Features to know about

Upgrade Old Drums for Stronger, Smoother Stopping: 13" Dacromet Disc Brake Kit

Switching to discs is the biggest brake upgrade you can make. This Kodiak 13" disc brake kit fits 7,000-lb axles and delivers shorter stopping distance and more consistent braking than drum setups. The Dacromet-plated cast iron rotors, calipers, and brackets fight corrosion in freshwater or saltwater use with a 300- to 400-hour salt-spray rating. You’ll feel the difference in smooth, even braking at highway speeds and lower maintenance over time thanks to fewer moving parts.

Easy DIY Conversion: Slip-On, Over-the-Hub Rotors

If you like doing your own trailer work, these slip-on rotors make the upgrade simple. They fit over standard idler hubs and are held in place by your wheel and wheel bolts—no need to replace the hub. Each rotor removes easily for service, so you can repair or replace parts without junking the whole assembly. Installation adds only about 1/2" of track width from hub face to hub face.

Built to Stay Cool and Stop Hard: Vented Rotors and Cast Iron Calipers

Long grades and heavy loads create heat, but the vented rotor design keeps temperatures down to prevent fade or damage. Cast iron calipers resist flexing for more braking torque and even pad wear, while the low-drag setup retracts the piston farther for cooler, smoother operation. The stainless steel piston is 2-1/4" in diameter—30 percent larger than others—for higher braking torque and shorter stops.

Strong, Secure Mounting You Can Trust: Ductile Iron Brackets with Side Support

The included ductile iron mounting brackets are made for 5-bolt brake flanges and feature a side-support design that puts the load on the bracket instead of the bolts. Extra embossing gives more thread contact for secure caliper mounting. That means solid, rattle-free braking performance every time you hit the pedal.

Complete Axle Upgrade Kit: Ready to Bolt On

Everything you need for one axle comes in the box—two Dacromet-plated rotors, two calipers, two ductile iron mounting brackets, and four stainless caliper bolts. The kit works with 16" and larger wheels and an 8 on 6-1/2" bolt pattern with 9/16" wheel bolts. It’s covered by a 3-year warranty and requires a hydraulic actuator rated at least 1,500 psi (sold separately).

Video Transcript for All You Need to Know About the Kodiak Disc Brakes

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Kodiak line of Disc Brake Kits. Now, these kits are available in multiple configurations to fit multiple size axles. They're also available in several different finishes.A disc brake kit like this one from Kodiak is an excellent solution to give us good braking force. Typically, for this kit anyway, you're looking at like a 3500-pound axle. A lot of boat applications, you're hauling a boat sometimes miles and miles and miles, and without brakes on your trailer, you put a lot of unnecessary stress and strain on your truck. A braking kit like this allows us to take the stress, the strain off the braking system on our truck but also gives us a safer ride.In this application we've got a surge coupler at the front of the trailer, so as the truck slows it applies the hydraulic fluid pressure, squeezing our caliper together giving us excellent stopping abilities.

The rotors, calipers, and the ceramic pads are all automotive grade, so they're going to be made to the highest standards being sure we get excellent braking capabilities. Now when we compare a disc brake kit like this to a hydraulic drum-style brake, there are several advantages. Of course, we all know disc brakes tend to work better than drum brakes. They lock up less. We typically don't have the moisture being held inside. Especially in a marine application, that hub fills up with water, that moisture stays inside, causes some corrosion issues.

In this situation, once we bring these out of the water, everything's going to drain away. Air can get to it very readily and dry everything up.Another advantage we're going to get with this particular kit over the other disc brake kits available, the material composition is very corrosion-resistant. Our rotor, caliper, all stainless steel, plus they take that a step further, put a Dacramet finish all the way around. So that's going to work out really well, especially in a marine application like this, but also just on a utility trailer, keeping everything nice, corrosion-free. It's also going to be an excellent, excellent choice if you use it in a saltwater-type application.Something else you'll notice, pretty common on automobile applications, not usually on trailers, is going to be the ventilated rotor here.

So you've got two wear surfaces here and here. Those are going to be separated to allow air to flow freely in there and get everything cooled off to give us premium braking performance every time we hit those brakes. All right. With the bracket installed, we can move onto installing our rotor. That's one of the big benefits I like about this kit. You don't have the whole disc with the hub assembly in it.

