Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Video Transcript for Brake Controller Installation - 2005 Dodge Ram 3500

Alright today on this 2003 doge ram 3500 pick up, were going to install parts for brake controller part number 90885. Were also going to install the adaptor core part number 3020-p. First off well go ahead and show you where the port is at on the vehicle, the tilt port is right behind this wire harness, its the blue socket right here. Were going to take our adapt cord and draw out the back, just plug right into it.Now the wire harness around it makes it for a tight fit, so you may have to pop the port loose to get a better angle at it to install it. Make sure it snaps into place and we got a cord. Now we go and find a spot to mount our bracket for our brake controller.

Take our brake controller, well snap it into a bracket, we need a feel for how much space its going to take up and where were going to put it. It looks like were going to locate our bracket right in this spot about here. Inaudible 00:00:50 included hardware and were just going to run it straight into the dash, just take a good look behind it, make sure theres nothing behind it that you can mess up and well go ahead and run it into the dash. Now its a good idea to take some lubricant and clean out the threads here and go ahead and screw it into the dash board. Well take a cord, run it out to our bracket, plug in our brake controller, snap it in place, already got power so thats good.

Then take our wire harness and zip tie it out of the way. Ok in a few easy steps were already finished with our installation, now well go and test it with the trailer. And with that, that will finish it for our install of part number 90885 the Prodigy brake controller and the adapter cord part number 3020-p.

2005 Dodge Ram Pickup

I purchased the Tekonsha P3 proportional brake controller and the Plug-in Wiring adaptor for my Dodge Ram Diesel 2005. It shipped promptly and arrived on schedule. I plugged it into the under-dash socket in about 30 seconds and tried it out before installing it; it powered up immediately and everything looked good. It took a few minutes to install the P3 bracket to the dashboard just to right of the steering column and about the level of my knee. The adaptor has enough length to put it left or right of the steering column, but not very high on the dash. The adaptor made the installation quite simple – gathering the tools and deciding controller placement took 20 minutes out of the total 30 minute installation time. The actual installation was to drill 2 holes and screw in 2 screws to the dash and 2 screws to the pocket bracket, then tying the cord to other wiring behind the dash. Settings for electric brakes and other info into the unit took under 2 minutes. Wow! What a difference - the braking was strong, smooth and uniform. I can only compare on my vehicle to braking without a controller unit engaging the trailer brakes, but it showed me how important those brakes are to an easy and safe stop. I have driven other people’s trucks with loaded horse trailers, and their controller units did not give anything like the constant readout of trailer brake voltage and other information this one gives you. This is obviously a high quality unit with everything I need and more. My priority is horse safety on the road and that includes smooth, proportional braking. I like the ability to monitor the voltage of the vehicle system, the volts and amps to the trailer, and troubleshooting capabilities. I spent 6 or 8 hours reading everything on brake controllers before ordering this one, and compared it to several other highly-rated units. While it is available for similar pricing from eBay and other sites, I found etrailer.com's website to make things very easy, such as finding the exact Plug-in Adaptor for my vehicle, finding videos about various controllers, and finding instructions for installing the unit. Thanks to the etrailer.com website, I was able to check under my dash to verify the brake controller plug was there waiting to be used, and I had a very realistic idea of the installation procedure in advance. Getting the Plug Adaptor in the same shipment was important too, and let me install it immediately. I was glad I ordered from etrailer.com and would not hesitate to order from them again. 164082

This review was so helpful after all my own research that it helped me feel cofident in my decision to try this connector on my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the factory tow package. Like she said. It takes longer to decide where to put it than it did to take it out of the box, plug it in and tie the cable neatly in place. One thing that she didnt say is that the sheathing around the 4 wires keeps the bundle as neat and clean as Ive ever seen in a wiring harness.

Still working great. I have not even used all the diagnostic features lately. Trips as far as Orlando to Dallas to Houston and back. No issues, and I have put it on and off about 10 times, ie unplugged it when trailer not hitched. Easy to adjust the boost on the brakes.

