Can Over-Under Axle Conversion Kit Be Used with New Axle

Updated 10/21/2024 | Published 10/19/2024

Question:

Hello, I have axles on my cargo trailer. I recently installed the etrailer over under kit where I put the leaf springs on top of the axles. That gave me about an additional 3 1/2 to 4 inches lift. I’m thinking about going with a straight axle. Yours come with, the perchs underneath where the leaf springs will be under slung. Will I lose the height that I gained doing the over slung with the axles? Thank you.

Hey Joe, thanks for reaching out!

All you'll need to do is install the Dexter Axle Over-Under kit you already have along with the replacement axle, like the 3,500 lb etrailer Axle # e43SR, and you will still have that lift on your trailer.

If you're talking about a different style axle please let me know and I'll be more than happy to look further into this for you!

Thanks for your reply. I guess I didn’t state that. I currently have drop axles so that’s why I want to go with straight axles. Now with the drop axles I currently have the over under kit, but I welded the perchs on top so I can’t reuse them. So What I’m asking is will the straight axle give me the same height as I have now with the over under kit on the drop axle. Thanks again.

@Joe Thanks for the clarification. You'll potentially have the same height, but that's something only you can really confirm. What you'll need to do is compare the height of the trailer frame if the center of the tire is located 1-3/16" above where your leaf springs will mount to the axle as opposed to where they are currently located. I don't know the amount of drop that's built into your axle or the height of your leaf spring stack which is why you'll need to compare the dimensions directly on your end.
