Upgrading From Electric Brakes on 16' Enclosed Trailer

Updated 02/17/2026 | Published 02/12/2026

Question:

I would like to upgrade my enclosed 16’ trailer brakes. I use it for construction and it’s loaded with a lot of tools. I just replaced the electric brakes a year ago. I don’t feel like they perform as they should. Can I upgrade to a stronger/heavier duty brake?

Hey Jerry! You can definitely upgrade the brakes on your enclosed trailer. The best option would be to switch to an electric over hydraulic setup. It looks like you ordered some 3,500 lb electric brakes a while ago, do you have a 3,500 lb axle? Assuming this is for the same trailer, you can use one of the following to upgrade based on single or tandem axle:

-Hydrastar Disc Brake Kit w/ Actuator for Single Axle Trailers - 10" Rotor - 5 on 4-1/2 - 3.5K # HYD82FR

-Hydrastar Disc Brake Kit w/ Actuator for Tandem Axle Trailers - 10" Rotor - 5 on 4-1/2 - 3.5K # HYD22FR

Both kits come with everything you need to upgrade the brakes. You already have a 7-way since you have electric brakes, and a brake controller which will activate the Hydrastar brake actuator. If you have different axles let me know in the comments below and I'll help you find the right fit for your trailer.