This part made it easy to install, and I have unplugged the controller each time I unhitch the trailer, then put it back in, clipping the plug-in adapter to the back and snapping the unit into its bracket, probably 10 times this year. Clicks in great each time, unit works perfectly and I use different boost when horse is not in the trailer, due to change in weight.

2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I bought a used 2003 Dodge 1500 pickup truck that has the towing package. It was missing the brake controller and this plug-in wiring adapter. I installed a brake controller that I bought from etrailer last spring for another vehicle I own and bought this wiring adapter. It was an easy install, it just plugged right in to the existing wiring harness. The plug-in adapter was just what I needed and I didn't have to cut or splice any wiring. It made the installation very easy and the price was very reasonable. 573093

This product was a very easy install and initial setup. Only complaint is lack of option when trailer is not hooked up. I would like to present set my boost settings and break output and save them before actually getting hooked to my trailer. Then custom tune it once hooked up. Other than that, everything seems to be top notch. When it came to the install, I chose to stray away from the typical mounting location and go with a point closer on the center console. If not for that the installation of the P3 would have taken less than 5 minutes from start to finish. Truly plug and play. 261544

2006 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

I havent had a need for a trailer brake controller for many years. I read many reviews and finally decided on the Tekonsha Prodigy 3. It was modern and looked relatively simple to set set up and use. I picked up the phone on Monday called etrailer and the told salesman what i needed . I received my controller and harness specific for my 2006 2500 dodge on Thursday. I installed it in my truck on Friday. It took bout 30 minutes. I bought a 29' travel trailer on Saturday. Brake controller was easy to set up following the instructions that came with it. 30 minutes may sound a little long but that was because i mounted in wrong location 1st time (kept hitting my knee on it getting in and out of truck) Stinks being short!! I cant compare it to any other controllers but i can say etrailer and Tekonsha met my expectations. Thanks 345949

2005 Honda Pilot

I have a 2005 Dodge pu w trailer package but usually just pull around a utility trailer with a quad in it. I'm renting a toy hauler travel trailer and had to have an electric brake controller. Th best price quote I got was 150$ labor and the retail price of the controller! I was looking at $400 or so. I watched a YouTube video and saw how easy it was so I ordered the controller and the truck specific cable. The cable connection was idiot proof! I located the unit to the right of the steering column. I spent more time waiting for my rechargeable drill to come alive to pilot the two little screws that hold it on! It could not be easier. It powered up automatically. Set up looks easy. I haven't plugged it into the rental trailer yet (in a couple weeks) so I cannot comment on performance but I am very confident that it will work as advertised. It irks me how much the Dodge dealer wanted for such an easy installation. Save yourself some money and time- do it yourself. I'd say the installation on a truck with a trailer package is about as complicated as changing you wiper inserts. 264791

What a fantastic experience I had purchasing my brake controller from etrailer.com!! I called from my vacation in the middle of a small town of Wallowa, Oregon, and spoke to Tayler K., she helped me with my purchase and expedited my order. I was stuck with no trailer brakes and needed to drive over a mountain pass within two days. With Tayler K.'s help, my brake controller arrived in less than 24 hours!! That is excellent customer service. The controller I purchased, the Tekonsha Prodigy P3, is fantastic and gave me the perfect boost and brake control I needed to go over the mountian passes, with my 40' 5th wheel. Thank you again Tayler K. and etrailer for your great service. Wade 681702

Product arrived ahead of estimated date. As I was replacing an older Tekonsha unit, I just used the existing mounting bracket rather than either of the new brackets. I also ordered the truck specific cable/plug assembly so that I just had to plug it in. Have not yet towed with the new control, but for sure it will be easier to set up and adjust when needed than the old unit which just had a single bi color LED. This is my second order from etrailer, and in both cases they arrived in fine shape and on time or early. Price was the same as at that big box online site, but etrailer has employees who can answer technical questions about the products, and they have excellent informational videos. With that other site, you are on you own. You couldn't find anyone there with product knowledge if your life depended on it. 664906

