Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

I purchased the Tekonsha P3 proportional brake controller and the Plug-in Wiring adaptor for my Dodge Ram Diesel 2005. It shipped promptly and arrived on schedule. I plugged it into the under-dash socket in about 30 seconds and tried it out before installing it; it powered up immediately and everything looked good. It took a few minutes to install the P3 bracket to the dashboard just to right of the steering column and about the level of my knee. The adaptor has enough length to put it left or right of the steering column, but not very high on the dash. The adaptor made the installation quite simple – gathering the tools and deciding controller placement took 20 minutes out of the total 30 minute installation time. The actual installation was to drill 2 holes and screw in 2 screws to the dash and 2 screws to the pocket bracket, then tying the cord to other wiring behind the dash. Settings for electric brakes and other info into the unit took under 2 minutes. Wow! What a difference - the braking was strong, smooth and uniform. I can only compare on my vehicle to braking without a controller unit engaging the trailer brakes, but it showed me how important those brakes are to an easy and safe stop. I have driven other people’s trucks with loaded horse trailers, and their controller units did not give anything like the constant readout of trailer brake voltage and other information this one gives you. This is obviously a high quality unit with everything I need and more. My priority is horse safety on the road and that includes smooth, proportional braking. I like the ability to monitor the voltage of the vehicle system, the volts and amps to the trailer, and troubleshooting capabilities. I spent 6 or 8 hours reading everything on brake controllers before ordering this one, and compared it to several other highly-rated units. While it is available for similar pricing from eBay and other sites, I found etrailer.com's website to make things very easy, such as finding the exact Plug-in Adaptor for my vehicle, finding videos about various controllers, and finding instructions for installing the unit. Thanks to the etrailer.com website, I was able to check under my dash to verify the brake controller plug was there waiting to be used, and I had a very realistic idea of the installation procedure in advance. Getting the Plug Adaptor in the same shipment was important too, and let me install it immediately. I was glad I ordered from etrailer.com and would not hesitate to order from them again. 164082

This review was so helpful after all my own research that it helped me feel cofident in my decision to try this connector on my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the factory tow package. Like she said. It takes longer to decide where to put it than it did to take it out of the box, plug it in and tie the cable neatly in place. One thing that she didnt say is that the sheathing around the 4 wires keeps the bundle as neat and clean as Ive ever seen in a wiring harness.

Still working great. I have not even used all the diagnostic features lately. Trips as far as Orlando to Dallas to Houston and back. No issues, and I have put it on and off about 10 times, ie unplugged it when trailer not hitched. Easy to adjust the boost on the brakes.

This part made it easy to install, and I have unplugged the controller each time I unhitch the trailer, then put it back in, clipping the plug-in adapter to the back and snapping the unit into its bracket, probably 10 times this year. Clicks in great each time, unit works perfectly and I use different boost when horse is not in the trailer, due to change in weight.

This etrailer part "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P" is a PERFECT fit for my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Tekonsha P3 brake controller. After a LOT of research I discovered that in the Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ series (1999-2004) the 2001 model with "factory installed tow package", was the only year that did not have the 'the tucked away blue wire running back to the 7-pin trailer connector at the rear of the car. Instead a prewired connector was installed. According to the Jeep WJ users site, the Mopar part #56020142AB (wire harness with the appropriate connector for 2001 Jeep GC) had been discontinued, but Tekonsha Corp. (brake controller manufacturer) had a suitable replacement part. The page link on WJ Jeeps to the correct part at Tekonsha was broken and a search of Tekonsha's website produced no wiring that would even remotely help. After crawling under my dash and removing the electrical fuse cover I found a blue connector. I took a photo of the connector so that I hopefully could find a connector that would help me avoid a complete engine compartment to rear bumper wiring installation. Here on etrailer I found the brake controller I wanted and started looking at what I needed to make it operational. I tried everything I could think of (including writing the etrailer tech) to find out if the "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P would work for my 2001 Jeep. No one was certain. Sooo... I decided that at a cost of $14.99 it was worth it to buy - try - and return if necessary. I also figured if 'worst-came-to-worse' I may want to cut off the Dodge connector and use this shielded wire set instead of Tekonsha's wire harness by snipping off the Dodge connector. 5 minutes out of the box my Tekonsha P3 was lit up and a test light confirmed I had power to the factory installed 7-pin trailer connector at the rear using this etrailer part. It snapped into both connections perfectly. The 30" length sounded adequate, but looked short out of the box. It turns out I have many mounting options with this length. Although it may not be mounted for a day or 2, I've decided to mount it on the left side of the steering wheel column. That's well out of the way of my long legs and yet in easy reach for manually engaging the trailer brake with the hand lever on my brake controller while driving. I would recommend "Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers - Dodge - #3020-P" for ANY brake controller installed in a 2001 Jeep GC with the factory installed Mopar/Dodge connector. Just cut off the Tekonsha connector and butt connect the harnesses: BLUE to trailer connector * WHITE to ground - * RED to BRAKE switch (or recommended brake pedal connection point) * BLACK to battery + Attached photos: original Mopar brake controller harness for factory installed tow package 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee; etrailer's photo of the dodge connector for Tekonsha controller for visual comparison; a photo of the connector found under my dash; a photo of etrailer part #3020-P connected to my underdash connector; a photo showing the reach of the cable for a possible dash mount; and a photo showing the possible reach for a hidden ash tray mount. 175397

