Question:
I need to install a brake controller in my 2005 Dodge 1500 5.7L SLT 4x4, what controller and adapter? would I need for this? How can I locate the plug under the dash if there is one? I am in California if that makes a difference. Once installed, how do I know if it is working? It will be used to tow a gooseneck 2002 Fleetwood Wilderness Lite 24 5C. Thank you in advance!!

Hey Abby thanks for all the questions! The first thing I need to mention is you will only have a port to plug in a brake controller if your 2005 Dodge 1500 came with either a 4-way connector or a 7-way connector from the factory. If yours has an after market trailer connector you'll need to manually wire a brake controller.
The brake controller port on a 2005 Dodge 1500 is located by the left side firewall. I have attached a picture below along with an installation video so you can find yours.
If you have a factory trailer connector, I recommend the Tekonsha Primus IQ Trailer Brake Controller item # TK68HR. This proportional brake controller will install with the included plug in adapter. The Primus works by slowing or stopping your trailer with the same amount of force your truck is stopping with. This is the safest way to stop, as it is immediate, but also the easiest on both your trailer and truck.
I am a big fan of the Primus IQ item # TK68HR because I have had it for years and have had no issues whatsoever with it. It's affordably priced, doesn't have a bunch of complicated features, and is most importantly reliable.
If you do not have a factory trailer connector you will want the item # TK90160. This is the same Primus IQ brake controller but without the plug in adapter. It includes a universal wiring harness that will need to be spliced into your Dodge's wiring.
There's no California restrictions. You'll need to install the brake controller and plug your trailer into it to know it's working.
If you do not already have a gooseneck hitch, I recommend the B&W Turnoverball w/ Custom Installation Kit item # BWGNRK1316. This fits both the 6-1/2' and 8' bed models and is one of the most reliable systems in the towing industry.