Bought this product a year ago after upgrading to a 35’ fifth wheel weighing 12,900 from a 31’ travel trailer weighing half as much. The old brake controller wasn’t up to the task that the newer one provided. Only one problem with the installation as electrical connection did not want to connect properly. Installed two new batteries in my truck and the electrical changeover of installing the new batteries rectified the problem. It has been a great addition and tremendously increased stopping power and even advised me when I had a problem on my fifth wheel brakes.I highly recommend this product! 655995

Read reviews from others and actually found a local guy who had one of these. From all this feedback, I decided to buy this Tekonsha P3. WOW, what a difference from my old brake controller. Have pulled our 37 feet 5th Wheel RV twice now, and I certainly tell a difference with the trailer brakes. Much more confidence is stopping distance and response of trailer brakes with this controller. Would highly recommend. 649737

  • Yes, assuming that plug you have found does indeed contain the trailer brake and battery charge circuits you can clip this off and then hardwire in a 7-way for which I recommend using the Hopkins Endurance Quick-Install 7-Way Trailer Connector with Universal Pigtail Harness part # HM47210. I can't tell you what color wires go where though so you will need to test this yourself. In order to complete your towing setup you will need a brake controller, the Draw-Tite I-Command Trailer Brake...

  • Brake Controller Wiring on a 2000 Dodge Dakota
  • You do not mention whether the 7 way is factory installed. If it is, there should be a plug located behind the parking brake pedal. With the Dodge wiring adapter, part # 3020-P you should be able to easily complete your installation. Behind the emergency brake pedal, look for a small white box mounted on the firewall. The connector is typically located just above this box.

  • Unplugging a Brake Controller from a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500
  • On a brake controller wiring harness for your 2006 Dodge Ram 2500, the end that plugs into the truck has a tab on one of the longer sides. This tab fits in a mating tab on the truck's connector. When installed, the tabs lock. On the brake controller end you can push down behind where the tab is and pull the connectors apart at the same time. It is possible that the tabs could be "seized" and you would need a small, flat blade screwdriver to apply some gentle prying force.

  • Will Brake Controller Rated for Two Brake Axles Work on Tandem Axle Trailer
  • Yes, if you only ever plan to tow up to a 2 axle trailer then a brake controller that is rated for up to two brake assemblies would work just fine. The Tekonsha PowerTrac part # 39523 would be a great option for this as it is our best selling controller for up to 2 axles. To install it in your 1997 Dodge Ram would only require the install harness part # 3020-P.

  • Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500
  • For your 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 with the factory 7-Way trailer connector I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885, because its easy to set up and use and it is reliable. This is a proportional controller that will apply the trailer brakes in proportion to how much the Ram is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on the trailer and vehicle brakes. To plug in the controller to your truck you will need wiring harness # 3020-P. I have included a link to a video showing...

  • Recommendation For a Brake Controller on a 2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Diesel
  • Brake controllers are universal items so most brake controllers will fit on most vehicles by using the correct adapters. The brake controller will have no problem working with your vehicles on board computer. For your 2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Diesel I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, part # 90885. The Prodigy 2 brake controller is our best selling model. It can be mounted in a 360 degree vertical range and will level itself automatically. It is a proportional brake...

  • Availability of Longer Version of Wire Adapter # 3020-P
  • We do not offer an extra-long version of the Tekonsha brake control wiring adapter # 3020-P, but you can easily make a longer harness for your 2007 Ram 2500 for use with a Tekonsha or Draw-Tite controller by using part # 7894 along with the # 3020-P. All you'll need to do is cut of the flat black connector from # 3020-P adapter and splice its four wires, color for color, to the # 7894. This item includes the butt connectors for both wire gauges used. This will give you close to 30-inches...

