With the Rack'Em tailgate lift assist, you can raise and lower your utility trailer's tailgate with a single finger. The double-barrel assist will make a 134-lb gate feel like it weighs only 5 lbs, making it easy for practically anybody to lift or lower.

Installation

Tailgate Assist

The double-barrel unit mounts on one of the side rails of your trailer using 2 of the included bolts. The adjustable mounting bracket then mounts onto the side of your tailgate with the other 2 bolts. Once both pieces are mounted, just choose the adjustment hole you would like to use based the size of your tailgate and clip the chain onto it. The top 3 holes are designed for taller, heavier tailgates, while the bottom 3 holes are for shorter, lighter tailgates. This adjustable design makes the Rack'Em Double Barrel lift assist perfect for any application.

How It Works

The chain that attaches to your tailgate connects to an internal sprocket chain that is in turn hooked to a spring inside the unit. This chain-and-spring combination is what takes on the weight of your tailgate. The first spring connects to a second spring inside the other barrel of the assist using an additional sprocket chain. If extra lifting power is needed, this second spring will automatically engage to help with the load.

Springs

Because this chain-and-spring setup only activates when under load, the system will never be too rigid to manage. As a result, you will always have smooth, consistent, and jerk-free motion regardless of your application.

Video Transcript for Rackem Double Barrel Trailer Tailgate Assist Installation

Today on our utility trailer, we'll be installing the Rackem Double Barrel trailer gate assist, part number RA-27C. To begin with, we will need to go ahead and mark the four holes that we'll need to drill in our trailer, two in the gate where our chain will hook to the support bracket for lifting the gate up and down, and two on the actual side rail of the trailer. Once we have all four holes marked, we'll go ahead and begin drilling. The two gate holes will be a little bit smaller, and we can go ahead and just drill them straight through. Now for the section that has the springs in it that will mount to the side of our trailer, we're going to go ahead and start with the smaller drill bit first, and then go ahead and step up to the actual size. With all the holes drilled, we'll go ahead and mount the double spring mechanism on the side of the trailer.

We'll put the bolt through the top and put the nylon lock nut underneath, tightening it down. With this tightened down, we can go ahead and put our side clamp or our lifting bracket on the trailer gate. Now on this particular trailer, the owner wants to fold the gate all the way forward, so we're going to use a couple spacer blocks to scoot the bracket out from the trailer gate just a little bit. We'll feed our bolt through the bracket, followed by the nylon lock nut. We'll go ahead and tighten everything down then.

Finally, we'll use our quick links and go ahead and connect to the end that has the springs on it, or the end where the chain comes out of it, to that loop. With that hole connected, we'll go ahead and connect to the top hole on the bracket on the trailer gate. This particular trailer gate's a little heavy, so we'll go ahead and use the top hole to begin with. With both of the clips secured, we're ready to go ahead and test our gate. As you can see, it lowers down with ease.

With the gate pulled down and the double barrel hooked up, it takes very little pressure to raise the gate. And with that, that will complete the installation of the Rackem Double Barrel trailer gate assist, part number RA-27C, on our utility trailer. .

Would not work on my trailer. After installation and making no marks on the product I was not able to return it. So I wasted that money. I went back to the gorilla lift. 669573

The Rack-em lift is excellent. Really like this tailgate lift assist. Prefer the roller chain system over cables Easy install on round tube trailer rails. Much simpler than the two side lift setup. Took a little try & see to adjust for tension. Price, ordering & shipping was good. Will recommend this item to friends 614192

Purchased this product over the Gorilla assist because they had a video on how to install, looked easy so I ordered it. I have a landscape trailer with 2" square tube and not angel iron as the one in the video. The hardware supplied was to short since the were 2" long bolts, had to buy 3" bolts and a eye bolt for the tailgate since my trailer has handles on the side where the tailgate plate was supposed to go. Call the company for and idea of how high to mount the eye bolt but the person was of little help and was kind of gruff about the whole thing. This company needs to include bigger hardware since most of the trailers I looked at had 2" square tubing frames. It's installed and works OK. 161267

This product is everything it was advertised to be. The mounting was easy and when done the gate went down with no effort and went without slamming. On raising it there was hardly any effort compared to lifting the same gate with out it. My trailer back vertical post on the rail is a couple inches higher than the horizontal mounting side rail and the chain slid over it with no problem. I did treat the chain with some spray on chain wax which is used on any chain driven motorcycle just to lube the chain instead of using it dry. This is the best investment for us older guys. 394890

The RA-27C gate lift assist arrived on time. After installation, our customer was satisfied with the lift assist. We extended the tail gate ramp on his trailer so he could ride his Honda Goldwing Motor Trike up the ramp which is slightly over 5 feet long and 5 feet wide and is constructed of steel. It and weighs about 350 pounds holds a 1500 pound trike without any problems . We installed 2 of the RA-27C lift assists and it is very easy to handle this very heavy tail gate. This should give him many years of trouble free service and ease of operation. 485138

