Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

Video Transcript for Trailer Hitch Installation - 2013 Mazda 3 - Draw-Tite

Today in our 2013 Mazda 3 we'll be installing a Draw-Tite hitch part number 24843. This is what our hitch should look like once it's installed. Next we'll give you a couple measurements to assist you with selecting accessories for your new hitch. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outer most edge of the bumper is five inches. From the top of the receiver to the opening to the ground is eleven inches. This will assist you selecting accessories such as a ball mount bike rack or cargo carrier. Now we'll go ahead with installation.

First we'll go ahead and point out the attachment points. Each one of these attachment points is pre-drilled holes into the vehicle by the manufacturer. There are a total of four attachment points. Two on each side. Our frame rail attachment points will be a 7/16th carriage bolt and block that will use the 7/16th bolt leader to put into position.

Then we'll secure the hitch using the 7/16th flat washer, split lock washer, and nut. We'll need to put these in position before we put the hitch into place. Taking the pole wire we'll go through the attachment point and out the access hole. We'll slide on the block and thread on the carriage bolt. Then we'll go ahead and pull the block and carriage bolt into position leaving the pole wire on as it will assist us to get the hitch up into place without pushing our hardware back up into the frame. Note, each process we're going to do on one side will get repeated identically on the opposite side. Now with both carriage bolts in place we're ready to go ahead and install the hitch.

It's a good idea to get a extra set of hands to help you hold the hitch while you install the fasteners. We'll raise the hitch up into position, pulling the carriage bolt down through the hitch. Then we can go ahead and remove the bolt leader. Install the flat washer, split lock washer, and nut. We'll install each one of our fasteners finger-tight until we have them all in place. Now, with both carriage bolts secured, we'll need to install the toe-hook fasteners. Our 3/8ths bolt and flat washer will go through the hitch and then the toe bracket.

We'll secure this hardware with a 3/8ths conical tooth washer, the teeth of the washer facing the hitch and a 3/8ths nut. Now with all our hardware in place, we can go ahead and tighten it down. Next we'll torque to specifications as indicated in the instructions. And now with our hitch secured and torqued to specifications. We're ready to hit the road and that completes our install of the Draw-Tite hitch part number 24843 on our 2013 Mazda 3. .

This is my first time installing a hitch. Pros: easy to install in IN THEORY and it doesn’t protrude from the car. Perfect fit for my 2013 Mazda. All hardwear included. Fast shipping. Cons: packaging was damaged and the hitch had paint scraped off in a few spots. The plate welded over the hitch receiver is off-center. My biggest frustration is this required a deep well socket wrench and it isn’t easy to tighten without a power drill as the wrench handle I have is too long to properly fit under the car where it needed to. Took me two hours due to the back and forth on the socket sizes and difficult angles I had to work with. I also didn’t have a way to jack the car up so this increases the difficulty, too. Doing it myself was very tricky to keep the hitch flush up against the car frame when putting the bottom bolts in. A can of beans wasn’t tall enough! Needed a brick or something. Was it worth saving $100 vs. the trailer rental place's quote for the hassle of doing it myself? I’m undecided. 512437

Installed this on my 2012 mazdaspeed 3. Clears aftermarket 4 inch exhaust tips. Car is even lowered an inch with aftermarket springs. The hitch is the only visible part from the rear. Never scrapped the ground. Tow my dirt bike and stand up jet skit behind it. Love it. I rarely tow with it, but when I need to it works just fine for the few times a year I tow. Once you install this hitch you pretty much never want to remove it. 487848

Great hitch. Shipped out next day, arrived in 2-3 days, install was straight forward. Make sure you have a deep socket (11/16") because the vertical bolt by the muffler was too tight to get a wrench at. Otherwise, installation was straight-forward and exactly as advertised on the website and video. I would highly recommend this hitch. 225337