  • Parts Needed to Install Brake Controller in 1997 Dodge Ram
  • The brake controller install harness you'd need for installing a Tekonsha brake controller # TK90160 in your 1997 Dodge Ram is the part # 3020-P if you have the factory 7-way at the rear of the truck. Since it sounds like you do not have any trailer wiring on your truck you'll need to start with a 4-way # 118329. From there you would need to convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install the brake controller. For that you will want the Brake Controller Install Kit and 7-Way...

  • What Is Needed to Use the Hayes Sway Master Electronic Sway Control System Part # HA81775
  • As long as your trailer has electric or electric-over-hydraulic brakes and the tow vehicle has a has a fully functioning 7-way then the Hayes Sway Master Electronic Sway Control System part # HA81775 will work well for you. You will not need any sort of progressive braking assembly or kit. If you don't already have a brake controller, I recommend using the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Trailer Brake Controller part # 90885 which is one of our best selling brake controllers due to its ease of...

  • Locating Blue Wire On Motorhome When Installing Brake Controller
  • Larger motor homes typically do not come with the brake controller wiring installed. The first step I would take is to make sure that the connector you found on the motor home under the dash is indeed for a brake controller. If the connector on the motor home matches the connector you purchased, then you should be able to plug in the harness and test the pins for the black and the red wires using a circuit tester like part # 40376. The black wire should show 12 volt power all the time,...

  • How to Install a Brake Controller on a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 With a factory 4-Way
  • To utilize the plug-in connector for a brake controller on your 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 you simply need to run 10 Gauge Wire # 10-1-1 from the pin in the 5 o'clock position (see attached photo) up right behind the front wheel well on your driver side. If you check out the picture I attached you should find that connector by the wheel well. The blue wire should be the one that carries the brake controller signal but you will want to verify this with a circuit tester like part # PTW2992. This...

  • How to Install a Brake Controller on a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Without Factory 7-Way Trailer Wiring
  • The best option on Jeep vehicles without a factory 7-way is to use the # ETBC7 brake controller installation kit that you purchased, see instructions link. The 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee without tow package may have the connector under the dash from the factory, but, if present, it most likely is not fully functional. In addition there was no 7-Way at the rear of the vehicle so the blue wire from the harness is terminated somewhere in the factory wiring harness. We do not recommend digging...

  • Converting Military Trailer W/ Air Assist Hydraulic Drum Brakes to an Electric Over Hydraulic System
  • From a price, performance and reliability standpoint, I would recommend the Carlisle HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for drum brakes, part # HBA-10. You would also need a breakaway kit like the # 50-85-313 offered by Tekonsha as well as an in-cab brake controller that is electric over hydraulic compatible, like the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885 or the P3, part # 90195. Both controllers are electric over hydraulic compatible, but the P3 is a bit more user-friendly for those...

  • Brake Controller Recommendation for a 1999 Dodge Ram 3500 Dually and 5th Wheel Trailer
  • For your 1999 Dodge Ram 3500 Dually and 5th wheel trailer I recommend using a proportional brake controller. A proportional controller will apply the trailer brakes in proportion to how much the truck is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on the trailer and truck brakes. The proportional controller I recommend is the P2 # 90885 because its easy to set up and use and it is reliable. If your truck came with a factory installed 7-Way connector then you...

  • Locating Brake Controller Port on 2007 Dodge Durango Equipped with Factory Tow Package
  • Since your 2007 Dodge Durango is equipped with a factory tow package it will have a connection port for a brake controller. The connector is usually routed over near the emergency brake pedal but it is possible that the wire harness and connector are zip-tied to other under-dash wiring or tucked behind a trim panel. It may be helpful to temporarily remove the left kick panel (to the left of your left ankle when behind the wheel) to give you better access to the vehicle wiring. If not...
