Video Transcript for Detailed Breakdown of the Roadmaster 8" Safety Cable Extensions w/ Quick Links

Today we're going to be taking a looking at the Roadmaster 8 inch safety cable extensions. These are going to extend the length of your towing system, without having to buy new safety cables. Extensions add on an extra 8 inches, so you can use high low receivers, hitch extensions, and other accessories. It's going to come with both cables, and it's going to come with the quick links. The cables are a braided steel construction. Nice strong, durable design.

Here in the center it's going to have a vinyl coating. The coating is going to help keep the cables from scratching any component of your towing setup. The cable portion, with the vinyl coating, has a diameter of around 3/8 of an inch. The quick links are made from a steel construction, with a zinc finish to resist rust and corrosion. They feature a threaded connector right here, for easy connecting and disconnecting. It can be done by hand, or you could use a wrench if you want to.

A 5/8 inch wrench, or a 15mm wrench would work well for this unit. I want to give some measurements right here of the actual quick link. If we take a look at the overall length and width, measuring from outer edge to outer edge, that's going to measure about 3 and 3/16 of an inch going that way. About 1 and 9/16 of an inch going this direction. Pretty close to 1 and 5/8 measuring from the outer point of the barrel to the side right here. The opening that we have between these two areas right here, so measuring the opening of that gap. That's going to measure pretty close to half an inch, about 7/16 of an inch, right in that area.

Internally . I also want to mention real quick, that the diameter of the unit is going to be 3/8 of an inch. You can see here that the threaded portion of the quick link is a little bit larger in diameter, that's actually going to have a diameter of about 7/16 of an inch to 1/2 an inch. These simply allow for easy connecting and disconnecting of the cables. If we measure the usable space on the inside, going lengthwise, we're looking about 2 and, pretty close to 2 and 1/2 inches, maybe 2 and 9/16. If we measure right below that barrel, that's going to give us about 3/4 of an inch.

If we measure right to the barrel, we're looking at about 5/8 of an inch. These are very easy to use. Again, nice strong, durable construction. They're going to add, or offer, about 8 inches of extension. They have that 8,000 pound capacity. That's going to do it for today's look at the Roadmaster 8 inch safety cable extensions. .

The quick links have been put to good use and perform as designed. I ended up with a second larger set of similar links and with one large and one small link on each side, I can adjust the safety chains to exactly where I want them.

by:

Needed extension to leave tailgate down 8” extension worked perfectly

by:

Perfect fit with our safety tow hooks for our Jeep.

by:

Works perfect, I just wanted to add a little length for my tow cables.

by:

Simple, gave the extra length we needed for a different truck to be able to pull the trailer without replacing the chains.

by:

I purchased a new Motorhome which was 6 inches taller then my old one. I was able to use a 6inch high low drop hitch for my tow car, but the safety cables were too short. So I purchased the 8 inch extensions from etrailer. This saved the hassle of replacing my short ones for longer ones and saved the cost of replacing. Thank you etrailer !

by:

Work as advertised, e trailer is awesome to do business with.

by:

Great deal - delivered on time and as described. Easy to order.

by:

After looking at several local stores, I finally found these. Nothing else had the weight rating I was looking for to pull my travel trailer. I have a 6" lift on my truck so most trailer chains won't reach any longer. These solved both problems! Great quality & work great! Highly recommended if your truck is lifted.

by:

The cables worked great, it makes it easier to hook up my toad and with the drop hitch I needed a little extra length, Thank you

by:

Perfect for extra chain length for F150 6" lifted truck.

by:

Perfect to extend chains

by:

They did the job of extending my breakaway cables.

by:

Exactly what I needed. Thanks for having a great inventory. Got the new cables in plenty of time for our next trip.

by:

Looks like an excellent product , great customer service!! I accidently ordered 2 items somehow and got a call from this company, they took care of my mistake, shipped the item right a way and again the item appears to be exactly what I needed, thank you guys !!

by:

The clamps were not big enough to fit my f550 hitch but I found something that would make it fit. I like it now thanks

by:

Purchased the Swagman Traveler XCS Platform Style Rack bicycle rack mounted on a 15 ¾ “ Hidden Hitch ball mount. It allowed me to tow 2 bicycles mounted on the hitch and still tow our 15 ft. pop up camper. After a year on the road hauling the camper, I could not be happier. The Swagmen bike rack is superbly engineered and manufactured. The designers seemed to think of everything as far as usability and durability. I definitely recommend also using the Roadmaster Quiet Hitch Anti Rattle device. It provided positive clamping to eliminate tow bar movement within the hitch receiver. Also purchased the Roadmaster 8” Safety Cable Extensions which were needed to allow attachment of the safety chains which were not long enough to reach the hitch mounting once the longer ball mount was installed. Also praise to Kelsey W. at etrailer.com who assisted me by answering my questions and guiding me through the sale. All equipment arrived within the time promised and all in good shape.

by:

Work well to extend the safety cables on my Roadmaster tow bar.

by:

The cable extension was perfect for my 5x8 cargo trailer chains when towing with a RAM 2500 (and now 3500). Had to use a ball mount with a 10" drop to get the trailer level, and this extension was just right for the extra length this required. The quick links were a little small for the chain attachment on the truck, so I replaced these with a larger clevis hook. Very satisfied with the quality of the parts.

by:

Incredible customer service! Unsolicited direct contact from a customer service rep after my purchase to ensure that all things were good to go. I'll be back when I need more trailer parts!!

