Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I bought a used 2003 Dodge 1500 pickup truck that has the towing package. It was missing the brake controller and this plug-in wiring adapter. I installed a brake controller that I bought from etrailer last spring for another vehicle I own and bought this wiring adapter. It was an easy install, it just plugged right in to the existing wiring harness. The plug-in adapter was just what I needed and I didn't have to cut or splice any wiring. It made the installation very easy and the price was very reasonable. 573093

2005 Dodge Ram Pickup

I purchased the Tekonsha P3 proportional brake controller and the Plug-in Wiring adaptor for my Dodge Ram Diesel 2005. It shipped promptly and arrived on schedule. I plugged it into the under-dash socket in about 30 seconds and tried it out before installing it; it powered up immediately and everything looked good. It took a few minutes to install the P3 bracket to the dashboard just to right of the steering column and about the level of my knee. The adaptor has enough length to put it left or right of the steering column, but not very high on the dash. The adaptor made the installation quite simple – gathering the tools and deciding controller placement took 20 minutes out of the total 30 minute installation time. The actual installation was to drill 2 holes and screw in 2 screws to the dash and 2 screws to the pocket bracket, then tying the cord to other wiring behind the dash. Settings for electric brakes and other info into the unit took under 2 minutes. Wow! What a difference - the braking was strong, smooth and uniform. I can only compare on my vehicle to braking without a controller unit engaging the trailer brakes, but it showed me how important those brakes are to an easy and safe stop. I have driven other people’s trucks with loaded horse trailers, and their controller units did not give anything like the constant readout of trailer brake voltage and other information this one gives you. This is obviously a high quality unit with everything I need and more. My priority is horse safety on the road and that includes smooth, proportional braking. I like the ability to monitor the voltage of the vehicle system, the volts and amps to the trailer, and troubleshooting capabilities. I spent 6 or 8 hours reading everything on brake controllers before ordering this one, and compared it to several other highly-rated units. While it is available for similar pricing from eBay and other sites, I found etrailer.com's website to make things very easy, such as finding the exact Plug-in Adaptor for my vehicle, finding videos about various controllers, and finding instructions for installing the unit. Thanks to the etrailer.com website, I was able to check under my dash to verify the brake controller plug was there waiting to be used, and I had a very realistic idea of the installation procedure in advance. Getting the Plug Adaptor in the same shipment was important too, and let me install it immediately. I was glad I ordered from etrailer.com and would not hesitate to order from them again. 164082

This review was so helpful after all my own research that it helped me feel cofident in my decision to try this connector on my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the factory tow package. Like she said. It takes longer to decide where to put it than it did to take it out of the box, plug it in and tie the cable neatly in place. One thing that she didnt say is that the sheathing around the 4 wires keeps the bundle as neat and clean as Ive ever seen in a wiring harness.

Still working great. I have not even used all the diagnostic features lately. Trips as far as Orlando to Dallas to Houston and back. No issues, and I have put it on and off about 10 times, ie unplugged it when trailer not hitched. Easy to adjust the boost on the brakes.

This part made it easy to install, and I have unplugged the controller each time I unhitch the trailer, then put it back in, clipping the plug-in adapter to the back and snapping the unit into its bracket, probably 10 times this year. Clicks in great each time, unit works perfectly and I use different boost when horse is not in the trailer, due to change in weight.

This product was a very easy install and initial setup. Only complaint is lack of option when trailer is not hooked up. I would like to present set my boost settings and break output and save them before actually getting hooked to my trailer. Then custom tune it once hooked up. Other than that, everything seems to be top notch. When it came to the install, I chose to stray away from the typical mounting location and go with a point closer on the center console. If not for that the installation of the P3 would have taken less than 5 minutes from start to finish. Truly plug and play. 261544

Bought this along with the Tekonsha Primus brake controller. The plug matched up perfectly with the plug in my 2000 Dodge Ram. Use this unit quite often and never had any issue with operation. I remember having a few questions when ordering and called customer service. I actually got in touch with a real person fairly quickly and not some answering service to be placed on hold forever. They were very knowledgeable and helpful in deciding on which plug and controller to purchase for my application. Will purchase from this company again when the need arises. 856114

  • Location of Brake Controller Connector-2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee w/ Factory Tow Package
The Tekonsha # 3045-P is the correct brake controller harness for your vehicle. The connector that the 3045-P plugs into is located under the dash to the left of the steering column taped to another wiring harness near the emergency brake pedal. In some cases, there's a trim panel under the dash that needs to be removed. If you click the link I've provided to the installation video, you can see where the connector is located at the 1:10 mark. The 3045-P plug is compatible with Tekonsha...

To install either controller in a 2007 Dodge Ram would only require the install harness part # 3020-P.

  • Why Does a Trailer Brake Controller Stay On when the Key is Turned Off on a 2002 Dodge Ram 2500
I am not sure which brake controller you are using but most controllers are connected to a fused power source directly to the battery and not an ignition source. This means the controller can draw power even with the key off. • Brake Controller Needed and Differences Between Electric and Electric/Hydraulic Braking Systems
I'd be happy to explain that a bit for you. There are a few different braking systems available for trailers, with electric being the most common. The brake controller sends voltage back to the electromagnets in the brake assemblies, which stick to the inside of the drums, spreading the brake drums apart so they push against the inside of the drums helping to stop the trailer. Some trailers use hydraulic brakes, like cars do. These can be actuated by a surge coupler that compresses...
