I'm psyched to finally test it with my new hitch mounted bike rack. The people at etrailer have been super helpful! Cheers guys! I've already recommended you to another friend. 154715

This product was installed on my 2010 Mazdaspeed 3. Install was easy once you understand how to use the wires to fish the bolts through the access holes. You will want an extra hand to hold the bar up while mounting. Overall its a great hitch, and in my opinion it doesn't stick out as much as the Curt hitch. If you are looking for the hitch that doesn't stick out the most, this is the one. 27697

Excellent product, showed up early & fit perfect 1st time. I like the 'Hidden' with 2 vertical (fished through holes) and 2 horizontal mounting bolts as opposed to others with 4 vertical bolts. Looks & feels solid. Of the 2 vertical bolts, I guessed the wrong pair of holes (50/50) & wasted 20 minutes until I looked at the directions VERY close. FYI: 2012 Mazda 3 5-door. 56326

I ordered the hitch and it arrived 2 days later. It was well packaged and clean looking. I installed it in the evening in about 40 minutes by myself with no stands or lifts. I just used a brick to hold it up while I threaded the bolts through the frame. It took some figuring out but went on pretty painlessly. I plan to use it with a cargo carrier and bike rack. 131506

I'm very happy with the results. 13689

Some 2 inch bike racks can be used in 1-1/4 inch hitches. An adapter would be need to make up the size difference. Not all bike racks are compatible with these adapters. Also, if you can use an adapter, they do reduce capacity. The tongue weight capacity of this hitch is 200 pounds, if an adapter is used, that capacity is cut to 100 pounds. This means the combined weight of the rack and bikes must be less than 100 pounds. I have included a link to all our adapters that will increase from 1-1/4 to 2 inch.

Trailer hitch fit perfectly and was easy to install. Instructional video on the website was very easy to follow. The only problem was that there were 3 11/16" nuts and only 1 9/16" nut, instead of 2 of each as there was supposed to be. This was a bit of a hassle as I then had to find an additional nut to complete the install. 430209

This is a great product and service from etrailer. I ordered the hitch and it arrived the next day. Installation is easy as can be. It took me longer to gather tools up after the job than the job itself. The bolt on the driver's side is a bit tight to the exhaust so it's a good idea to do the job on a cold engine. thanks much. 64232

Easy install. It only took about 35 minutes after watching the install video. Hitch does not interfere with any other stock component. Holds my bike rack and mtn bike with no problem and no noise. Hitch is perfect and so is the wiring harness. 5 minutes to hook up the lights and 25 minutes to install the hitch. Installed it by myself with the car on the ground. Excellent company to deal with. There was a little mix up with my address but they were on it immediately! Still arrived on time! I'm VERY happy! 105189

Easy to install. Didn't need ramps or anything. The wires supplied to help pull the bolt through the car frame was a huge help. Did the entire install in 30 min. Most of that was making sure I was using the right washers in the right spot. You can barely see the hitch if you try - very inconspicuous. 132556

The hitch fit prefectly and is well hidden from view. I used my hydraulic jack to raise the hitch into position so I didn't need any help installing it. Hitch balanced great on the jack. The wiring kit 119179 had no instructions on how to hookup the wires. Luckily, Etrailer has a good video showing it. 348580

Very easy to install. Luckily friend has a lift in his garage and his son helped as well. Having at least 2 people help install and a lift made this a 15 minute installation. Product seems solid. The printed instructions are clear enough, but I thought the videos made the installation easier. 304068

The product arrived on time and installed pretty easily. One of the bigger nuts was missing, they had include three smaller ones instead of two of each. Luckily my neighbor had one in his toolbox, saving us a trip to the hardware store. I would recommend sending a couple extra fasteners. 388941

Perfect Fitment. Easy install. Great price. For my rack, I had to order the 6" extension because when I have two bikes, the first bike is too close to the car. But it is not necessary if you're careful. (Btw, not promoting the dealer, just haven't taken the plate frame out.) 332985

Thanks for your review and your business. I am glad you brought up the extension for clearance! Just keep in mind that by using an extension, you are reducing your hitch capacity by fifty percent. Happy biking!