The product is excellent. Worked/fitted perfectly on my Mazda 3 Hatchback 2011. Couple of things though: • While I understand the efficiencies of buying in bulk one size of boxes, the shipping box was 75% air. WAY too big for the product. Still, product arrived with no damage, and was EXPERTLY packed. • If you are installing by yourself, having your vehicle on a lift, or being a yoga master are hugely helpful! Honestly, get yourself a friend to help out. Makes it MUCH easier. • ONCE I understood HOW to use the pull wires, things were much easier. But no where on the instructions did it show or explain how to use them. Besides that, it would also be helpful to append to the instructions a suggested tool list to have on hand before starting. These things aside, I'm really happy with my hitch, it's SOLID, perfectly matched to my car, and out of the way when not in use. Very happy with my purchase and will recommend to my friends in the future. Thanks! 16177

Ordered a trailer hitch on Thursday and it was delivered on Tuesday as promised. Hitch was easy to install and seems very sturdy. I just ordered a bike rack from etrailer to go with it. I was really impressed with the follow through from etrailer. 390725

Owned for over a year. Installed on mazdaspeed 3. Consistently haul sailboat, utility trailer and bike racks. Held up great and has even taken a few blows from dips in the road. I would recommend it. 603954

Perfect Fitment. Easy install. Great price. For my rack, I had to order the 6" extension because when I have two bikes, the first bike is too close to the car. But it is not necessary if you're careful. (Btw, not promoting the dealer, just haven't taken the plate frame out.) 332985

Thanks for your review and your business. I am glad you brought up the extension for clearance! Just keep in mind that by using an extension, you are reducing your hitch capacity by fifty percent. Happy biking!

The hitch is pretty much what I was looking for. We're only using it to mount a carrier to haul two bicycles around with no intention of asking it to any more than that. In that regard the hitch receiver is exactly what we wanted. I think it could have been boxed better as the hitch had punched thru the box in a couple of places and the box was way too big for the product so it bounced around during shipping, I suspect. The interesting part was that the instructions that came with the hitch were for a Chevy Impala! The instructions and drawings had nothing to do with mounting the hitch to a Mazda 3 but the good thing is that etrailer has excellent photos showing how the hitch is attached to the car and I used those. I was working at night with a single flashlight but it only took me about 20-25 minutes to get everything where it's supposed to go! It fit perfectly to the car and is rock solid. The bike rack tends to wobble a bit but with it secured in place we know it's not going to go anywhere while on the road. I've included a picture of the whole setup with bikes. The main thing is that I'm quite pleased with how it all turned out. We got what we wanted and installation was simple. When we get another car we will order another receiver hitch from etrailer. 120137

Comments

Still using it! Nothings come loose and Id still recommend it. The only issue I have with the hitch is that the two looped bars I guess to attach a chain from a towed trailer can get in the way when I or remove a cotter pin for the bike rack. But I can work around that and get the job done. I thought about cutting them off but when we eventually sell the car the next owner might want that feature.

It took me longer to gather my tools than install this hitch. Took me less than 10 minutes. I didn't even need the wire to fish the bolts through the frame on my Mazda3. With the rectangular washer attached, I held on to the washer and was able to put the bolt in the right spot easily. My only complaint is that the hitch arrived with several spots where the paint was rubbed off and showing bare metal. It would be so easy for etrailer to take a few seconds to look over the hitch before throwing it in a box and shipping it out. I had to wait another week for a can of touchup paint. That's the only reason I knocked down the rating from excellent. 67032

Took me about an hour to install. had to run to Lowes and grab a deeper 11/16ths socket. Other than that a piece of cake! 231050

Thanks for reaching out. Thing has worked great for me. The car is pretty low so sometimes it scrapes going in or out of bad driveways, and I should probably get under there and tighten it up, but yeah, super satisfied with the purchase.