So if you ever need to replace the disc, you're just replacing the disc, not your entire hub. This is going to fit right on our idler hub just like that, very common on automobile applications. They call this more like a top hat rotor where it it slides over your lugs, and then your wheel is actually going to hold that in and flush.Next, we'll move on to getting our caliper installed. Now the calipers can go either side. You don't have to have a left and a right. You can see we've got a bleeder screw on both sides. We want, of course, for our hydraulic connection to be facing in. Our slide bolts are going to come in this way just like that, and then these two portions are going to go on the back side of our bracket. So we slide that over, bring it in, and then we'll just push our bolts in, line them up with our holes and get them started. Now those do have loctite on them, so you'll just get them started a little bit, and then we'll use a 13mm socket and snug them on down. Now that we've got those snugged down, we'll use our torque wrench and we're going to torque them down to the specifications listed in the instructions. With our brake assemblies in place, it's time at this point to install our tire back on. Now, we do recommend using a torque wrench and torquing these down properly per the 1/2" stud application. Something we've seen, especially in the automobile industry, if you tighten these lug nuts down too much, you might cause that rotor to warp a little, decreasing your performance. That's going to complete our look at the Kodiak line of Disc Brake Kits.

Customer I installed it for says that the brakes work way better than the old drum set up that came on the Rockwell axle.

by:

Excellent experience all the way around! Fast shipping. Simple installation. Great instructions and videos. Reasonable prices. The best part though is the customer service. I ended up speaking to William B a couple times and he guided me thought ordering exactly the right thing. He had me confirm various measurements on my trailer to ensure I had the correct parts. Actually he helped me discover that the parts I was removing were incorrect so if we had of replaced like for like I would have had problems. Getting this right up front made the installation and final quality what it should be. Thank you eTrailer and thank you William!

Exactly what I bought and expected. Short ship time with two heavy boxes. Nice job!

Bought Kodiak full kit of rotors, calipers, and primary hydraulic actuator from eTrailer for my triple axle boat trailer and perfect result. Competitor was couple dollars cheaper, but couldn't answer simple product questions and squirrely about delivery details, and I don't have patience for that crap. Let's go eTrailer!

Nice replacement for older Kodiak disc brakes. The quality looks like it's pretty good, but only time will tell since. The kit was simple to install if you already have similar style setup and axle mounting bracket.

This disc brake kit - Kodiak Disc Brake Kit - 10" Rotor - 5 on 4-1/2 - Dacromet - 3,500 lbs was used with the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator w/ Electric Lockout - Disc - Zinc - 2" Ball - 7,000 lbs

A couple of years after purchasing my boat I realized the the brake calipers on my boat trailer had seized. As a result the rotors were rusty and pitted. I selected this kit on etrailer because it had great reviews and was in the price range I had budgeted. The kit was easy to install and had great instructions. Towing my boat is actually a positive experience now that it has properly functioning brakes!

E trailers website provides enough info for me to find the exact product I need and the billing and shipping info is excellent. I will be going back for parts in the future!

by:

Paired this set of brakes with a HydraStar electric over hydraulic actuator for a cargo trailer that did not have brakes. Very satisfied with the quality look and performance so far. This set up will lesson the load on my truck/camper and allow for a more relaxed ride knowing I have additional stopping power. The instructions & available online information at Etrailer made it pretty simple. I expect these to perform as intended for many years. Etrailer was a great choice for me.

I just replaced the brakes on my trailer with this, Kodiak Disc Brake Kit in Dacromet. It replaces the same kit but in plain black E-coat finish. The only reason was a few years ago I lost a hub and left 1 disc covered in grease and when I replaced the hubs on that axle (on the side of the road) I disconnected the brake system to simplify things. It's sat for the last 2-3 years for the most part so instead of cleaning up the others and just replacing discs, a bracket, pads etc. and having to clean the calipers good, I decided it was wiser to start from scratch for not much more cost. I'm glad I did. I feel better with a new brake system, the Dacromet finish should do very well (although the E-coat didn't show any issues). The kit was easy to install and get going and works great.

Not that it's important, and wasn't the reason, but it looks good too. I also replaced all wheels and tires with A21514RTM45SM and when I got back from the first road test, I was pleasantly surprised about how good the wheels and brakes looked as I inspected everything. Having the light color finish made it much easier to see when working under the trailer where it's darker also. Just a bonus! And once again, eTrailer couldn't be beat for cost and quick delivery!