This product was a very easy install and initial setup. Only complaint is lack of option when trailer is not hooked up. I would like to present set my boost settings and break output and save them before actually getting hooked to my trailer. Then custom tune it once hooked up. Other than that, everything seems to be top notch. When it came to the install, I chose to stray away from the typical mounting location and go with a point closer on the center console. If not for that the installation of the P3 would have taken less than 5 minutes from start to finish. Truly plug and play. 261544

I have a 2005 Dodge pu w trailer package but usually just pull around a utility trailer with a quad in it. I'm renting a toy hauler travel trailer and had to have an electric brake controller. Th best price quote I got was 150$ labor and the retail price of the controller! I was looking at $400 or so. I watched a YouTube video and saw how easy it was so I ordered the controller and the truck specific cable. The cable connection was idiot proof! I located the unit to the right of the steering column. I spent more time waiting for my rechargeable drill to come alive to pilot the two little screws that hold it on! It could not be easier. It powered up automatically. Set up looks easy. I haven't plugged it into the rental trailer yet (in a couple weeks) so I cannot comment on performance but I am very confident that it will work as advertised. It irks me how much the Dodge dealer wanted for such an easy installation. Save yourself some money and time- do it yourself. I'd say the installation on a truck with a trailer package is about as complicated as changing you wiper inserts. 264791

Received brake controller faster than I expected - great service! Installation was a breeze, only took minutes - truly plug and play. Haven't had the opportunity to use it yet, but am confident it will work exactly as advertised. A friend has the same model, and it works great with his trailers. 147079

This is a plug and play with the P3 controller. It was perfect for my application. It is plenty long enough to run your controller over to right of steering column. I actually put mine in the factory ash tray so that I could more easily see it/operate it, without obstructed view of steering wheel. It is a very tidy piece also. Looks great under dash. Service was excellent from sellers and fast shipping even to AK. To bad it isn't free shipping up here haha 352707

I havent had a need for a trailer brake controller for many years. I read many reviews and finally decided on the Tekonsha Prodigy 3. It was modern and looked relatively simple to set set up and use. I picked up the phone on Monday called etrailer and the told salesman what i needed . I received my controller and harness specific for my 2006 2500 dodge on Thursday. I installed it in my truck on Friday. It took bout 30 minutes. I bought a 29' travel trailer on Saturday. Brake controller was easy to set up following the instructions that came with it. 30 minutes may sound a little long but that was because i mounted in wrong location 1st time (kept hitting my knee on it getting in and out of truck) Stinks being short!! I cant compare it to any other controllers but i can say etrailer and Tekonsha met my expectations. Thanks 345949

I installed the Tekonsha Brake Controller a year ago, right after I boughtit, and it has worked very well. We just finished a 7,000 mile trip through12 western states with our travel trailer which included crossing thecontinental divide several times, and the controller worked without issuethe whole time.Regards

Purchased the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 Trailer Brake Controller (90195) and two plug-in wiring adapters (3020-P) for both my Dodge RAM trucks. Reason - Purchased a used 23 ft travel trailer that had brakes. Too easy of an install with the plug-in wiring adapters as my trucks both came with the factory installed 7-pin. It took about 1 min to connect the controller cables to both my trucks and about 10 min to mount my brake controller (5-6 min of that was deciding on where to install). Conducted a local road test after adjusting the power to the trailer brakes and also tested the boost on level one. Provides me with a much more confident braking experience. Great shipping, pleased with product and anxious to get out for a fall camping experience yet this year. A must buy ! 228197