Got this hitch to carry bikes behind my Mazda3 i HB. VERY straightforward install if you read the instructions and the reviews here. A second set of hands would've been nice but I shimmed up one side of the hitch on 2x4s. The bolts have to be long so you can put the thing together which means your 11/16 socket has to be really deep. Really. And I was unable to get my torque wrench in to service the horizontal bolts. All in all, it looks good and I've already carried the bicycle! 124912

At this point I am not happy with this hitch. Claims to have a 200 pound tongue load but I can actually see and measure deflection of the reciever when placed under only a 120 pound load. This measurement is compaired to the body and not the ground, etc. This is a real safety issue for me. I am currently having Etrailer contact Draw Tite to show validation of testing on this model (Mazda 3 2012 Hatchback). I question if it is actually a sub class 1 (ie tongue load rating of 125 lbs). I do not recomend this product until these safety concerns are answered. If the hitch is not torquing around the 1.25" draw bar then the frame connection points chosen by draw tite are sub standard location points. 64974

Comments

I hope that I do not have to follow behind your trailer. The hitch is rated for up to 200 Lbs tongue weight but not your car.

Product arrived in excellent condition. Very easy installation with the right tools. Fit perfectly on my 2013 Mazda speed 3. The only reason it's not a 5 star review is because one of the lock washer that came with it for installation was not the correct size. Luckily we had one lying around that was the correct size. So make sure to double check your bolts and washers before you start installation. 611468

Review for purchase and install: Nice customer service for ordering. I didn't get a response for a question regarding a return/exchange, however that information is freely available on the website, so I found it. The install was very easy with the video from the website. I needed a quick run to the hardware store for a longer ratchet extension than was in my standard kit and a deep 11/16" socket (the bolt comes through pretty far). Total add $14 and I'll get to use them later. Shipping makes sense for a large package. I haven't towed, yet, so I'll look check back later. 487421

Trailer hitch fit perfectly and was easy to install. Instructional video on the website was very easy to follow. The only problem was that there were 3 11/16" nuts and only 1 9/16" nut, instead of 2 of each as there was supposed to be. This was a bit of a hassle as I then had to find an additional nut to complete the install. 430209

I am incredibly impressed with etrailer.com! I placed the order on a Sunday and received it on Tuesday. The hitch installed easily and the bike rack I ordered with it was just as good. Very little new to add to the reviews here: Ordering process and shipping speed were excellent. The hitch did bounce around a bit in the box, and one of the vertical bits was slightly bent instead of being straight. Rather than return it, I simply held the crossbar straight up with the vertical bits off the edge of the curb, and applied slight downward pressure to bend the vertical side bar back straight. The slight damage is why I gave four stars instead of five, since I had to do a tiny bit of metal-bending to make the holes for the vertical bolts line up. Installation was very easy, especially thanks to the excellent video on etrailer.com. I think it took only slightly longer to get everything finger tight than to watch the video! The pull wires are amazing, but you won't quite know what to do with them unless you watch the video. Like many others have noted, there was a run to the hardware store for a deep enough socket to get everything tightened up. Now I just need to figure out who is selling the Thule T2 Pro XT at a discount! 403350

What sets etrailer apart is their installation videos on Youtube. I discovered etrailer when doing a search for a hitch for my 2012 Sienna van 4 years ago. It showed it was a very easy install and it was! This time around on my Mazda, the installation video showed it was a bolt on also. I checked the prices locally to get the hitch installed and it was over twice the cost of the hitch from etrailer. I ordered my hitch which arrived very quickly and well packaged. The included instructions were clear. I reviewed the video again and the install when very well. I managed to over torque a bolt and sent a question to George and he responded on a Sunday! • Will 2-Bike Platform Rack Work With Class l Hitch On 2011 Mazda 3
  • The Draw-Tite # 24843 trailer hitch is a confirmed fit for your 2011 Mazda 3. This is a Class l trailer hitch and it has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. One thing to be concerned with when using any hitch accessory with a trailer hitch is the clearance at the back of your vehicle. For the Draw-Tite hitch, the distance form the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of the rear bumper is 5-1/2 inches.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver For 2010 Mazda 3
  • There are specific fits for a 2010 Mazda 3 for the hatchback vs. the sedan. If you have a sedan, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24842. If you have a hatchback, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24843. If you will be using this hitch for light towing, I recommend the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118420 if you DO NOT...

