Disc Brakes are Better Than Drum Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Unlike drum brakes, disc brakes deliver consistent braking, even at highway speeds. Disc brakes also offer a substantially shorter stopping distance. Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, so there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged, and fewer parts to have to repair or replace.

Great setup. Really improved the stopping power of my 36' fifth wheel. Just completed a coast to coast trip. The extra stopping power provided additional safety and peace of mind.

by:

Installed fairly easily, works great. Stops much faster than the old drum brakes.

by:

It's been working great for the past year. Wish I had the money to put on all of my trailers.

by:

The quality of the product was good. Everything went together and function as intended. Thanks

by:

Thanks for quickly resolving the shipping problem!!

by:

Parts were shipped and received quickly, everything mounted up right and all the hardware needed was included.

by:

Nice quality, fast shipment, and fairly easy installation. The brake line from the actuator to the first axle is quite long. I will go back with a custom line in the future, for now just coiled it up. William S was extremely helpful with my order.

by:

Overall a great kit. Only wish would be to use rubber lined SS adel clamps instead of the supplied plastic ones

by:

Products just arrived yesterday, even though i requested packaging to be better (saw poor review comments on this before hand), it arrived in 2 large boxes that were battered to hell and opened up with contents exposed. Much to my surprise, it appears all parts are present and undamaged, going to install over weekend and will follow up with after install evaluation.

by:

Prices, promptness of shipping and delivery, and customer service is the best I have ever done business with.

  • Parts Needed to Convert Outdoors RV 19MKS to Disc Brake
Hey Bruce, since the Dexter 4,000 lb axles use the same components as 3,500 lb axles what you'd need to convert the axle to disc would be the disc brake kit part # HYD22FR which comes with the needed disc brake components, brake lines, and the best actuator that is the most reliable and quickest reacting. Are you just wanting more powerful brakes?

  • Recommended Circuit Breaker for Installing a Hydrastar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator
Hey Howard welcome back. Here are the parts you'll need and how to wire it up. Since your 12 volt accessory circuit is only rated for 20 amps you are going to want to run a 10 gauge wire like item # 10-1-1 (sold by the foot) from the positive battery post through a 40 amp circuit breaker like item # 9510 to the 12 volt accessory circuit so that you would have a circuit rated high enough for the item # HBA16. I have linked a schematic below that will show you how to wire up the Hydrastar...

  • Marine Rated Hydrastar Disc Brake Kit for Tandem Axle 3,500 lb Axle
Hey Kellon, we can help you piece together a kit like the part # HYD22FR that includes the marine grade actuator but as a complete kit we don't have one with it. So the first thing you'll need is a marine grade actuator which we have with the part # HS381-9067, then you'll want the 3,500 lb disc brake components # DX35ER that you referenced and the tandem axle brake line kit part # HS496-252 and you'd have everything you need.

  • What Is The Difference Between Hydrastar Kits HYD22FR And HYD42FR?
Hello James, thanks for reaching out. Both the kits you mentioned, the Hydrastar # HYD22FR and # HYD42FR are complete conversion kits for standard 3,500 lb axles. The difference is the calipers included with each kit. The # HYD22FR has stainless steel calipers, while the # HYD42FR comes with Dacromet coated calipers. Aside from that both kits come with everything you need to convert to EOH disc brakes. You will just need to make sure your tow vehicle is equipped with a brake controller...

  • Are Bearings and Grease Seal Standard on 3,500 lb Axles on 2005 Wells Cargo Landscape Trailer
Hey David! 99% of the time 3,500 lb axles use the standard bearing and grease seal combination. However, it wouldn't hurt to check just to be sure. If you check your axle tag you will find the manufacturer along with the serial number which can be used to identify the bearings. You could also pull the hubs off and check for part numbers/measure the inner diameter of the bearings. More than likely the Hydrastar Disc Brake Kit w/ Actuator for Tandem Axle Trailers # HYD22FR will fit but,...

  • What Is The Difference Between Parts HYD22FR And HYD42FR?
Hey Tobias, The only difference between the two brake kits is that the # KYD22FR has stainless steel calipers. Otherwise the kits are the same kit. Stainless steel calipers are going to be better for corrosion and resisting rust than the dacromet coated calipers on the # KYD42FR kit. They are both the same exact brakes and capacities, I recommend if you find yourself towing frequently through different environments and moisture to go with the # KYD22FR that has the stainless steel calipers....

  • Will Hydrastar Disc Brakes Fit 2017 Forest River With 3,500 lb Lippert Axles
Hi Kirk; the Hydrastar Disc Brake Kit # HYD34VR will fit idler hubs with a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. I'm guessing you already have electric brakes on your trailer so you have hub and drum assemblies on their now. Instead of picking up separate idler hubs to make this kit work I recommend getting the Hydrastar Disc Brake Kit # HYD22FR. This includes hub-and-rotor assemblies that are one piece so separate hubs are not required. For a brake controller I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty...
