If you tow a boat trailer, live in a coastal area, or experience a lot of snow, slush, and salt on the roads, you know how corrosive salt and water can be. Because disc brakes last longer than drum brakes, you should consider how things like rust might impact your trailer over time.


The Dacromet coating on these brakes offers great corrosion protection, even with frequent use in freshwater and saltwater. It can withstand 300 to 400 hours of continual exposure to salt spray before corrosion begins, which is comparable to galvanized steel. So - unless you're driving your trailer through water for 2 weeks straight with no chance for the brakes to dry - it'll be a while before any rust starts to form.

Save Time and Money

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes. Not only do disc brakes provide more controlled braking than drum brakes, but they also save you money by having fewer parts to maintain.

Unlike drum brakes, which have springs, magnets, and shoes that may need to be continually adjusted or replaced, disc brakes are virtually maintenance-free. There are no springs, cables, or other little components that you'll need to worry about failing.

The brake pads will naturally wear down, so eventually you'll have to replace them. But these pads are also way easier to replace than drum brake shoes. The caliper - where the pads are housed - is located on the outside of the brake assembly. This means you just have to remove that one part to replace the brake pads rather than having to remove the entire assembly like you would with drum brakes.

This particular kit can save you time and money over other disc brakes on the market as well. A slip-on rotor may be easier to install initially, but water can find its way between the rotor and your existing hub, causing uneven rotor wear or runout. With a 1-piece hub-and-rotor assembly, water and debris can't get in to cause any corrosion or contamination.


In addition, vented rotors, like these, disperse heat faster than non-vented rotors. When brakes retain heat, they are more likely to experience brake fade, or loss of braking power. So even if you take your boat or camper out every weekend, these trailer brakes will continue to offer excellent performance throughout their long life.

Kodiak disc brakes have a unique caliper mounting bracket as well. The side-support design puts all of the weight on the mounting bracket instead of on the bolts. This reduces premature wear and extends the life of the bolts, further ensuring optimal performance.


Determining the Bolt Pattern

If you want to remount your existing wheels after installing these brakes, you'll need a kit that offers the same bolt pattern. To determine the bolt pattern, count the number of bolt holes (or lug nuts) on your trailer's wheel. This will give you the first number in the pattern. To find the second number, just measure the distance between a bolt hole and the bolt hole across from it.

For example on wheels with an even number of bolt holes: 6 on 5-1/2" means 6 bolt holes with 5-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the center of the hole across from it.

And with an odd number of bolt holes: 5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" from the center of 1 hole to the farthest edge of one of the 2 farthest bolt holes.

Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a quick look at this Kodiak 13-inch hub and rotor disc brake assembly set. This is going to allow youto upgrade your trailer from drum brakes to disc brakes so that you can take advantage of the superior performancethat comes along with having disc brakes on your trailer. Having the two brake assemblies is going to allow us toupgrade a single axle with a 7,000 pound capacityand the number 42 spindles. Our rotors are 13 inches in diameter and you can see we've got eight of these half inch diameter bolts in the 8 on 6 and ahalf inch bolt pattern. So these are going to work for your wheels that are 16 inches and larger.

Our hub and rotor as well as our calipersand our mounting bracket, all have this Dacromet finish that's going to offer excellent rust and corrosion resistance with 300 to 400 hour of salt spray rating. So this is gonna be great option for your boat trailers and trailers that are used in coastal areas or on roads that aregonna be heavily treated. So if you're looking at your good, better, best kind of scenario, I'd say your Dacrometis probably your better. There is stainless steel construction that is going to be a little bit better, little bit longer lasting but your Dacromet is definitely one of your best options out there as far as corrosion resistance goes. So this is gonna do a greatjob for you on that side.

It's also going to give youa much better performance than you're used to with your drum brakes. Having the disc brakes is going to dramaticallyshorten your stopping distance. It's also going to makeit a much smoother, more controlled ride for you so you don't have to worry about that push and pull that you sometimes get with your drum brakes. These do have these ceramic brake pads that help to increase the stopping power and you can't see it, but there is a large 2and a half inch diameter stainless steel piston that's gonna provide fast, responsive braking for you. So definitely an improvementover your drum brakes.

And not only are you goingto get better performance but it's also going torequire less maintenance and therefore it's gonnasave you time and money. Having the one piecehub and rotor assembly is gonna reduce the chanceof uneven rotor wear. And then here on the side, we do have the vented design that's gonna help dissipate heat faster to prevent premature brake pad wear. So overall, a really great quality, automotive grade construction that's going to be very long lasting to help save you time and money. Doesn't have all the small springs and different thingsthat your drum brakes do, and so less to have toreplace in the future.

The one caveat with disc brakes is that they do requirea higher line pressure and so you're gonna need to make sure that you've got a brake actuator and brake lines that arerated for 1500 PSI or higher in order to activate your disc brakes. That's pretty rare on trailers that have drum brakes currently so that is gonna be a bit of a project to upgrade the rest of your system. But we do sell both the actuator and the brake lines here at etrailer.com and those are sold separately. They're not included in this kit. So this kit isn't gonna giveyou everything that you need but it is going to includethe two Dacromet plated, cast iron hub and rotor assemblies with those eight pre-installed wheel bolts that have that half inch diameter. You're also gonna get the 1 of these half inch zincplated steel lug nuts to make sure that yourwheel stays in place. You're gonna have the two Dacromet plated, cast iron calipers and the two Dacromet plated, ductile iron caliper mounting brackets. And these brackets you can see, have the 5-bolt brakeflange configuration. So they are gonna be very easyto put in place on your axle. Now I do want to point outthat I do have these mounted on top just for display purposes, for balance and whatnot. When you actually install these, they're gonna be on the side and having that side support design puts all the weight onthe mounting bracket instead of the bolts here. So it's gonna help to take some of the pressure off those bolts, make sure that they last longer. These are stainless steelcaliper mounting bolts. You're gonna get fourof these with this kit. You're also going to have the inner and outer racespre-installed on the system so those are included obviously but then you'll also get your inner and outer bearings to make sure thateverything's running smoothly. This kit is going to belubricated with grease so you're going to gettwo of these grease seals for the inside. And then two of these E-Z lube grease caps for the outside. Those do have that removable rubber plug so that you can very easilyaccess your E-Z lube spindles, pump some grease in there without having to take everything apartin between your regular grease bearing, packing maintenance. So overall, like I said, a great upgrade coming from drum brakes to disc brakes, gonna give you much better performance, require much less maintenance and having that Dacromet finish on there is going to make sure that these last a nice long time for you.
