Hey, guys. it's Jake here with etrailer. Today I'm gonna show you how to put a new ball on your weight distribution head. Now, to explain a little bit about why you would need to go through this process. First thing is, if you're just like our situation and you need to put a ball on your kit that did not come with one, that's the reason you'd have to do it. If you take a look at this one here, you can see some marring on the ball itself.
And as time goes on, that is only going to get worse, because you'll have little pockets where dirt and debris can hang out in rocks, and stuff like that. They'll get trapped in there, and then when you go to put your trailer down on it and you drive for a couple hundred miles, it's gonna keep grinding that down. And then what was a two and five 16ths ball is no longer two and five 16ths. That's gonna cause more wear on the ball, more wear on the coupler, and just more wear in general. So having a nice, clean setup is definitely gonna help you get down the road safely.
Now, another reason you'd go through this process is if you had a camper that, or a trailer, that had a two inch ball on your weight distribution, and you're upgrading to a two and five 16ths. That's gonna be another reason why you would want to go through this process to swap out this ball. We've got our two and five 16ths ball that we're taking a look at today. We've actually got a new Reese weight distribution head here. And essentially, to start the process, you'll need to do one of two things.
You'll either need to put your ball in a vice, like we have here. There's two flat sides on the edge of the ball. You can obviously see we have it flipped over here. You'll want this upside down if you have a vice that's this heavy. Now, the torque setting for this is going to depend on the size of the shank.
Ours is an inch and a quarter shank. You wanna make sure that that matches the hole in your weight distribution. But you wanna match the torque specs for the size shank that you have. Usually, when you get the ball in your package, it'll say what to torque it down to. So since we're putting it on this, we're gonna take our head, flip it over, and set it on there just like that. Now we'll take the lock washer, slide it over, followed by the nut. We'll thread this down all the way by hand till it's tight. Now, no matter what size shank that you're gonna have on the ball, you're gonna have, it's gonna be a pretty high torque setting. So you'll need to either rent a torque wrench. We've got this four foot torque wrench. It comes in handy when we're doing this kind of stuff, but maybe check with a local shop. They may be able to torque it down for you if you get it assembled. Or you can typically rent one about this size from your local auto parts store. So now we'll just need to take our wrench, and torque it down. Now, what we ended up having to do is, we've got a large socket here, and we're using a inch and 13/16 socket. That's what you'll need to fit over that nut. We're using an extension, because the head of our torque wrench is not able to fit in here. When you're using an extension to do this, you wanna make sure that it is going to be an impact, because otherwise, if you use a chrome extension, it's going to twist. But this should not twist. And we'll get it tightened down. With your ball torque down properly onto your weight distribution, that's gonna do it for the installation.

Kimberly was extremely helpful and knowledgeable about the product I was interested in purchasing. She patiently answered all of my questions and followed to let me know my item had shipped. Actually came 2 days earlier than expected b/c I making preparations for a race which helped tremendously!!!
Always a great place. And fast response. Thank you
Excellent advise for proper product. Needed to clear my tailgate away from trailer jack so solution was offered to extend ball mount back 3 1/2”. Perfect solution.
The ball is what it is. Easy installati on
Work great was as described
Perfect. Meets expectations
Exactly what I was looking for and at a great price
Great items and fast shipping would buy from again.
Customer service is awful but product seems good.
Seems like a good product. Only aggravation was not being able to find a 1 7/8" socket or a torque wrench that went to 450lb. to mount it. Luckily my trailer dealer mounted it for me, though probably with an impact wrench.
Exactly what I needed and exactly the right price
I purchase a used trailer recently and have made several purchases from etrailer to include a Straight-Line Weight Distribution Hitch (RP 66084), 2 5/16 Ball (19286), RV Generator Plug (CAM 55333), Aqua Hose, sealing trim for roof and side seams etc...
All of the products have arrived on time and are of high quality. The trunnion bar holes on the RP 66084 were missed drilled so I called etrailer(Laser) and he shipped me out replacement bars which arrived sooner than expected along with a return label for the miss-drilled bars.
Products are quality, service is quality and inventory is exceptional.
It is a pleasure doing business with them.
What awesome timing ! I was just looking up where I can post a review and here we are. I can't say enough how very very pleased my husband and I are. Great quality fast delivery i can't say enough. Thank you we will be ordering again from you !
My F150 had an OEM 4 pin trailer plug and hitch.
The 118242 - 7 pin connector with wiring harness is the ticket. The hardest part of the install was dropping the spare tire. The plugs connect directly to the factory plugs and the harness length is the correct length.
The 3035-P brake controller connector harness was just as easy. Plugs right in to the OEM plug next to the ECM connector and the other end into the brake controller.
The PK12711U-26 - 7 pin bracket and hardware kit fastens directly the OEM bracket that is on the hitch. My truck had an OEM 4 pin trailer towing set up with the hitch. The OEM hitch had the bracket welded on it to attach the 7 pin mounting bracket to it.
These kits make this install very easy and professional looking.
If I have one complaint, the hardware kit to attach the 7 pin connector bracket is set up to fasten the bracket directly to the bumper with 2 - self tapping screws provided in the kit. The kit also includes 4 #12 machine screws with toothed washer nuts to attached the 7 pin connector to the bracket. This is fine if your truck hitch doesn't have an attaching bracket welded to it. The kit should included in it 6 #12 machine screws and nuts along with the 2 self tapping screws. Since my OEM hitch actually had a bracket welded to it to attach the 7 pin bracket to it, I had to use two other #12 screws and nuts to attach the 7 pin bracket to the OEM bracket on the hitch. Not a big deal, just a thought.
It took me about 2 hours, start to finish to install the 7 pin connector, trailer controller, and add the two relays in the OEM relay/fuse box under the hood.
I highly recommend these kits.
With this hitch I now feel safe towing my 6k lb, 26' travel trailer with my 1500 pickup truck. Just finished a 2200 mile trip. Also I like the fact the new hitch puts the trailer a little further behind the truck because I can open my tailgate fully when hitched. Like another fellow, I had to drill out the hole for the spring bar cover pin.
Great ball.. Super tough. Good luck finding an 1-7/8" socket and a huge torque wrench.

Still a great ball. No rust.
Does the job, got a little wear on the top of the ball right away which might have been due to me having skimped on the hitch grease but it's held up after a dozen plus outings. Still, maybe a bit more resilience might be nice. Not afraid to get another given the price though.
Going to cut the threads off and use as part of my security/lock system on my car trailer.

Fine, no issues.
The weight distribution hitch I purchased is outstanding. Quick shipping, easy to install, and excellent service and information at etrailer.com. Just used the hitch to go camping. What a difference it made in towing my camper. I also made several sharp turns both forward and in reverse with no problems. I highly recommend this product.
We use this trailer ball to pull our 20' cargo trailer. We moved from northern Arizona to western Kansas with the trailer. Seven trips overall, and no problems with the hitch. Holding up great!
I needed a weight distribution system that would allow me to safely tow my 8,000# boat and trailer. James was very helpful suggesting the best rig for my application: surge brake compatible, able to be backed up while connected, and properly sized given my tongue weight. I also needed the pole tongue adapter. I was amazed that the parts arrived just two days later! I have done a pre-install check and all will fit beautifully. etrailer and James did an outstanding job from selection to delivery!
Perfect fit for the ball mount I bought this for. Dimensions are accurate.