Product is made to tight tolerances and fit well. Hardware could have had a better designation between 2 types of washers that appear nearly identical, but otherwise, the install was relatively simple and done in about 45 minutes. This hitch is very well hidden under the car. 126072

Arrived 2 days after I ordered. Took about 45 Minutes to install. Probably could have done it in 30 minutes if i had deepwell socket and didn't need to find my maul give one side a love tap to fit inside the tie down hook. Will try it out this week end with my bike rack 103170

The hitch went on without a problem. It took me only 20 minutes to install. The directions are quite clear (all you need them for is to see which bolts/washers/nuts to use where. I am super happy with it so far. I have used it for a Swagman XTC 2 bike carrier. 37275

Ordered a trailer hitch on Thursday and it was delivered on Tuesday as promised. Hitch was easy to install and seems very sturdy. I just ordered a bike rack from etrailer to go with it. I was really impressed with the follow through from etrailer. 390725

The install was very easy for this trailer hitch and it tucks up under the car well. I was afraid it would hang down and look strange on the car but it is barely noticeable. The videos etrailer does along with the install kit were very helpful. 175422

Easy and quick to install. Was delivered scratch and damage free. Only problem was my hardware kit had 3 nuts of one size and 1 of the other so I had to buy another 3/8" nut from the hardware store in order to install it. 426723

Ask the Experts about this Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch
Do you have a question about this Trailer Hitch?

  • Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2013 Mazda 3 Hatchback
  • Typically we do not recommend using trunk mounted bike racks on vehicles that have spoilers. Most plastic and fiberglass spoilers cannot handle the weight of a bike rack and bikes and will bend or even break sooner or later. If the spoiler on your 2013 Mazda 3 hatchback is metal and part of the rear hatch, rather than a separate plastic or fiberglass spoiler, then you can use a trunk mounted bike rack without having to worry about the weight of the rack damaging the spoiler. You can...

  • Comparing Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, and Curt Trailer Hitches for a 2010 Mazda 3
  • You have done your research. As you have seen, all of the hitches for the 2010 Mazda 3 are Class I trailer hitches. The Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch models do have the safety notch in them that prevent the insertion of a Class II accessory. This is so you will not accidentally overload the hitch. The Curt hitch does not have this feature. This notch and the capacity are what makes a Class I hitch a Class I. As you have said neither the Draw-Tite nor Hidden Hitch models require the use...

  • Bike Rack and Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2012 Mazda 3i Touring Hatchback
  • You can install a trailer hitch with a 1-1/4 inch receiver on your 2012 Mazda 3i Touring Hatchback. The trailer hitch that I recommend for you would be the Draw-Tite Class I Trailer Hitch, # 24843. This hitch was designed for the hatchback models of the 2012 Mazda 3 and gives you the same weight capacities as the other hitch options at the most economical price. I have attached the installation instructions for you to check out. For a bike rack, I also recommend the Thule T2 Bike Rack,...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2013 MazdaSPEED 3
  • Yes indeed! Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24843 does fit the 2013 MazdaSPEED 3. If you plan on doing some towing you will also need the recommended ball mount and a ball. Use # 19256 for a 1-7/8 inch or # 19258 for a 2 inch. For trailer wiring, if the vehicle has the Grand Touring LED tail light package use # 119179KIT. If it does NOT have the Grand Touring LED tail light package use # 118420.

  • Trunk Mount Bike Rack Recommendation for a 2011 Mazda Speed 3
  • There is a bike rack solution for your vehicle, but currently, there are no trailer hitches available that will fit a 2011 Mazdaspeed 3. Instead you can use a trunk mounted bike rack. For a 2 bike rack I recommend the Thule Passage, # TH910XT. For a 3 bike rack, I would go with the Thule Gateway 3, # TH9007XT. With either rack you get anti-sway cradles, a bike rack that weighs under 20 pounds, and is among the easiest installation of any trunk mount bike rack. I have included links...

  • Do I Need To Use Support Strap To Carry Bike Rack w/ Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 24843 on 2011 Mazda 3
  • CURT is the only hitch manufacturer that requires that you use a support strap like the CURT Bike Rack Strap, part # 18050, when carrying a bike rack using their hitch. The Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 24843, would be a great option for a hitch on your 2011 Mazda 3 w/o LED tail lights. All of the hitches we carry are of quality, including Draw-Tite. They even share the same instructions which I have linked for you. The recommended ball mount for this hitch is # 3594 and you can use 1-7/8 inch ball # 19256 or 2 inch ball # 19258. • Trailer Hitch and Wiring for a 2010 Mazda 3 Hatchback without LED Tail Lights
  • Trailer hitches are designed to fit specific places on a vehicle and cannot be altered in any way because you would not be able to install the hitch and it would void the hitch warranty. To do what you want to do would require a complete custom installation and a hitch fabricated for this application by a qualified professional. If you would rather just go with a regular custom fit hitch then # 24843 is a great option for your 2010 Mazda 3 hatchback. I have included a link to a video...

It will also fit sedan models with or without LED tail lights. Both of the hitches mentioned are Class I trailer hitches with 1-1/4 inch receivers. • On both the Hidden Hitch 60258 (discontinued) and the Draw-Tite, # 24843, the top of the receiver tube will be approximately 1 inch below the bottom of the rear fascia. The bottom of the receiver will then be another 1-3/4 inches below that. Measure from that point to the ground to get the ground clearance. This means that the most bikes you can carry on a hitch is 2 even if the bike rack can hold more.
