Video Transcript for Review of Curt Trailer Hitch Ball - 2-5/16 Inch 30K Hitch Ball - C40085

Ellen: Hey, everyone. I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com, and we're going to be taking a quick look at the CURT hitch ball. This allows you to be able to connect to your trailer with a proper size ball and put it onto maybe, a new ball mount. And maybe you need it to drop, or something else. So, this is going to replace either, a worn out ball on your ball mount, or just allow you to make a new one to fit your trailer application. So let's make sure that this is the right fit for your particular ball mount. It's a two and 5/16-inch ball, so that should work with your two and 5/16th-inch coupler.

The shank diameter is one and a quarter inch, and then the length of the shank is listed at two and five eighths. Although, whenever we measure it here at etrailer, we always measure from the very bottom of the lip here, that would be resting on top of that ball platform to the very end of the shank. And if you measure like that, it actually measures about two and three quarters. So I'll show you that in just a minute, but I just want to let you know. For some reason, CURT lists it as two and five eighths. It's not a huge difference, but it is an eighth of an inch so, sometimes that can make all the difference.

As you can see, pretty much right at two and three quarters of an inch. But, it's listed at two and five eighths, so. Just want to let you know that it does come with the lock washer and nut. You want to make sure that you tighten that down to the torque specs that are supplied with the ball whenever you get this, to make sure that it's seated on there properly, and that you don't have any issues. It's made out of nice heat-treated steel with a raw machine finish, so there's kind of a texture to it that should give you a really nice heavy-duty look and feel over time. Shouldn't have any issues with corrosion, or anything like that.

The threads on our shank are nice and fine, so it should give a really tight grip to make sure that this doesn't go anywhere as you're towing. As far as the other specs, this should fit any kind of ball platform that's between three eighths of an inch to an inch thick. The overall height of the ball is right at five and three quarters of an inch tall.See it a little bit better there. The capacity that this can handle is 30,000 pounds. You want to be sure though, that you're going off of the lowest number between any component in your system.

That includes the ball platform, your hitch, the coupler, and anything else in between. And, also your towing vehicle that you're working with. So, always go off of the lowest number of any of your component. The nut on the end here requires a one and seven eighths-inch socket or wrench. This is covered by a one-year limited warranty. And, you want to make sure that the hole size on your ball mount is not any more than 1/16th of an inch larger in diameter than this threaded shank. So, this is one and a quarter. You want to make sure that you don't go over one and 5/16ths. There's a lot of ball platforms available, or ball mounts here at etrailer.com if you don't already have one, so you can find a lot of options. Hope this has been helpful in figuring out if this is the right ball mount for you, or the right hitch ball for you. Thanks for watching.

Ball is perfect. 3" hitch on the other hand is loose as a goose with about an .125 of play up and down and side to side. Quite disappointing but I wrapped it with tape.

I ordered the 30000 lb. ball hitch for a gooseneck on my 01 F250 super duty. It arrived at the time that e trailer said it would. I was able to choose the way the item was shipped which saved me money over other online options. I just put it in since it was a raw Steel ball I hit it with a coat of flat black enamel to keep the rusting to a minimum. It is installed and ready to pull. I don't have a gooseneck trailer but now if I need to pull a rental or a friends I can. I like doing business with places directly like e trailer and cutting out the big box places that are not easy to communicate with if there is a problem. There wasn't any which is even better.

So the customer service is fantastic. I ordered the BWX2000 and it showed up missing the shank. It was not etrailer’s fault as the shipment initially contained everything but the carrier messed up and the package didn’t arrive with the shank. I spoke to autumn in customer service and she did absolutely everything she could to get me the 2.5 inch shank I needed but ended up sending me the 2in receiver by mistake. Again I wasn’t upset because I did not specify and by the time I realized it was wrong the part was already on the way. Long story short I got the 2 in shank in the next day, this shank would work but it was not exactly for the load I wanted to safely pull. Anyway I ended up finding the correct shank, ordered it and it is one the way. Now I will have both the 2 and 2.5 in shank for the same distro hitch but guess what I am completely fine with it backside I have two trucks, each with different receivers so for just a little bit more I can use this hitch for both my trucks just fine. Everything happens for a reason and I was completely happy with how autumn helped me out. She was great and called me back several times to let me know what both she was trying to do and get assistance from several of her techs. Thank you and I will certainly do business with autumn and etrailer again. Autumn was really nice to me and did everything she could to help me out. Thanks again. Jason

The product I purchased, a 2-5/16" hitch 30,000 lbs ball, is very nice quality. I was very impressed. I had looked locally for a similar product, but was only able to find a hitch ball for about twice as much cost. As to the service from etrailer, I was equally impressed. Soon after I ordered the product, I recieved a personal email expressing thanks for the purchase. While I realize this may have been an automatic "canned" response, I got the feeling there was custormer interest and I could respond in email if I wished. Thank you. I will continue to order all my trailer and hitch needs from etrailer.