Last year, I had to rebuild my Myco triple axel trailer that sits under my 47' Fountain. Needed all new hubs, bearings, brakes, etc. Bought everything from etrailer.com for a 1/3rd of the price that Myco wanted to charge me. Everything was perfect and their customer service was excellent when I had questions. Had some parts that got damaged in transit, but they shipped replacements immediately with no questions asked. The Dacromet brake kits have held up well a year later despite being used in salt water about a dozen times. Very happy with this product.

by:

nice product good pricing ,quick shipping, only problem is the condition of the 2 boxes.

by:

The brakes fit my 2006 Ranger boat trailer, w 15 in tires, I like this style of brake for one reason, the disc just fits over the hub and there is no messing with bearing and getting greasy.

by:

Finished drum to disc brake conversion on my 1993 year model Bass Cat trailer. Installation went smoothly and the UFP-A60 Actuator replaced the obsolete Atwood Actuator. Shortened the outer member a bit and added a 1" flat bar to the bottom for welding of 4" channel trailer frame.

by:

Kit is good quality but does not coming with mounting bolts for the brackets and nowhere does it say that it needs to be purchased.

by:

Straight forward installation although wish the installation nuts & bolts to mount the caliper brackets would have been included in the kit. Especially like the greater piston size and fact that they pull back after braking so the pads are not dragging on rotor when not braking.
Vastly improved braking and stopping distance over the old electric brakes.

by:

Nice quality caliper/Disc set.

Hard
to find a setup that has rotors without the Hub and Disc as a one piece unit.

This Kodiak has a few configuration options for a separate Disc Rotor.

Only one problem is that the shipping container had no packing for the protection of the components.

The brake caliper hose fittings had broken through the boxes and were exposed outside the packaging. The seal plugs had fallen out of the brass caliper connections.

This is a less than acceptable and desirable way to protect the units.

I have a 2011 Lund impact 1775 on a Shorelander single axle trailer which tips the scale around 2500# dry. I felt that surge brakes would be a smart investment and take some pressure off my Ford F150 to help stop that beast. I researched kits, actuators, calipers and rotors and decided on the Kodiak caliper and rotor kit and the Titan actuator. eTrailer had both in stock, a convenient hose kit to boot and fair price so I purchased the lot from them. Delivery was very quick and all of the hardware arrived together and in good shape. It took me one afternoon to assemble the actuator on my swing \-away tongue and another to install the calipers and rotors. There was one snag with the hose kit, in that one of the hoses was incorrect. I contacted Bryan at eTrailer and he was very accommodating; rushing the correct hose to me and then following up by phone when I received it. It took about two hours to finish the installation and I couldn't be more pleased, both with the quality of the products and the first-rate service! I have yet to bleed the system and take it out for a run but I don't anticipate any issues. I fully recommend eTrailer, their products and service!

I used this kit to add surge brakes to my 5200#-axle boat trailer. I bought it a couple months ago and it did not have brakes but really should have. The parts are well made and installed easily once I acquired the bolts I needed that weren't included. The description and pictures are not 100% clear that the mounting bolts to put the brackets on the trailer brake flange are not included. I'm not sure why they don't come with the kit but I ended up getting some 1.25" x 3/8" SS bolts to mount them. While the hat-style rotors are nice from a price and ease of replacement perspective, if your lug bolts don't have extra length, you would be better off getting the integral hub and rotor version. Finding longer lug studs for my 20 year old trailer and removing the old ones was a PITA. Had I known, I would have spent the extra $ for the integrated hub/rotor set. The calipers have bleeding screws on both top and bottom so they can be mounted on either side of the trailer. That's a nice feature as its one less thing to go wrong.
Once installed with new actuator coupler and brake lines, the brakes made a huge difference in towing the boat. The boat alone is 3000# and the trailer and gear probably add another 750 or so. It used to push my Yukon XL around when braking but now it tows smooth and easy.
etrailers was awesome to work with. Good communication via email and simple fast ordering and shipping. I will definitely use them for future trailers get needs.

I love the multiple options from Etrailer. I originally ordered the complete Hydrastar Hydraulic brake kit. I needed to replace one of the hubs and rotors and found it a better deal to buy the idle hubs and this kit. Glad to see Etrailer gives you options and not just one choice!!

  • Hub, Slip On Rotor Kit Recommendation for 7k Timbren Axle Less Kit
The trailer hub part # AKIHUB-865-7-1-K does fit the Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System # TASR7KS01 that you mentioned. Then when you want to use a slip on disc brake kit you'd want the part # K2R79D which will fit and work well with this setup. It's designed for 9/16 inch studs as well which are going to be a bit stronger. We don't have any options that use lug bolts instead of lug nuts at this time.
