Video Transcript for Curt Trailer Hitch Installation - 2018 Ford Transit T250

Today on our 2018 Ford Transit T250 you're going to be taking a look at, and I'm going to show you how to install the Curt Class III trailer hitch receiver. This is what our hitch looks like when it's installed. As you can see, the cross tube is visible. However, it's up close enough to the bottom of the bumper, that it's not going to take away from the vehicle. It makes it nice for a work van. It's going to be a Class III hitch.

It's going to be two inch by two inch. It's going to have a nice reinforced collar to give us a little extra stability on your receiver tube.Hitch pin hole's going to be 5/8 inch in diameter. Now the hitch pin and clip does not come with a cinch. However, it can be found here at etrailer.com. We're going to have a plate style safety chain loops, give us plenty of room for different size hooks.

We're going to have a 900 pound max tongue weight, which is the downward pressure on the inside of the receiver tube. And a 6,000 pound max trailer weight, which is the trailer plus the load included, and that's how much the hitch can pull. You can use weight distribution with this. Tongue weight's going to stay the same. However, the trailer weight's going to go up to 8,000 pounds. I always recommend checking the owner's manual of your Ford to make sure the vehicle can withstand that amount of weight.

You're going to pick the lowest number between the vehicle and the hitch. Now let's give you a few measurements to help you when deciding on any hitch mounted accessories you may need, such as a bike rack, ball mount, or cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost part of the bumper, it's going to be about 3-1/2 inches. From the ground to the top innermost part of the receiver tube, is about 14-1/2 inches. Now let's show you how to get this installed. For our installation, on each frame rail, we're going to be using this hole, this hole, and this hole back here.

These two holes, you're going to have self tapping bolts that come in your kit, but we're going to have to clean these out first. So we're going to take some lubricant, we're going to spray it in the hole. We'll use a pipe brush, want to make sure that nothing's going to get on those threads when we thread those bolts in there. We're going to do that same thing to the other one.Next, we're going to take carriage bolt, spacer block, pull wire. Put your pull wire spring into your pull wire through, we're going to come out the back here. Go ahead and thread on your carriage bolt and spacer block onto your pull wire, feed it into the hole. We're going to do that same thing on the other frame rail. We're going to take our self tapping bolt, 17 millimeter socket, we're going to go straight up through these two holes in this side, or this frame rail, and then the same two holes on the other frame rail. You want to make sure that you try to keep this bolt as straight as possible. You're going to do that same thing with the other three holes. Now with an extra set of hands, put our pull wires into the corresponding holes in the hitch. Lift it up into place. We'll remove our pull wire. We're going to add on a flange nut. We're going to put this on both sides to hold our hitch in place while we install our remaining hardware. Then we're going to reinstall our self tapping bolts, 17 millimeter socket. Then we're going to torque all of our hardware to the specifications in the instructions. That'll do it for a look at, and installation on the Curt Class III trailer hitch receiver on our 2018 Ford Transit T250.

Installed it myself. Had some trouble getting self taping bolts started. Might be me. I am 79 maybe 40 or 50 years ago I would not had to use method shown in attached photo. I have installed several of these trailer hitches and several base plats over the years. 588522

Comments
Using a bottle jack to exert upward pressure on the bolts is a great idea, but the easiest way to go would be to use an M12x1.75 thread tap to chase the sleeves before installing the hitch bolts.

2016 Ford Transit Connect

Just wanted to let you know that I am a 70 year old man and I had no problem installing the extremely well-made trailer hitch I purchased from you. I wanted to use it on my way 2016 Ford Transit van. It was a very simple installation except the self tapping bolts we're a little difficult to get started, I ended up using my electric drill to get them spinning fast enough to grab ahold. Once that was accomplished it took no time to install. I would recommend your company to anybody!! 528282

2015 Ford Transit Connect

This is the second trailer hitch I've purchased from etrailer. I bought one last year for my wife's Honda CR-V which we just sold, and purchased a 2015 Ford Transit Wagon in it's place. We use these hitches exclusively with a Thule Bike Rack / Hauler. This hitch arrived on time as scheduled. I could not be happier. When I opened the box, it was perfect! It was also protected well with plastic and cardboard. I red all the reviews, most of the people whining about not being able to get the M12 bolts threaded... Well, I got all of them threaded, by myself... Yes, it takes a bit if pressure on the ratchet as you turn the bolt. But, I found out the trick is to clean with a brush and a lubricant first. Lay on your back if you don't have the vehicle on a lift, place an 11/16 socket on the bolt head and apply as much pressure on it as you can muster. While doing so, "turn the bolt a fraction at a time... small bites while keeping the pressure on. If you try to crank it in quick, it will not grab. Take your time. I was able to get them all threaded in about 20 minutes. I also found out some else. Once you get on done. THAT BOLTS threads are marred at the tip. Just use the same bolt in the next hole, it goes right in and threads almost like it's been tapped! Don' run the bolt all the way up. Go in just enough to make a couple threads and back it out. Now, get a virgin bolt, and run it in to make the threads. Next, use THAT bolt to make t threads in the next hole removing it after a few threads. Then, take a virgin bolt (#3 of 4) and run it all the way up and back out again. Do the same with the remaining Hole. USE LUBRICANT ON THE BOLT as you run it up to make the threads. The hitch weighs 31 lbs. I was doing this alone, so just placed the hitch on a small plastic bucket about where it needed to go. I then rocked (the muffler side) up into place and started the (rearmost to the bumper) M12 so it would stay in place. I went to the left side and did the same thing. I then inserted the other M12's and ran them almost all the way in leaving space for the hitch to move. I then did the other two remaining bolts with nuts using the fishwire they give you. It could not have been easier!!! I torqued everything down and was done. Took me less than 15 minutes. Of course, remember, everything was all set to go with threaded holes. The only thing that would have made this easier would be to tap the holes with the proper threads with a Tap. I didn't have one, so thought I'd try the self-tapping bolts to see if I could do it. Done deal! Thank you again etrailer! I'll be buying more stuff from you soon as I need kayak crossbars and an Hullavator. Good luck everybody with your install. It just took some muscle. DON"T use an impact wrench (as they say here) - Since the threads are not actually "CUT" into the frame rail, the bolts are a bit marred. As I was torquing them, I could feel one of them start to go soft before my torque wrench clicked. I quit at that point know ing that any more torque and it was about to strip. It's plenty tight as it is, and I'm only using the hitch as a bike rack.... 541263

