Disc Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Disc brakes deliver consistent braking - even at highway speeds - unlike drum brakes, which often show a substantial drop in braking torque at higher speeds. In addition, disc brakes offer a substantially shorter stopping distance than drum brakes.

Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, rather than the many found in drum brakes. This means that there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged and fewer parts to have to repair or replace, thus reducing maintenance costs.

Over-the-Hub Rotor

Kodiak's slip-on, cast iron rotor makes it easy to convert an idler axle to a disc brake axle. Simply place the rotor over your hub. It is most often wheel bolt piloted for a loose fit and then held in place by the wheel itself. With a separate rotor and hub, you can easily repair or replace one element of your brake system without having to junk the whole thing.


Kodiak calipers are constructed of cast iron to prevent flexing. Less flex means more braking torque, resulting in smooth, even braking every time. The corrosion-resistant stainless steel piston is 30 percent larger than standard pistons, ensuring shorter stopping distance and increased torque. In addition, the unique low-drag design of Kodiak's calipers allows the piston to retract farther than in most standard models, giving you a cooler-running brake.

Mounting Brackets

Designed for axles with a 5-bolt brake flange configuration, the included mounting brackets are made of heavy-duty ductile iron that is embossed to provide additional threading for guide bolts. The added thread strength ensures a tighter, more secure connection between the caliper and bracket. Another unique feature of Kodiak's brackets is the side-support angle, which guarantees that the load is carried by the bracket, rather than the bolts.

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Kodiak line of disc brake kits. These are designed to fit the XL-Lube, the Never Lube, Nev-R-Lube by Dexter, and the XL-Lube 2 Hub. These have been designed with an 8 on 6 1/2" bolt pattern, available with 9/16 or 1/2" studs.Now the Kodiak disc brake kit is going to be the perfect solution for upgrading your camper from the standard traditional electric drum style brakes. These are going to allow us to use hydraulic pressure and just like the calipers on our cars, they're going to squeeze the rotors here. That's what's going to bring us to a stop rather than the shoes trying to push out. This is going to give us superior braking performance.

Also, something that's going to be much smoother. These are going to release better, relieving the tension so it's going to roll a little bit more freely but when it's time for the braking power, we're going to have everything we need, especially with this ceramic brakes that are here against our 13" rotor.Now the big advantage and the reason you're going to see most of the customers going with the disc brakes over the electric brakes is going to be simply because of the performance that you get out of them. The stopping power when using disc as compared to drum brakes is going to be drastically shorter, we're going to get stopped much more safely, much more quickly even with the larger loads that we typically have with our campers. Now this particular kit has the E-coat on it. It's going to be the black finish you see.

It helps to fight some of the properties that are sometimes in brake dust that cause corrosion. Caliper, caliper slides are the same way but if you want them in a raw finish, they're also available that way.These brake pads are designed just like automotive grade pads. We've got the chamfered edge here on the front that's going to reduce any of that chatter that we sometimes get. You've also got the springs here designed to hold the pads in place and keep them from moving around and those also are going to have a nice coating on them to help resist any corrosion. As we've said before, these are ceramic brake pads and ceramic brake pads, they tend to generate less dust and also give us better stopping power.

Also, you'll notice our rotors are going to be ventilated. That's going to help dissipate a lot of heat. The number one enemy of brakes is going to be heat. When they get hot, they start to work less and less so that helps to dissipate that, get that heat out of our rotors so we'll have better stopping power.Now this is designed to fit the 50 millimeter sealed bearing style hubs so we're looking at the XL-Lube, the Never Lube, the XL-Lube 2, any of those larger spindles or if they just slide on, this is going to be the perfect solution. Now the biggest difference you're going to have between the different sets available and the best way to tell if they're going to work on your trailer, of course, you're going to need to Never Lube, the XL-Lube, the hubs we've talked about but some of them have a 9/16" wheel stud, some of them have a 1/2".

It's going to be the biggest difference. The rest of the differences are really whether you're getting the E-coat or just the standard raw finish.There will be kits available for the 7000 or 8000 pound variety of axle as well. You're going to have everything you need for either braking components. All of your bolts, your hardware, and even the bracket to get this bolted onto your axle. A lot of times you're just going to reuse the existing axle hardware that was holding on the old electric brake so if those are damaged, be sure to get replacements.Now each kit's going to come with two of rotors. It's going to come with two calipers loaded with pads already. We're going to have caliper bolts that come with it and the mounting bracket. Also included will be the cap. Once you've got everything put together, knock that on there with a rubber mallet, that'll keep everything sealed up and keep that dirt and grime from getting inside.That's going to complete our look at the Kodiak disc brake kit designed for the XL-Lube, the XL-Lube 2, the Dexter Nev-R-Lube, and Never Lube hubs.