Pretty straightforward order, however I was able to confirm what I needed and how to install it, on my model/make/year. Well over 100 step-by-step tutorials on every install imaginable. Their customer service is one of the fastest in communication and updates on order/shipping status. This particular project had a few surprises in the wiring so I called etrailer customer service, where Madison walked me through the troubleshooting steps at which time I felt stupid because she made it seem like common sense! (kidding, Madison was very patient and polite and never seemed annoyed or condescending as has been with many "techie" customer service reps. I've ordered from these guys a dozen times and service has been consistent and pleasant every time. 263274

Ordered product, and was shipped out the next day. Got in mail a few days later. Very easy install, I removed the old brake controller and installed the wiring adapter (just plugs in under the dash). Mounted controller to metal mounting bracket. This controller works great, I am very familiar with other controllers, I really like the proportional braking, brakes work great on my landscape and dump trailer. I tried light braking to heavy braking, adjusts properly and quickly to situation, no lockup with empty or loaded trailer. I pull trailers 5-6 days a week and I am glad to have a working brake controller again. Very satisfied with this product, just hope it lasts longer than the other brand I installed. 95931

I purchased a P3 brake controller and wiring replacement for my dodge ram truck from E-Trailer and could not be happier with the service and the products. My order was delivered very quickly. The wiring replacement was as good as the OEM part that originally came with the truck. Installation was plug and play once I decided where I wanted to place the bracket for the controller. If this 53 year old lady can do it, anybody can. It was easy. I might add that I shopped around to see what I could get this same controller and wiring for locally and the cheapest was over $100 more than I spent for the same components from E-Trailer! 7615

This connects to my Tekonsha 90195 P3 Electronic Brake Control to the factory brake connector on my 97' Dodge Ram 1500 pickup. The only additional item I purchased was the etrailer Universal Installation Brake Controller Kit (ETBC7) because my truck didn't have the additional wiring for the Brake Control signal (blue wire). The Kit comes with everything you need including relays. It took a few hours for the install but now I can use my brake controller on my truck and 2008 Ford Explorer since I purchased the proper connector for it as well (it has a factory tow package and that saved a lot of time). 360742

This is the second time I've ordered products from Etrailer. They shipped the products extremely quickly (both times) and I received them substantially earlier than expected. I previously ordered a Prodigy brake controller and all the parts needed to do a full install, since my truck was not wired for a trailer. I just purchased a 2006 Ram 3500 and used this cable to connect to the factory harness. It worked as advertised and I was able to reuse my exisiting controller without any problems. I will definitely be using Etrailer for future purchases based on their excellent customer service and pricing. 22503

This was my first purchase with etrailer and I am very satisfied with the wiring harness I purchased for my brake box I use for our fifth wheel trailer. It was a direct plug in from truck to box with no splicing! As pleased as I am with the product I am even more impressed with Kristen who found me the exact fit part I needed, emailed me a tracking no. AND sent me a follow-up email to confirm I had received my order. Thank you Kristen for your great customer service!! I will use etrailer again and would certainly recommend them to anyone looking for trailer parts or accessories. 364294

We needed a brake controller for our aging Dodge Ram 1500 pickup so we could pull our newly commissioned mobile coffee shop. I Googled it and got a link for our exact truck and a recommended brake controller. The etrailer.com link was complete with installation videos, recommended wiring harness and the brake controller. I placed the order and the parts arrived a day early! True to the documentation, the brake controller was "plug and play", even in my 16 year old truck! Etrailer.com has hit the mark with their excellent website! No reason to shop anywhere else! 389905

I was lucky enough to have checked the tracking update and saw it had been dropped off at the post office the next town over so I run down there and they were nice enough to keep an eye out for it and called me when they found it, if it wasn't for me checking up on it, it would have been sent back to you guys. 178246

I purchased the Prodigy P2 controller, universal installation kit and wiring adapter for my 2008 Dodge 1500 truck. I used the installation video that was available on the etrailer website and the installation went off without a hitch. Took a little over 2 hours to do the entire job and am very happy with the results. The P2's braking force is easily adjusted for various trailer loads and works extremely well. All in all, a great after market brake controller at significantly less cost than from the dealer. 387129

I had the benefit of having a factory installed tow package on my 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 pick up. With that being said, I was still unsure of if what I saw online would work. I contacted etrailer.com via email and they answered all my questions and concerns within a few emails. I bought the product and install extremely easy. My only complaint is that the cable is not very long. Approx 3ft or so. But other then that, it works great and help me tow my bobcat on my 16' trailer with ease of stopping. 103305

Installation was a breeze, I used it last sunday towing my stock trailer, the digital display is nice. The gal I spoke to at etrailer was very helpful for me while deciding which controller to install. I regularly tow a 16' steel stock trailer as well as occasionally tow brick and masonry materials, the p3 proportional was a major step up from my old school drawtite electric controller. The self leveling feature of the p3 has already been helpful for me. I am pleased with the product. 42792

