Tekonsha POD Controls and Components

The Tekonsha POD is designed to mount in any direction, and it's especially suited for mounting on near-vertical dashes. All the controls are on the front of the module, so you can still access them with the controller tucked away in a convenient place.

Braking Output

Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change. Use the thumbwheel on the side to change the braking output level. The output setting will appear as a number on the digital display, with a higher number indicating higher braking power.


Manual Override

The Tekonsha POD keeps the manual override within easy reach on the front of the module, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. Push the slide-bar lever to activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you're cruising.


Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, with the controller designed with all of the controls on the front of the module so you can access them even if it's mounted upside down.


The included custom adapter plugs into the connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness, which is underneath your dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal. Once you have the wiring connected to your vehicle, just plug the other end into the POD. Because there are no wires to splice, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove the brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Time-Delayed Braking

What is time-delayed braking

The Tekonsha POD comes equipped with time-delayed braking. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the POD. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. The amount of braking power (output) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

Video Transcript for DIY Install: Tekonsha POD Trailer Brake Controller on your 2014 Dodge Durango

Today on our 2014 Dodge Durango, we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the Tekonsha PowerTrac. This time-delayed electronic brake controller is here to work for one or two axle trailers. Part number is 39523. To aid in our installation, we're also going to be using the Tekonsha plug-in wiring adapter for electronic brake controllers, part number 3045-P. The PowerTrac is going to be an excellent brake controller for the one or two axle trailers. This is going to allow us to have braking power in out trailers so we're not overloading our vehicle. It makes it much safer going down the road.

We hit our brakes, our trailer recognizes that, it also brakes and helps us get those loads slowed down. This is fully adjustable. See right now, with this small dial turned all the way toward us, we're getting maximum braking power. You see as I hit that manual override lever it turns a nice dark red color. As we we're to back that lever down, you'll see that color is going to get closer and closer to green.

This is going to allow us, for heavy load trailers or maybe if we're in a hilly, twisty-turny road kind of situation, we can raise up the level of output. That's the amount of braking power that's going to go to our trailer. As we get on flatter terrain, or as the weight of our trailer goes down and down, we're going to reduce that so we're not running the risk of actually locking up the wheels on our trailer, which can cause flat spotting. This is a time-delayed system. When we hit the brakes on our vehicle, it's going to boost up the amount of braking power going to the rear, up to our predetermined setting here that we've been able to customize for each trailering situation, our user preferences. Also, we have the option of using the easy to get to manual override lever here.

You'll see that you can use and brake up to whatever level you choose. I'll turn that all the way up and you'll see if we move it just a little bit we're getting a little color change. As we bring that further and further over, that's sending more and more braking power out to our trailer. Another benefit of the time-delayed system is, since there's not pendulum in there, we don't have to worry about mounting angles. That's going to give us just about unlimited possibilities as to where we can mount this. Of course, we want it to be within reach of the driver in a safe location where you're not going to be bumping your legs on it, hitting your knees on it or anything.

You can get it to a more out of the way location if you choose. The first step in our installation is going to find the plug underneath the dashboard that matches our 3045-P. As you can see, this is going to have a plug that will go right into the connection on the brake controller. It's going to come right from our factory connector, which this will plug in to. To find that, we need to look up here behind the emergency brake pedal. Some vehicles are going to have a felt panel down here. You can kind of see it here. We're going to get this pulled down and out of the way. We've got two push fasteners. We've got one located right here. If we come over, there will be another one right here in this area. To remove these, I'm going to use a trim panel tool. You could also use a screw driver. I just want to get in behind the head of it there and just pull down. I'm going to pull that down and out of the way. It may have a little plug here for the light. We'll just take that off. We'll set this aside for now. If you look right back there, that's going to be our plug. There's a zip tie kind of holding it in place there. Let's trim that to where we can get it angled up here so we can work with it. There we go. On the back side of that plug, right above where that plug was located, that's our brake pedal arm. We don't want to get anything back behind there, so we're going to run our plug . Our brake controller is going to be going over here on the right side of the steering wheel, so we know we want our plug over in this location. I'm going to run this up over a few of the braces that are up here on the dashboard, that way it'll have plenty of support. We've got a few things we can zip tie to off of up here. That floor vent will be a good area to use there. Back on this side, we're just going to plug in out two connectors. Then I'm going to bring it up and we can zip tie it off right to this wire loom. We'll bring out as much as we need here of our pigtail to make our connection with our brake controller. Then we can zip tie it off . right underneath here is the vent for the floor heat or for the heat that hits your feet. I'm going to go right around that, using a pretty good length of zip tie. Once we have that where we can get to it, you can see we can we can pull out some or be able to bring little bit back, just depending on how our connection needs to be. We'll want that to come out there and then we can put the panel back in that we removed earlier. That should work out real well for us. We're going to be mounting our bracket right here. You'll see there's a little bit of wiggle space there, so what we're going to do is just place a small washer right in behind it. We want to use the provided self-tapping screws, and we can use a 1/4" bit driver. Decide where we want it, and we'll just get those started. That'll give us a good, solid mounting location. With your brake controller . that's going to be the top. We've got two holes in the side there to choose from. We can go on the lower set of holes, which will allow for some adjustability, or that upper set of holes. I'm going to do the upper set of holes, just because it's going to allow us to get it further up away from the driver's leg. Again, with the provided self-tapping screws, we'll just get those threaded in each side. There's going to be four locations. Then we'll be able to snug those down. Now that we have this mounted into position, it will be easy to get to there. Now we can just plug in out pigtail. Now if you want to clean up the look of this, just some electrical tape or wire loom around that, not a bad idea. Get that plugged in. Tuck any of our excess back, just like that. We're installed. What we're going to do is plug in our simulated trailer back at the seven pole connector on the Durango. We want to see this LED light up green. With everything working properly, that completes our installation of the Tekonsha PowerTrac electronic brake controller, part number 39523, also using the Tekonsha plug-in wiring adapter, part number 3045-P, on our 2014 Dodge Durango.

    Hello Miguel, thanks for reaching out. What you are describing sounds normal for the Tekonsha POD Trailer Brake Controller # 39523. The light should only come on when the trailer is plugged in. You should see a green light when you hook up. The light would stay off with the trailer disconnected. This is completely normal and not a cause for concern.
