Question:
Hi is each cable rated for 8000 lbs or is the rating for both cables combined. My camper is 7000lb max load. Wondering how much safety margin these cables offer.

I spoke to my contact at Roadmaster about the RoadMaster 8" Safety Cable Extensions part # RM-910648-8 and they stated that each cable is rated for 8,000 lbs but that does not means it will give you 16,000 lbs in total as if one were to break, you will still only have a 8,000 lb capacity. This is going to be true for most safety cables and chains. If you need something higher then we have the Demco Safety Cable Extensions part # DM9523064 which are rated at 14,000 lbs and have a 12" extension.
Please keep in mind that the above cables are designed for flat-towing. If you are pulling a trailer then you really want to use a set of safety cables like the Curt Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables part # C80176 or safety chains like the Buyers Products 3/8" x 35" Class 4 Trailer Safety Chain part # 337B03835SC (2).
I would also check with the DOT for your state to see if safety cables are even permitted to be used on a trailer as some will require an actual safety chain of a certain size.