They work great. Put on a new actuator that lengthened the neck of my trailer. This made a quick fix without having to replace the safety chains.

by:

Thank you for the email. I do have a copy concern. The part i bought has an advertised breaking capability of 8000 lbs, but the quick links only have a 2200 lbs strength. What am i missing?

Thats a great question. The 2200 lb figure from the quick links refers to the Working Load Limit of the quick links, which applies when the gate or threaded portion of the link is open not fastened. When the gate is secured, the breaking strength is 5 times the 2200 lb working load limit, or 11000 lb. In this case, the cables are rated at 8000 lb so capacity of the system as a whole is 8000 lbs.

by:

Bought this to go with my extended trailer hitch
As my chain wasn’t long enough for slack when turning, works great

by:

Perfect solution to connecting my trailer to my Tesla Model X. Safety chains were not long enough but these did the trick.

by:

The product seems very durable and looks exactly as described. The most helpful part of the description was the exact size between the ends of the loops. It fit my towing assembly perfectly. I haven't used it yet, but this extension looks thicker than the safety cable I am trying to extend, so I have no worries about how it will perform.

by:

The 8" cable extensions are exactly as advertised and delivered. The Etrailer folks are great to deal with. Have bought other items from them in the past and will continue to purchase items in the future.

  • Troubleshooting Flat Tires When Towing Mini Cooper With 2011 Holiday Rambler
First, before flat towing your 2011 Mini Cooper, be sure the tires are filled to the recommended psi and in good condition. More importantly, be certain your steering column is not locked; if your tires are unable to turn they would wear out quickly. If you think your safety cables may be an issue, and yours are shorter than 7', an option would be the Blue Ox Blue Ox 7' Safety Cables # BX88197. Another thing you could do is add an anti-rattle device such as the Blue Ox Hitch Receiver Immobilizer...

  • How To Determine The Correct High/Low Adapter For Flat Towing A 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon
Roadmaster lists the height of the baseplate attachment point on a 2022 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with factory tires at 16-1/4". This means you're 7-3/4" off from level and would need to use a high/low adapter like the Blue Ox # BX88241. Adding in an adapter will increase your overall length so your safety cables might need an extension, like part # RM-910648-8. I recommend checking out the help article I've attached below to walk you through measuring for the correct adapter size.

  • Chain Extender Recommendation for Swagman Original 4 Bike Towing Rack
Extending out the safety chains is definitely something that has to be done with the Swagman Original 4 Bike Towing Rack S64675. The RoadMaster 8" Safety Cable Extensions # RM-910648-8 will help get the job done but I do recommend picking up another pair of the Cable Connectors # RM-910022 so you can have one set directly connected to your chains (bypassing that S-Hook) and then another set connected to your safety chain loops. If you'd like to make connecting to the safety chain loops...

  • Recommend Safety Chain Extensions For A 2017 Forest River Wildwood Heritage Glen 326RLS
The safety chain extensions would just need to be capable of handling the weight of the trailer as a pair so for 8,200lbs you would be good to go with the ones like the Demco Safety Cable Extensions # DM9523064, which have a 14,000lb break-strength capacity.

  • Is the Weight Capacity of the RoadMaster Safety Cable Extensions Per Pair
I spoke to my contact at Roadmaster about the RoadMaster 8" Safety Cable Extensions part # RM-910648-8 and they stated that each cable is rated for 8,000 lbs but that does not means it will give you 16,000 lbs in total as if one were to break, you will still only have a 8,000 lb capacity. This is going to be true for most safety cables and chains. If you need something higher then we have the Demco Safety Cable Extensions part # DM9523064 which are rated at 14,000 lbs and have a 12" extension....

I reached out to my contact at EcoHitch to see if they have seen this issue before with the EcoHitch # 306-X7201 on your Tesla and if they have any suggestions. My contact did say that the Tesla rear bumper has quite a bit of tolerance from the factory, so it's something they occasionally see but more often there's enough clearance available to hook up safety chains. With that being said, clearance is obviously an issue for you based on the picture you attached. My contact said they have...

  • Troubleshooting Tow Bar Cable S-Hooks Bending the Hitch Pin
I have a solution for you, but I do not think getting a longer hitch pin is the answer. From the picture you provided, it looks like it is the S-hook of the safety cable that is getting behind your hitch pin and the pushing into the hitch lock side causing it to bend. You can use the RoadMaster 8" Safety Cable Extensions # RM-910648-8 to extend the S-hooks further away from the hitch pin.
