Double-Eye Leaf Spring Basics

Leaf springs, as you probably know, make up an important part of your trailer's suspension. Their main purpose is to absorb road shock as you travel, as well as allow your axle(s) to move independently of the rest of the trailer.

Double-Eye Spring Parts

To mount this leaf spring, you'll need hangers welded onto your trailer frame - which you probably already have in place - as well as shackle straps and a suspension bolt. It's a good idea to replace your existing straps and bolt while you're under there working on things because they tend to wear out quickly. One thing that could help keep them from wearing out too fast would be upgrading to galvanized or zinc-plated hardware. Doing so will boost the corrosion resistance and, therefore, the longevity of your trailer.

We also always recommend replacing both of your springs at the same time because it's not unusual for leaf springs to sag and elongate over time. If you replace just the one, there's a good chance that it won't match your existing spring on the opposite side of your trailer, and that can mess up your alignment.

  • Recommended Replacement Leaf Springs For Fifth Wheel Trailer
You do want to measure the springs with the weight off of them because they will flatten out with the weight added. Over time, springs can flatten a bit and that is why you are getting the 26 inch measurement. Based on the measurements you provided, I recommend going with part # e34SR. This is a 5-leaf spring and is designed for 6,000-lb axles. You also want to check the rest of your suspension to make sure everything is in good working order.

  • How to Select Replacement Leaf Springs for 5th Wheel Trailer
It does sound like you have found some clear damage to your 5th wheel trailer's leaf springs that will require attention. Uneven tire wear can be caused by a number of things - incorrect pressure, inadequate weight on the axle or a visibly damaged component like a leaf spring that has allowed the suspension geometry to change. It sounds like the broken driver-side spring is letting the axle hang too low on that side, which brings the tire's outside edge into more contact with the road...

  • Recommended Shackle Straps and Hangers for a Single Axle Trailer
I would be happy to help but first you will want to take some measurements of the hangers and shackle straps you currently have to determine which ones you'll need. Longer or shorter on the shackle straps and hangers will change the ride height of your trailer. The Dexter Heavy Duty Suspension Upgrade Kit for Single Axle Trailers item # K71-358-00 would work great with the 5-Leaf Double-Eye Spring item # e34SR you're purchasing. The included shackle straps have a length from center of...

  • How Much Clearance is Needed to Account for Suspension Travel on a Trailer
We usually tell people to look for about 3 inches of clearance to account for the total travel capabilities of trailer suspension. If you have less than 3 inches you might be able to compensate by using slightly longer shackle straps. I have included a link to the shackle straps we carry.

  • Do Trailer Leaf Springs Have to Face a Certain Direction
The clip that goes around 3 of the leaves of the 5-Leaf Spring part # e34SR that you referenced can go either in front of the axle or behind it. Either way would be perfectly fine. I attached an FAQ on trailer suspension for you to check out as well.

  • 2008 Jayco Jayflight 32BHDS Leaf Spring Replacement
I can see what the best possible cushioned equalizer would be for your trailer but I don't have a way to look up what you have or see how far off the # K71-564-00 would be from it working. What dimensions do you have?As far as the leaf spring is concerned 25-1/4 inch would be the better option. What capacity are you looking for.

  • Replacement Leaf Springs for Pair of 6,000 lb Axles
If you are measuring your current leaf springs and are getting 26 inches from the center of the spring eye to the center of the spring eye and they are older springs it makes sense that they were originally about an inch less than that because springs will flatten out over time. The best option we carry for your trailer is the 5-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 6,000 lb Trailer Axles # e34SR which measures 25-1/4" long from center eye to center eye. You do not want your springs to go over the...

  • Replacing Leaf Springs And U-Bolts On A 2021 Grand Design 31MB
The 5-Leaf Double-Eye Spring # e34SR will be a good replacement for your 2021 Grand Design 31MB, provided the stock leaf spring is also 25-1/4" long. The suspension is all designed based on a specific length of spring, so it is critical that the replacement springs are identical in size to the stock springs. A 5-leaf 6,000 rated spring will definitely give you more support than the 4-leaf 5,200 lb springs. It is possible that you will need longer U-bolts, but it really depends on how...

  • Dexter EZ Flex Equalizers for 6,000 Pound Axles on a 2006 Heartland Bighorn 5th Wheel
The length is good on the EZ Flex system # K71-653-00 but the height may be different depending on where you are measuring that 4-3/4 inches. On the EZ Flex the distance from the center of the mounting hole to the center line between the 2 bottom holes, straight up and down, is 2-7/8 inches. If your 4-3/4 inch measurement is diagonal then you will be good to go with this kit. For a u-bolt kit you can use # APUBR-9. The shocks might actually feel more effective with the EZ Flex kit installed....