Easy install in 2008 Dodge 1500. I brought down the wire block behind the e-brake, snipped the tie wrap holding the factor installed wire harness and plugged in the ele brake harness to it. Put the wire block back up and ran the wire harness over the peddle support and back down the other side to connect it to the Prodigy P3. Total time was 10 min for complete install. Another 15 min troubleshooting why it was not working. Fuse was blown and replacement remedied that. 181994

This cable worked perfectly! It fit into my Durango's plug great and the cable length was just right. The video suggested you unlatch the Durango's electric brake connector from the large white connector. I tried this, but was unable to get it to unlatch. As it turned out, the plug from the new wiring adapter fit into the Durango's plug without unlatching. So, installing was much easier. Thank you for providing this cable as an option for installing. 214415

I purchased this for my 2008 dodge Dakota. It did not have factory tow package but they do have the factory connector. Power in, brake power and ground are all there and trailer brake out comes out of the cab through factory harness and to a connector under truck where it dead ends. With this connector I only had to connect brake controller to factory connector and then wire from under cab to the rear of truck (one wire). Made this very easy 188790

I installed the electronic 3020-p break controller with the harness for a dodge ram in about 20 minutes. It was about as easy as it could be with the correct products from E-Trailer. I have not hooked up to my travel trailer as yet but foresee no major problems after reading the supplied directions for doing so. Thanks again. I could take pictures of the installation but don't know how to attach and send them to you. Thanks for great products. 95537

Good product - install was easy - had the install done in 30 minutes - hardest part was deciding where to mount it in my vehicle. I used the included 'housing' for the unit and mounted that housing to my dash so that all I have to do is clip into place when needed. My vehicle has factory tow already installed so all I had to do was plug in the correct harness to the unit and the other end into the tralier brake clip on my vehicle. 156853

Have a 2008 Dodge Ram 2500 with the trailer tow group. That gives you the factory wiring for the 7 way plug. I have a Prodigy controller. This harness is a "click" - "click" to install. I clicked it in the back of the controller and clicked it into the truck's harness. Done. No butt connections, no splicing, no corrosion issues down the road. The harness is a little shorter than I wanted but that was a very minor issue. 336806

I don't know why I waited. I've used this adapter on another truck and forgot about it....and I'm sad I did. It was SO easy to install. I unclipped the blue truck side plug to have space to plug the adapter in and then slide the blue plug right back where it was. A couple of zip ties and my controller was ready to go. I still have to tune the controller to the truck/trailer combo I have, but this made it SO easy!! 365393

The Tekonsha brake controller works well, I've had no issues with it. The adaptor for my pick-up truck fit perfectly. I was kind of wondering if it would because my truck is a 1996. I have used etrailer a few times over the years and I find their website easy to use, I have always found what I am looking for, the prices are reasonable and delivery times are quick. I would recommend them to anyone. 352882

I purchased the Tekonsha P-3 and the plug and play harness for a 2006 Dodge ram. Cathy of etrailer was very helpful. I was concerned about shipping and Cathy promised that she would get it out that day. Sure enough I got a follow up e mail letting me know that it went out that day. I even got an e mail letting me know that it has been delivered. Outstanding customer service! 31726

  • Installing Brake Controller on 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4
  • Thank you for sending the photo, it really makes things easier! The connector you show in your photo is not the connector for installing a brake controller. If you look on the firewall behind the emergency brake, you will see a white wiring junction box. The blue female connector that accepts the # 3020-P brake control wiring adapter is located alongside or on top of this junction box, as you can see in the photo I have edited for you. I have also linked you to an install video that...

  • Location of Brake Control Connector on 2004 Dodge Ram
  • Your 2004 Dodge should have the connector if the 4-pole connector was factory installed, but it might be a bit tricky to locate. Behind the emergency brake pedal on the firewall is a white junction box. The blue connector you are looking for is located above the junction box, and is sometimes actually pinned to the top of the box. You might need to give the connector a tug to get it free. The connector is sometimes hidden by the wires entering the top of the box, so sometimes you will...

  • Parts Needed for Setting up a 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 For a Trailer with Electric Brakes
  • If your 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 came with a 7-Way trailer connector from the factory it is pre-wired for a brake controller. If this is the case, all you would need is a brake controller and the wiring harness to plug the controller into the port under the dash. Our most popular brake controller is the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885. It is a pretty easy controller to use and is quite effective.