As always quick and responsive order processing. Received my hitch and wiring harness in 4 days. Install of the hitch is simple, it took less than 10 minutes with the proper tools. (Impact is a must). Wiring harness connectors were a little off, easily corrected by shaving off the right side fin. If you want keep the wiring inside the van, remove the rear step trim and the driver side rear panel you can find power back there and save yourself running it all the way to the battery. 371722

“Self tapping bolts “ are soft and destroyed in the process. Had to re-tap them to clean out threads. Ended up stripping the female receiving end into the lower carriage frame. Will have to find replacement hardware elsewhere. “15 minute job” will not go beyond half a day. 609412

Great looking heavy duty hitch. Haven’t installed yet, but don’t foresee any problems as all the hardware with instructions came with the hitch. Watched the video of one installed on van just like mine. I feel that a bought a good quality product from a good company at a great price. I recommend this hitch and the company I bought it from. 606551

The rear bolts would not thread into the frame, I had to drill and tap the 4 bolts then the installation went fast. The front bolt on the passenger's side is blocked by the tail pipe so you can not use a socket on the bolt. It took about 2 hours to install. The trailer hitch looks great and works fine. 598586

The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75912 and the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C13193 are similar trailer hitches as they are both Class III with a 2 inch receiver opening (Draw-Tite is a manufacturer name). For your towing application I recommend going with the Curt option since it has a 900 lb Tongue Weight (TW) rating and a 6,000 lb Gross Trailer Weight (GTW) rating. This is higher than the 750 lb TW and 5,000 lb GTW rating on the Draw-Tite option. Even though you...

For your 2016 Ford Transit T250 I recommend Curt trailer hitch # C13193. This is a Class III trailer hitch rated for 6,000 pounds gross trailer weight. When using weight distribution it is rated for 8,000 pounds gross trailer weight. I have linked a video showing an example installation for you. To add a 4-Way flat trailer connector at the back of the van I recommend wiring harness # 118643. I have included a link to a video showing an installation of the wiring as well. If you plan...

  • Curt Hitch Recommendation for a 2015 Ford Transit
The correct hitch for a 2015 Ford Transit Connect is the part # C13167, the part # C13193 that you referenced is designed to the 2015 Fort Transit T150, T250, and T350. It sounds like you may have ordered the wrong hitch for the vehicle you have.

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Harness for 2017 Ford Transit T150 Cargo Van
You came to the right place! We have trailer hitches for your 2017 Ford Transit T150 cargo van (so long as it is NOT a cab-and-chassis or Cutaway version). All of these are 2-inch hitches but their capacities vary; all can be seen on the linked page. Curt # C13193 and Draw-Tite # 75912 Class III models are no-drill installs, but the Class IV Curt # C14012 does require drilling. All three hitches include all the required mounting hardware and detailed written instructions. For value,...

  • Comparing Draw-Tite and Curt Trailer Hitches on 2018 Ford Transit T250
Between the Curt # C13193 trailer hitch and Draw-Tite # 75912 trailer hitch that fit your 2018 Ford Transit T250 the biggest differences are the tongue weight and towing capacities of each hitch. The Curt hitch is rated for 900 lbs of tongue weight and 6,000 lbs of towing capacity compared to the 750 lbs of tongue weight and 5,000 lbs of towing capacity for the Draw-Tite hitch, which is why I recommend the Curt # C13193 hitch for your '18 T250. The hitches have a very similar installation...

  • Differences in Towing Capacities for Curt Hitches for 2016 Ford Transit T350
Both the Curt hitches you mentioned are a confirmed fit for your 2016 Ford Transit T350. The capacities are interesting but the Class IV # C14012 does have higher trailer towing capacities at 8,000 lbs vs. the Class III # C13193 which has a 6,000 lb capacity. You are correct though that the tongue weight capacity of the III is higher at 900 lbs vs. the IV which has a 800 lb capacity. The hitches have very different constructions which would be why they have different capacities. They...

  • Trailer Hitch and Trailer Wiring Harness Recommendations for 2015 Ford Transit T-150 Van
Curt offers a Class III or IV hitch for your Fort Transit T-150 van. The Class III, part # C13193 has a 6000 lb towing/900 lb tongue weight capacity. The Class IV, part # C14012 has a 10,000 lb towing/1000 lb tongue weight capacity. You'll be limited by the capacity of the vehicle, if its lower than the capacity of the hitch. The Curt # C13167 is a fit for the Transit Connect, and won't fit the full size Transit. For wiring, I'd recommend the # 118643 to provide a 4-pole trailer connector....

  • Can Hollywood Racks Bike Rack/Cargo Carrier be Used to Carry a Scooter on a 2017 Ford Transit
Since the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE2 has only been tested and rated for use with the Hollywood Racks Cargo Carrier you can really combine anything else together outside of those 2 components with the part # HR1450Z-85 that you referenced. When used together the weight rating for the carrier is only 90 lbs. The other thing to note is that the whole unit weighs in at about 110 lbs and a brand new Yamaha SMAX weighs in at 328 lbs when it is ready to go. This means that you will have...