The ball is fine. But, the nut is 1 7/8, and is supposed to be torqued to 450 foot pounds. Who has a wrench that big? Not me. Nor my local Ace Hardware. I asked Etrailer.com if they would torque on the ball to the hitch that I ordered at the same time. They told me "no", they didn't have a wrench that big - ! So, I ordered a socket and a 35 inch breaker bar from amazon - for $70 - more than my new hitch and ball costs. At least shipping is free. Etrailer.com has lousy service/product support.

Comments
Thomas, thank you for your review. Yes, the ball does need to be torqued to 450 lbs. If you do not have a torque wrench that will torque that much weight most mechanic shops will let you rent one or torque the ball for you for a small fee.

Great price and 30k pound hitch that looks great as well. Still have not figured out how you torque it to 450ftlbs, but I will get it tight. It does not have flats on the ball side to hold tight. Will work great as the replacement gooseneck ball on my flatbed. Great prices and shipping is reasonable and fairly fast on all products. Will buy from Etrailers and tell others whenever they are looking for parts.

The forged ball mount is very heavy duty along with the hitch ball! The boat and trailer that I tow is 8000lbs. Empty. With these two pieces I will be able to tow with confidence. It’s just too bad there made in China! Thank you. etrailer!

Products have been excellent, website is easy to use. Only complaint....shipping. My black water tank valve which is plastic and fairly fragile was put in the same box as my 2 5/16 ball and 2 1/2 hitch which together probably weigh 30lbs. When the package arrived (in true UPD fashion) you could tell the box had been thrown around. Luckily the valve was not damaged.....My thought is the valve and hitch/ball should've been shipped separate.

The small amount of surface rust on your ball will not affect its future performance. If your motorhome does indeed have a hitch with a 10000 lb capacity, it means that the hitch is capable of towing a trailer weighing up to 10000 lbs. To confirm this, the hitch should have a sticker or plate on it listing the capacities. The tongue weight capacity should also be listed. Tongue weight is the amount of weight that can safely be suspended from the receiver (or the maximum downward force exerted). The hitch might also list a capacity for use with a weight distribution (W/D)...

  • Adjustable Ball Mount for 3 Inch Hitch on 2018 Ram 2500
We do have adjustable ball mounts that fit the 3" hitch on your 2018 Ram 2500 but there is not an option for an adjustable ball mount from Curt at this time; instead I strongly recommend checking out the B&W Tow & Stow 2-Ball Mount # BWTS30040B. The Tow & Stow will fit your 3" hitch and will give you a maximum drop of 7-1/2" and maximum rise of 7". It comes with a 2" hitch ball that has a maximum capacity of 7,500 lbs and a 2-5/16" hitch ball with a maximum capacity of 21,000 lbs. The...

  • Is there a Ball Mount Larger than a Class V 2-1/2 Inch
If your hitch receiver opening is larger than 2-1/2 inches then the next step up is a 3 inch if you are talking about physical size and not capacity. The 3 inch ball mount you need is # 40701 if this is the case. The hitch ball to fit is # C40085. This is not a common size though so I do recommend verifying the size of the receiver opening on the hitch. I have also included a link to our ball mount main page. If you mean capacity then the highest capacity 2-1/2 inch ball mount that we...

  • Compatibility of B&W Ball Mount on 2013 Chevy Silverado 1500 with Class IV Hitch
The B&W Heavy-Duty Ball Mount - 3" Rise, 4" Drop - 11-3/8" Long - 16,000 lbs # BWBMHD30013 will fit any 2 inch receiver, so you can use it with a Class IV hitch on your 2013 Silverado 1500. The ball mount is rated higher than your truck, so you will be limited by the towing capacity of your truck and not the ball mount. I recommend the 2-5/16 hitch ball # C40085 or the 2 inch ball # A-90. You may also want to consider a hitch lock like # e98880.

  • Shank for a 2-1/2 Inch Trailer Hitch to Use Reese 1700 Pound Weight Distribution
Reese weight distribution system # RP66075 does not come with a shank so if using it with a 2-1/2 inch trailer hitch you just need the appropriate shank. You can use # RP54977 with a 5-3/4 inch drop or 8-1/4 inch rise. You will also need a ball that has a 1-1/4 inch shank diameter such as # C40085.

  • Torklift SuperHitch Hero Recommendation for a 2013 Ford F-150 5-1/2 foot bed
You are correct, I checked with Torklift and the part # TLF1005H that you referenced has been confirmed to fit all bed lengths of your 2013 Ford F-150 so it would work well for you. For a ball mount shank you would want the part # TLM9000 and then for a ball mount adapter part # TLM9005 and hitch ball # C40085.