  • Bike Rack Recommendation for 2010 Mazda 3 Carrying Carbon Frame Bike
  • For a carbon frame bike a hitch bike rack that holds the bike by just the tires is the only safe option. Trunk racks all touch the frame which is something you need to avoid with carbon frame bikes. So for a hitch you'd need the Draw Tite # 24843 for if you have a hatchback or # 24842 for if you have a sedan. The Draw Tite hitches are the way to go over the Curt ones as they do not require a stabilizer strap with a bike rack. For a bike rack I really like the Saris Freedom Superclamp...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver For Mazda 3 Hatchback
  • We do have trailer hitch receivers compatible with the Mazda 3 hatchback. For 2014-2017, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class I - 1-1/4" # 24914. For 2010-2013, I recommend # 24843. For 2004-2009, I recommend # 24816. If you want wiring or ball mount recommendations, let me know the year of your vehicle for a confirmed fit.

  • Bike Rack Recomemndation for 2012 Mazda 3 with Draw Tite Trailer Hitch Installed
  • When we installed the Draw Tite hitch part # 24843 on a similar 2012 Mazda 3 as yours we found that from the center of the hitch pin hole out to the furthest point out on the rear bumper measures 5 inches. That's a very easy clearance figure to fit a bike rack with since most racks have around 10 inches from the pin hole to the upright mast of the bike rack. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed to fit this vehicle is the Thule Roadway 2 part # TH912XTR. We asked...

  • Comparing Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, and Curt Trailer Hitches for a 2010 Mazda 3
  • You have done your research. As you have seen, all of the hitches for the 2010 Mazda 3 are Class I trailer hitches. The Draw-Tite and Hidden Hitch models do have the safety notch in them that prevent the insertion of a Class II accessory. This is so you will not accidentally overload the hitch. The Curt hitch does not have this feature. This notch and the capacity are what makes a Class I hitch a Class I. As you have said neither the Draw-Tite nor Hidden Hitch models require the use...

  • Bike Rack and Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2012 Mazda 3i Touring Hatchback
  • You can install a trailer hitch with a 1-1/4 inch receiver on your 2012 Mazda 3i Touring Hatchback. The trailer hitch that I recommend for you would be the Draw-Tite Class I Trailer Hitch, # 24843. This hitch was designed for the hatchback models of the 2012 Mazda 3 and gives you the same weight capacities as the other hitch options at the most economical price. I have attached the installation instructions for you to check out. For a bike rack, I also recommend the Thule T2 Bike Rack,...

  • Yes indeed! Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24843 does fit the 2013 MazdaSPEED 3. If you plan on doing some towing you will also need the recommended ball mount and a ball. Use # 19256 for a 1-7/8 inch or # 19258 for a 2 inch. For trailer wiring, if the vehicle has the Grand Touring LED tail light package use # 119179KIT. If it does NOT have the Grand Touring LED tail light package use # 118420.

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for Towing Small Pop-Up Camper With 2012 Mazda 3
  • I'd recommend the Draw-Tite Hitch Class I Trailer Hitch, part #24843 for your Mazda 3. The hitch includes the hitch pin, but you'll need the ball mount and correctly sized trailer ball. For a 1-7/8 inch ball, use part # 19256 or # 19258 for a 2 inch ball. You'll also need a taillight wiring harness. If your Mazda 3 has the LED taillights, you'd use the # 119179KIT wiring harness. If you have the incandescent taillights, use the # 118420. I've linked to some installation videos you...

  • Bike Rack Recommendations for a 2011 Mazda 3 Hatchback with Rear Spoiler
  • There are options that will allow you to carry bikes on your 2011 Mazda 3 Hatchback, however, trunk mounted bike racks are not recommended on models that have a spoiler. To mount a trunk mounted bike rack on your vehicle, the upper straps will have to run over the spoiler and hook to the top edge of your rear hatch. The spoiler on the Mazda 3 Hatchback was not designed to support any weight and could deform or even break under the weight of a bike rack and bikes. Instead, I recommend...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2011 Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback for Use with a Bike Rack
  • I will be happy to make some hitch recommendations for your 2011 Mazda 3 Sport hatchback. I recommend Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24843. The reason I recommend it over the Curt option is because with Curt you would have to use stabilization strap # 18050 when using the hitch with your bike rack per the Curt warranty requirements. Draw-Tite does not have that requirement. While there are 1-1/4 to 2 inch adapters that would work there are a couple of problems. First, the use of an adapter...

