Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Difference Between Trailer Tire Sizes 165/65-8 and 4.80-8
The tire size 165/65-8 is .4 of an inch taller than the 4.80-8 tire size and fits a rim almost two inches wider. The sizes are very similar but the 165/65-8 size is a bit different. Either size tire requires a different width rim. We have replacements on rims like the part # AM3H200 for if you have a 4 bolt wheel or part # AM3H220 if you have a 5 bolt wheel.

  • Replacement Trailer Tire and Wheel for Size 5.7-8 with 65 mph Speed Rating
Hey Jonathan, the next size up from what you have now that's not overly big and wide would be the 165/65-8 like the part # AM3H200 that is mounted on a 4 lug wheel or the part # AM3H220 that is mounted on a 5 lug wheel. This is rated for up to 65 mph which is probably pretty close to what you have now but you'd need to check. We don't have a tire near this size that is going to have a higher speed rating though. Worth mentioning is that there isn't a larger tire size that fits the rim...

  • Best Replacement 4.80-8 Tire for a Boat Trailer
Hey David. The Kenda 215/60-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 item # AM3H323 is going to be a bit bigger but it might still be able to replace your 4.80-8 tire with a 5 on 4-1/2 lug pattern. A 4.80-8 tire is going to measure 16.14" x 4.72". A 215/60-8 tire measures 18.1" x 8.9" wide. This means you're going to need an extra 2.09" between the closest portion of your trailers frame and the back of your current 4.80-8 tire and an extra 1" between the bottom of your fender...

  • Recommended Wheel Tire Combo w/ Less then 18 Inch Diameter for Storing a Trailer
The closest wheel tire combo we have to 18" in overall diameter without going over is the Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire item # AM3H220. It is 16-1/2", has a 8" white wheel, with a 5 on 4-1/2 lug pattern. This wheel tire combo has a 800 lbs capacity each so two of them will give you plenty of capacity for your 1,400 lbs trailer while sitting in storage.

  • Can I Upgrade to a Load Range D Tire Size 165/65-8
I may have a potential solution for you, but the tire size 165/65-8 is only available in load range C. To step up in load range, you will have to switch to tire size 215/60-8 Tire and Wheel # AM3H325 or 5.70-8 # AM30155 which are both slightly larger in diameter by about 1-1/2 inch and the 215/60-8 tire # AM3H325 is about 2 inches wider while the 5.70-8 tire # AM30155 is about 1/2 inch narrower. With the size difference, you will just need to make sure you have the clearance available...

  • What Is The Smallest Available Radial Trailer Tire?
We do have several 215/60-8 tires like the # AM3H323 but nothing in a radial. The smallest radial tire that we stock is a 145/80-12 in part # AM31202. This would be a fairly significant change in tire size. The 215/60-8 measure about 18.1" in diameter and 8.9" wide. The 145/80-12 measure about 21.3" diameter and 5.7" wide. It really comes down to how much clearance you have in your wheel well. Going to larger tires is possible, but we have to have at least 3" of clearance between the...

  • Mounting Tool Box and Changing to Larger Tires on Lees-ure Lite Camper
You could potentially mount a trailer tongue toolbox like the White Buyers Products # 3371701679 to a pole tongue like what's on your Lees-ure Lite Camper but it's going to require some custom/fabricated brackets. You would need to first come up with a plate wide enough to support the toolbox base and then either bolt or weld it to the tongue. Honestly your best option to create some more cargo space for tools or other items would be to mount a small chest or even a cargo bag like the...

  • Can Smaller Wheels and Tires be Installed on a Jet Ski Trailer to Lower It
The backspacing is not really the issue, it is the tire width on your current versus new tires. Most trailer tires have a zero offset meaning the mounting surface of the wheel is in the center of the wheel so the tire width becomes important. A 175/80-13 tire that you currently have is about 6.9 inches wide and 24.1 inches tall. A 205/65-10 like # AM3H390, is 8.3 inches wide and 20.5 inches tall. Regarding tires, this is a huge difference in width and you would have to measure the distance...

  • 16.5 x 6.5 -8 Trailer Tire Availability
The size 165/65-8 is the modern size name for your 16.5 x 6.5 -8 so we have exactly what you would need. If you have a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern wheel currently you would want the part # AM3H200. If you have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern you would want the part # AM3H220 instead.

  • Recommended Replacement Tires for 1976 Coleman Patriot Pop-Up Camper
The Kenda Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire - 165/65-8 - Load Range C # AM1HP22 is the closest size to the dimensions given by Coleman. These tires will have an outer diameter to 16.5 inches a width of 6.6 inches, and will fit 8 x 5-3/8 inch wheels. They are rated for 800 lbs at 70 psi which they should be inflated to when cold (prior to trip) and have a max speed of 65 mph. For complete tire and wheel assemblies, I recommend the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM30140. These will be almost the same height and will be almost 3 inches thinner than your current tires. The load capacity is 910 lbs at 75 psi, so you actually gain a little capacity with this change. • Trailer Tire that is Narrower than Size 18.5x8.5-8
We have a narrower wheel and tire that is similar to what you have now with the size 16.5x6.5-8 which is the same as the modern size 165/65-8. For this mounted on a 4 lug wheel you'd want # AM3H200 or for a 5 lug # AM3H220. This would give you right at one more inch of clearance between the frame and the tire.

I have the Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire, # AM1HP22, in the 165/65-8 size and it is a load range C tire with a maximum load of 800 lbs. at 70 psi. If you have a 4 on 4" bolt pattern then I recommend the Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel part # AM3H200 but if you have a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern then I recommend the Kenda 165/65-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel part # AM3H220.

I wouldn't recommend it. The 4.80x8 tire is designed to be used on a 3-3/4 in wide rim, while the 165/65-8 is compatible with a 5-3/8 inch wide rim. We sell the 165/65-8 tire as a wheel/tire combo, available on a 4 on 4 bolt pattern as part # AM3H200 or a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern white powder coated wheel as part # AM3H220. While it certainly is possible to replace a 5.70 x 8 tire/wheel with a 165/65-8 tire/wheel with the same 5 bolt pattern, there really is no advantage in doing so. The 165/65-8 tires are 1.5" smaller in diameter, and would have a lower max load rating than a 5.70 x 8. So unless your goal is to go with a smaller, lower rated tire, I suggest sticking with the 5.70 x 8 tires.
