Disc Brakes are Better Than Drum Brakes

More and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. Unlike drum brakes, disc brakes deliver consistent braking, even at highway speeds. Disc brakes also offer a substantially shorter stopping distance. Disc brake calipers have only one moving part, so there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged, and fewer parts to have to repair or replace.

Over-the-Hub Rotors for Easy Replacement

Slip-on, cast iron rotors make it easy to convert an idler axle to a disc brake axle. Simply place the rotor over your hub and use your existing wheel bolts to hold it in place. With a separate rotor and hub, you can easily repair or replace one element of your brake system without having to junk the whole thing.

The rotor is made from cast iron, matching SAE specifications. Cast iron is ideal for high-temperature operations and offers a favorable friction coefficient to ensure adequate stopping power. Rotors are vented to effectively dissipate heat, dramatically reducing the incidence of heat-related damage.

Video Transcript for Review of Hydrastar Trailer Brakes - Single Axle Disc Brake Kit with Actuator - HYD62FR

Hello, everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at the Hydrastar Slip-On Rotor Disc Brake Kit with the electric-over-hydraulic brake actuator for your single 3,500 pound trailer axle with the 5 on 4 1/2 inch bolt pattern. Now, this all-inclusive kit we'll have everything you need to switch your trailer over to disc brakes for improved performance and greater stopping power. The over-the-hub rotors right here are very easy to install. Basically, they'll fit over your standard idler hubs, and they're held in place by your existing wheel lug nuts. So there's no need to have to replace your entire hub-and-rotor assembly if only the hub or the rotor becomes damaged.

Now, this kit will include everything laid out here on the table. Comes with two disc brake end kits for one axle. We mentioned the slip-on dacromet-coated cast iron rotors come with it. The inner and outer bearings are included, the grease seals. The dacromet-coated calipers with the brake pads and installation bolt is included.

And you'll see we have them attached to the dacromet-coated caliper mounting brackets, which you can see are designed to fit 4-bolt brake flanges. Now, the dacromet coating on all these parts, the rotors, the caliper, and the caliper mounting brackets, is corrosion resistant. Now, right here, we have the Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic brake actuator. This will hardwire into your tow vehicle, and it signals the in-cab brake controller when your brakes are applied, triggering the pump and the motor in the actuator. This will create a nice, smooth, even braking with a fast response time.

And it is designed to work with most in-cab brake controllers. Now, the brake line kit, right here, we have the solid brake lines over here, the flexible lines over here, fittings for single-axle trailers. Now, we do list on the product page of this product all of the part numbers that are included with this kit. Now, more and more people are switching their trailers over to disc brakes, and with good reason. 'Cause unlike drum brakes, these disc brakes will deliver consistent braking, even at highway speeds.

The disc brakes will also offer a substantially shorter stopping distance. And the disc brake caliper right here have only one moving part, so there are fewer parts to maintain, fewer parts to get damaged, and of course, fewer parts to have to repair or replace. Few specs on this again, this fits a single-axle trailer with a 3,500 pound axle. Bolt pattern, 5 on 4 1/2 inches. And the rotor diameter is 10 inches. But that should do it for a look at the Hydrastar Slip-On Rotor Disc Brake Kit with the electric-over-hydraulic brake actuator for your single 3,500 pound trailer axle.
