Bearing Buddy installed diagram

Bearing Buddy Operation

Replace your existing grease cap with a Bearing Buddy to ensure a safe, easy way to monitor and control the level of grease in your axle hub. To adjust the amount of grease in the hub, use a grease gun to add more through the appropriate fitting. Adding grease moves the Bearing Buddy spring-loaded piston outward 1/8".

The O-ring inside the barrel of the Bearing Buddy maintains a seal from the outside. The interior of the Bearing Buddy is pressurized, preventing water from entering the barrel and diluting the grease.

An automatic pressure-relief feature is built into the Bearing Buddy. When the device is full, grease will seep around the edges of the piston and into the barrel. This prevents overfilling that can damage the inner seal.

You can manually check the grease level in your Bearing Buddy by pressing on the edge of the piston. If you can rock or move the piston, the hub is properly filled.

Bearing Buddies are the best invention since the trailer was invented!

by:

Received the Bearing Buddys the following Friday after ordering, very quick delivery. After some fine tuning, they installed very easily. We got out on the water once in July on a Friday and I subsequently had major eye surgery on the following Tuesday. Due that and poor weather, high winds, did not get out for the rest of the year. The hubs have remained dry, and I am hoping to get out fishing in the next couple of weeks as the season has just opened. I will report back in about a month.

by:

Ask the Experts about this Bearing Buddy Trailer Bearings Races Seals Caps

  • How to Remove a Bearing Protector from a Trailer Hub
Bearing protectors like Bearing Buddies are a very tight fit in a hub. If you cannot wiggle it out by hand then using a rubber mallet and tapping it (not hard but firm) first on the left, then the right, then the top, then the bottom, then repeat, will help loosen it up so you can pull it off. I have included a link to a video as well that should help. Removal of the Bearing Buddy takes place right in the beginning of the video.

  • Bearing Buddies Needed for Al-KO 7200 lb Hubs
To determine which Bearing Buddy you need, you'll either need to measure the hub bore (inside diameter of hub where grease cap inserts) or provide me with the outer wheel bearing reference number. With the bearing number, I can find the corresponding race for the bearing. The race's outside diameter will match the diameter of bearing protector you'll need. I would recommend replacing the grease seal as well. Use a double lip seal to help prevent blow-out. To determine which seal you'll...

  • Recommended Bearing Buddy Bearing Protectors For Hub With 2.567" Grease Caps
It sure will! Since your current grease caps measure 2.567" the correct Bearing Buddy Bearing Protectors for your hub will be the # BB2562 which measure 2.562". This is close enough in size that it will work just fine. I included a video of the # BB2562 for you to take a look at.

  • Grease Cap Recommendation for an EZ Lube Spindle
You have EZ-lube spindles so a bearing buddy wouldn't be the right grease cap to use. Easy lube spindles are not compatible with Bearing Buddy Bearing Protectors. You could use the Bearing Buddy Bearing Protectors if you remove the zerk fitting. You really do not need Bearing Buddies though. To pick out the correct grease cap you would need to measure the inside diameter of the hub opening to determine which cap size is needed. You would want to choose a cap whose outside diameter matches...

  • Bearing Buddy to Fit 2.5 inch Hub Bore of Lippert 5,200 lb Axle
Bearing Buddy does make a 2.52 inch option which is part # BB2562SS. These are a great option to make greasing the hubs easier, but you have to be careful not to pump too much grease in the hub as it can blow a seal pretty easily. In a majority of cases where we see someone blow a hub seal quickly after replacing it they used a Bearing Buddy to put too much grease in the hub.

Bearing Buddy protectors are made in lots of sizes, many of which are very close to one another in their diameter. It is really necessary to use a more precise measuring device on the hub's bore unless you know the part number of the one that was lost. You might check the remaining one for any identification. There are two sizes that are close to your 2-9/16-inch dimension, 2.562-inches and 2.717-inches. Bearing Buddy parts that fit hub bore diameter 2.562-inches are either part # BB2562SS...

  • How to Pick Out Bearing Buddy to fit Trailer Hub
The way to pick out Bearing Buddies for a trailer hub is based on the diameter of the bore of the hub where the grease cap fits. If you have 2-1/2 inches you most likely would need the # BB2562 which fits a hub bore of 2.562 inches or the # BB2441 which fits a hub bore of 2.441 inches. Since the measurement needs to be exact you'll want to use a caliper like the # PTW80157.

  • Which Bearing Buddy Will Fit a 2 5/8 Hub Bore
The hub bore of 2 5/8, or 2.625, is kind of an odd size. It puts you in between the Bearing Buddy # BB2562SS, which fits a 2.562 inch hub bore, and the Bearing Buddy # BB2717SS, which fits a 2.717 inch hub bore. That being said. the # BB2562SS is not a common size and is used mostly for agricultural applications. The # BB2717SS is going to be your best bet, but may require a little sanding of either the part of the hub to get everything seated properly.
