Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

This adapter plugs into the 4-pin connector on your vehicle's built-in brake control wiring harness. The harness is located underneath the dash, to the left of the steering column, taped to another harness near the emergency brake pedal.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Video Transcript for Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2006 Dodge Ram

Today is 2006 Dodge 3500, were going to install brake controller from Tekonsha to P3 part number 90195 and a brake controller adapter part number 3020-P from Tekonsha. All right, first thing well do is go ahead and take our adapter cord and plug it into port just underneath the dash. This end of the adapter cord Im going to plug it into the port underneath the dash. Plug and well just go ahead and plug until it snaps and were good to go. Leave that alone for now, then well find a spot to mount our brake controller. This truck has a brake controller previously, so well actually one of its existing holes thats already in the dash and through that room were going to work here.

Make sure our brackets level and will install screw on the other side into the new plastic. Plug our wire harness to the brake controller and then were going to mount the brake controller through the bracket. Now all we got to do is take our cord and zip tight it up and out of way. And with those few steps, were already finished. And there you have it for the P3 brake controller, part number 90195 and the adapter cord part number 3020-P on a 2006 Dodge 3500..

2003 Chevrolet Silverado 1500

I bought a used 2003 Dodge 1500 pickup truck that has the towing package. It was missing the brake controller and this plug-in wiring adapter. I installed a brake controller that I bought from etrailer last spring for another vehicle I own and bought this wiring adapter. It was an easy install, it just plugged right in to the existing wiring harness. The plug-in adapter was just what I needed and I didn't have to cut or splice any wiring. It made the installation very easy and the price was very reasonable. 573093

2005 Dodge Ram Pickup

I purchased the Tekonsha P3 proportional brake controller and the Plug-in Wiring adaptor for my Dodge Ram Diesel 2005. It shipped promptly and arrived on schedule. I plugged it into the under-dash socket in about 30 seconds and tried it out before installing it; it powered up immediately and everything looked good. It took a few minutes to install the P3 bracket to the dashboard just to right of the steering column and about the level of my knee. The adaptor has enough length to put it left or right of the steering column, but not very high on the dash. The adaptor made the installation quite simple – gathering the tools and deciding controller placement took 20 minutes out of the total 30 minute installation time. The actual installation was to drill 2 holes and screw in 2 screws to the dash and 2 screws to the pocket bracket, then tying the cord to other wiring behind the dash. Settings for electric brakes and other info into the unit took under 2 minutes. Wow! What a difference - the braking was strong, smooth and uniform. I can only compare on my vehicle to braking without a controller unit engaging the trailer brakes, but it showed me how important those brakes are to an easy and safe stop. I have driven other people’s trucks with loaded horse trailers, and their controller units did not give anything like the constant readout of trailer brake voltage and other information this one gives you. This is obviously a high quality unit with everything I need and more. My priority is horse safety on the road and that includes smooth, proportional braking. I like the ability to monitor the voltage of the vehicle system, the volts and amps to the trailer, and troubleshooting capabilities. I spent 6 or 8 hours reading everything on brake controllers before ordering this one, and compared it to several other highly-rated units. While it is available for similar pricing from eBay and other sites, I found etrailer.com's website to make things very easy, such as finding the exact Plug-in Adaptor for my vehicle, finding videos about various controllers, and finding instructions for installing the unit. Thanks to the etrailer.com website, I was able to check under my dash to verify the brake controller plug was there waiting to be used, and I had a very realistic idea of the installation procedure in advance. Getting the Plug Adaptor in the same shipment was important too, and let me install it immediately. I was glad I ordered from etrailer.com and would not hesitate to order from them again. 164082

This review was so helpful after all my own research that it helped me feel cofident in my decision to try this connector on my 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the factory tow package. Like she said. It takes longer to decide where to put it than it did to take it out of the box, plug it in and tie the cable neatly in place. One thing that she didnt say is that the sheathing around the 4 wires keeps the bundle as neat and clean as Ive ever seen in a wiring harness.

Still working great. I have not even used all the diagnostic features lately. Trips as far as Orlando to Dallas to Houston and back. No issues, and I have put it on and off about 10 times, ie unplugged it when trailer not hitched. Easy to adjust the boost on the brakes.

This part made it easy to install, and I have unplugged the controller each time I unhitch the trailer, then put it back in, clipping the plug-in adapter to the back and snapping the unit into its bracket, probably 10 times this year. Clicks in great each time, unit works perfectly and I use different boost when horse is not in the trailer, due to change in weight.

This product was a very easy install and initial setup. Only complaint is lack of option when trailer is not hooked up. I would like to present set my boost settings and break output and save them before actually getting hooked to my trailer. Then custom tune it once hooked up. Other than that, everything seems to be top notch. When it came to the install, I chose to stray away from the typical mounting location and go with a point closer on the center console. If not for that the installation of the P3 would have taken less than 5 minutes from start to finish. Truly plug and play. 261544

I ordered the Tekonsha P3 and a wire harness for my 2006 Dodge 1500. The harness matched perfect and took about 10 minutes to attach it and zip tie it down. The P3 bracket took about 15 minutes and I was ready to go. Thank you all at etrailer for having the right info and the right set up for my vehicle. I say that due to getting the wrong wire harness on items I've ordered elsewhere. If I need anything else for my trailers I will use you all again! 748898

  • Parts Needed to Install 7-Way and Brake Controller on a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 with 4-Way
We have exactly what you need to convert the 4-way on your 2000 Dodge Ram to a 7-way and then install your brake controller. For that you would want the part # ETBC7. It comes with everything needed to make the conversion and wire in the brake controller. Now to make the install even easier you will also use the part # 3020-P. This will plug into the port under your dash and all you would need to do is run the wire found under your driver side wheel fender. Usually located under the...

You do not mention whether the 7 way is factory installed. If it is, there should be a plug located behind the parking brake pedal. The connector is typically located just above this box.

  • Brake Controller Recommendation for a 2005 Dodge Ram 2500
For your 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 with the factory 7-Way trailer connector I recommend the Tekonsha P2, # 90885, because its easy to set up and use and it is reliable. This is a proportional controller that will apply the trailer brakes in proportion to how much the Ram is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on the trailer and vehicle brakes. To plug in the controller to your truck you will need wiring harness # 3020-P.