This is a very good product. I choose this product because of ease of installation and cost. I had read other reviews and liked what I saw. I thought about the gorilla lift but didn’t want to go thru the hassle of installation. The Double Barrel system works flawless. Installation only took about 45 mins at the most. This really helped me out a lot because, my trailer gate is very heavy and a pain to pick up. I run a small Lawncare company so I’m always letting the gate up and down. So this was a must in my eyes. I decided to do what I saw another person did and that was u a eye bolt instead of the plate and it worked great. I’m very happy with my purchase and know it is going to last along time. 444606

I got my Rack'em double barrel gate assist a few days ago and installed it. My trailer has 16 inch side rails which I was told is too high for it to work properly so I ended up welding a piece of angle iron to the outside of my trailer rails at 13 inches high to solve that problem. This actually worked out better anyway as it puts the doublebarrel down out of harms way and left my top rail unobstructed for my hedge trimmer mount. I had a garage door spring mounted in this location and it worked well for 20 years but the double barrel works much better. It can be adjusted so that the gate requires zero effort to lift and it also does not slam the gate closed if I don't hold onto it past the halfway point or let the gate slam to the ground if I let go of it below the halfway point...it just works perfect! It makes no annoying noises like the competing trailer gate assist units on the market do and is quite a bit shorter overall...Surprisingly, it's actually among the cheaper options in this category too. Build quality seems good...The only concern I have is with the size of roller chain they used, I'm sure they've tested it extensively and determined that what they used is strong enough but I would feel more comfortable with a little larger size roller chain. Just a suggestion to the manufacturer if they happen to see this. Can't say how it will hold up long term but initial impressions are great. 175260

Vanessa, You were very professional– knowledgeable, easy to understand, and polite. The product was at a good price with free shipping, and I received it in 4 days. All a plus. The etrailer video showed a simple installation with one finger lifting, and also the gate staying in a holding position between all the way up and all the way down. My installation was simple, but I have an angle-iron constructed gate and it was easier to use an eye-bolt in place of the provided bracket to better line-up the chain. To take up the chain slack and preload the springs I moved the chain clip to a different link, but the lifting takes more than a finger and it will fall. The Rack’em Double Barrel Trailer Tailgate Assist does help to lift the gate but doesn’t do it with the ease of one finger as shown in the video. If you have any suggestions they are welcome. Thanks. 541695

I am very pleased with this product. I have installed this on my split tailgate and it works flawlessly. I have another trailer with the gorilla tailgate assists on both sides. I would pick the RA-27C double barrel over the gorilla springs, hands down. I have included some pics to help anyone else with a split tailgate. This is what I came up with and it works great! 418307

Got the product 2 days ago & just got done mounting it on my trailer today. Pretty simple installation went on good. It does make the trailer tailgate Much lighter then what it was! My only problem during the mounting of the product was I had to make some shims on the bracket that goes on the tailgate itself. With out doing this the bolts didn't have enough threads to completely tighten the bracket. And with out doing this the tailgate bracket would have not been in a straight enough line to match up with the sprocket Assy on the trailer itself. Like I said just got done with it today. So far I am very happy with this product & I would recommend it for someone else! Thanks!! 498024

Great product. Makes the gate on my 14’ trailer basically weightless. The gate can open and closed with one finger. It also make the trailer a lot safer around small children because you don’t have to worry about the gate falling on one of them. 673922

This tail gate assist on my trailer really makes raising and lowering the tail gate/ramp very easy to raise and lower. I have had surgery on both shoulders and before I installed the assist it was almost imposable to raise the ramp. Now I can raise with one hand almost one finger. I purchased 2 assist and gave one to a friend and he is just as pleased as I am. Great tail gate assist. DJ 572848

Product delivered quickly. Installation very easy. Would be nice if they included shorted bolts, or bolts that were threaded all the way. If your attaching power plate to angle iron the provided bolts don't work. Otherwise lift works great. 566873

Probably not for use in cold climates. Worked well in spring, summer, early fall however at lower temps (sub freezing) becomes to stiff to operate. Had to remove the clip that attaches one end to the tailgate for operation in the winter. 563506

Perfect addition to my trailer. I don't care how many times I have to put the ramp up and down now. Nice paint finish, well built and easily installed. Prompt shipping and follow-up e-mails. Will continue to buy from E-Trailer. 551126

Tailgate assist works very well. However, as in other reviews, the box it was shipped in was in very bad condition and the bag of accessories was missing. To their credit they were replaced very quickly. As to quality, the main unit works great but was disappointed to find that both the roller chain and the link chain started to rust immediately. I hope that is not a problem in the future. All in all, I would still recommend it to friends. 524902

For a trailer gate that weighs more than 300 lbs, I recommend using two of the Rack'Em Double Barrel Utility Trailer Tailgate Lift Assist w/ Chain - 200 lbs # RA-27C.