The Hidden Hitch, part # 60259 is made by the same company as the Draw-Tite and they are essentially the same in design and fit. The distance with the Curt Hitch, part # C11383 is 3-3/4 inches. You would need a bike carrier that has a little more than those dimensions from the center of the shank hitch pin hole to the closest part of the carrier when it is...

  • Would Saris Freedom Superclamp Fit a 2012 Mazda 3 Hatchback with Draw Tite Hitch Installed
  • Yes, the Saris Freedom SuperClamp part # SA4025F that you are interested in would fit and work well in the Draw Tite Hitch part # 24843 that you installed on your 2012 Mazda 3 hatchback. The rack would have the clearance needed to fit past your bumper and the rack is very lightweight at 30 lbs so it would be a great option.

  • Can Trailer Hitch Hardware be Greased to Resist Corrosion for a 2012 Mazda 3 Hatchback
  • The Draw-Tite trailer hitch, # 24843, uses lock washers and conical tooth washers that prevent the nuts from backing out. I would say that the use of grease is not prohibited by the instructions (see link) but that there are some other options. You can use blue Loctite, # LT37643. The blue version will allow the hardware to be removed (if ever needed) but will also protect the hardware from corrosion. The problem with grease is that it can cause other particles of dirt and things...

  • Where to Install Curt Stabilization Strap 18050 on a 2012 Mazda 3 Hatchback for a Cargo Carrier
  • Curt does not specify where the stabilization strap, # 18050, has to be connected to the vehicle, just that it should be. If there happens to be a gap between the spoiler and body of the car that the hook could fit through then you would attach it to the seam between the hatch and the roof. There are other trailer hitch options that do not require the use of the stabilization strap. I reocmmend the Draw-Tite trailer hitch # 24843. It costs less than the Curt, has the same capacity,...

To do what you want to do would require a complete custom installation and a hitch fabricated for this application by a qualified professional. • How to Carry 4 Bikes on a 2017 Mazda 3 Hatchback
  • There are a couple of things you should know. The most important is that all of the trailer hitches for the 2017 Mazda 3 hatchback are Class I hitches. This means that the most bikes you can carry on a hitch is 2 even if the bike rack can hold more. It isn't a weight issue but rather how far the weight will be from the receiver if a third or more bikes is added. In order to carry 4 bikes I recommend a combination of a trunk mount bike rack and a roof rack. Using the Hollywood Racks Over-the-Top...

It will also fit sedan models with or without LED tail lights. Both of the hitches mentioned are Class I trailer hitches with 1-1/4 inch receivers. • Does a Stabilization Strap Have to be Used with Curt Trailer Hitch 11383 on a 2011 Mazda 3 5-Door
  • If there is no where to attach the stabilization strap # 18050 for use with the Curt hitch # 11383 on your 2011 Mazda 3, 5-Door then you may be interested in a different hitch like # 24843 from Draw-Tite. It does not require a strap. The Draw-Tite trailer hitch will fit models with or without LED tail lights but will not fit MazdaSpeed models. The other option is to try to hook the strap off to the side of the rear hatch rather than right at the top so you avoid the spoiler.

With the Curt hitch and any non-trailer load, such as a bike rack, Curt requires the use of a stabilization strap, # 18050. The strap reduces some of the stress on the hitch.

  • CURT is the only hitch manufacturer that requires that you use a support strap like the CURT Bike Rack Strap, part # 18050, when carrying a bike rack using their hitch. The Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 24843, would be a great option for a hitch on your 2011 Mazda 3 w/o LED tail lights. All of the hitches we carry are of quality, including Draw-Tite.