  • Choosing the Correct Replacement Leaf Springs for a Weekend Warrior Toy Hauler
In order to choose the correct replacement leaf springs for a trailer you'll need to know both the unloaded length and axle capacity. The number of springs is not relevant so long as you choose a set that matches the axle capacity as springs can have different thicknesses therefore different weight capacities not necessarily dependent on the number of leaves. A few other things to keep in mind is that leaf springs can lengthen over time and you need to replace them in pairs. I have attached...

  • Do 3,500 lb Trailer Axles and 5,200 lb Axles Use Same Hub/Drums and Brake Assemblies
The hub/drum/brake assembly components are a totally different size between a 3,500 lb axle and a 5,200 lb axle. You can easily swap to the 5,200 lb axle like the part # 8327816 but you will need new hub/drums like the # 8-201-5UC3-EZ which has a 12 inch diameter (3,500 lb setups are 10 inch), and then for brake assemblies # 23-464-465 for a left and right hand side. This setup will require wheels that have a 6 on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern which you may or may not already have.

Hey Shawn, so we can definitely help but you will have to measure your current springs to get right length as we don't have a way to look that info up. Here are the sizes we carry: part # e34SR for 25-1/4 inch part # e94SR 26 inch part # e47sr 25-1/8 part # DX65CR 25-3/8 inch Keep in mind that springs tend to stretch over time so you'd want to go with one just a little shorter.

  • Rebuilding a Tandem Axle Trailer with 6,000 Lb - 7,200 Lb Axles
I would love to help but are you sure that you have space to lower the trailer 4" - 6"? You will need at least 3" from the top of the tire to the bottom of the fender in order to allow for proper suspension travel. It looks like the fenders on the trailer now will not allow for this therefore I would you to do some measuring before any of the new parts are purchased. I would also need more info on the trailer such as axle capacity (see center label), leaf spring length (eye to eye), leaf...

  • Replacement Leaf Springs For A Trailer With 8-Leaf Leaf Springs
Hey Cody, The amount of leafs in the spring isn't as big as factor as you'd think. The more leafs the softer the progression will be when the spring is compressing. Less leafs will give you a stiff progression as the spring compresses. When you measured from center to center on your eyelets did you lift the trailer and allow the axle to hang to take the weight of the springs? If not, you'll need to so that you can get an accurate measurement. Once we have that measurement we'll also...

Hey Tait thanks for the information! I recommend upgrading your Hemco springs with our 5-Leaf Double-Eye Spring for 6,000-lb Trailer Axles item # e34SR. These are 5-leaf springs with a 6,000 lbs capacity. When you swap out your leaf springs, you'll also want to switch out your hardware as those wet bolts are only meant to be torqued down once. • Help Picking Out Replacement Trailer Leaf Spring for Spring that Measures 26 inches Long With Load
I need two things to help you pick out the correct leaf springs for your trailer. I need to know the axle capacity of your trailer as well as the length from eye to eye without a load on your trailer. With those two pieces of info I can help you pick out the correct springs. A likely candidate for what you need is the part # e54SR which is for the very popular axle capacity of 3,500 lb and is 25-1/8 inches long. This would be about the right length when your spring doesn't have a load...

  • What is the Minimum Space Between Tires on a Tandem Axle Trailer
I checked with Dexter, manufacturer of many trailer parts, and according to them there should be at least 1 inch of space between the tires when under load. So once your trailer is loaded and ready to tow, if you have more than 1 inch of space between the tires then going to the larger size would work. You also have to consider the additional width of the larger tire and the additional height. the new larger size will be 3.2 inches taller and 1.25 inches wider than your existing tire size....

  • Is it Okay to Tow a Trailer without Fenders
I wouldn't worry about the trailer not having fenders. I've pulled a few enclosed trailers that were missing fenders and it didn't affect anything that I noticed. If you get a puddle or it starts raining the tires will fling water so it might not be as clean but you'd be fine.

  • Cushioned Equalizer Upgrade Recommendation for 2012 Forest River Work and Play
Mark, the Dexter EZ Flex part # K71-652-00 can be used to replace your # TREQ310 and is cushioned like you are wanting. The 25-1/4 inch leaf spring size is very common but you didn't mention what axle capacity you have so if you needed a 5k spring you'd part # e44sr, 4k axle part # e57SR, or 6k axle part # e34SR. Keep in mind going with a little higher of a capacity than needed is perfectly fine.

  • How to Measure for Replacement Leaf Spring on Jayco Eagle 5th Wheel
I would expect the eye to eye measurement to be shorter when you take the weight off of the leaf spring. It is hard to say how much shorter but 3/4" is certainly possible. Even if you remove the weight it will be longer than it was originally since they wear out over time so you need to account for that. What I would do is take the flat measurement so you don't have to guess. For double-eye leaf springs, measurements are usually taken from the middle of the center bolt to the middle of...
