Hi, Matt with Etrailer. Today we're gonna be talking about our Yakima roof rack system, on our 2021 Ford Explorer. Now this is gonna be a great option for ya, if you're running outta space in the back of your Explorer. Whether you have a lotta people back here, since you do have that extra row of seating, or you already have a lot of items back there. Or maybe you have longer items like a kayak or skis, that you don't wanna fit back in here, and want to keep things clear, this is gonna be a great solution for ya to solve that. This is gonna be comprised of two parts.
That first part's gonna be our 60-inch arrow crossbars on top, and beneath that we're gonna have our Yakima towers, which are gonna grab onto our raised rails. Let's take a closer look at those crossbars. So what I like about these JetStream crossbars in particular is this T channel up top. A lot of crossbars have 'em. But this one's nice because it has this built-in weather strip.
To you don't have to worry about taking this off, cutting it down the size, to accommodate any accessories up top. This is gonna help reduce any wind noise that goes over the top of it, and it's gonna keep a lotta debris from getting in here too. Then underneath, we're gonna have this additional channel too. And this one's gonna be where your tower is plugged into, and it'll also come with a weather strip. That one you will have to cut down the size, just so you don't get any wind noise traveling through there.
And that shape to it is gonna be great, because that's also gonna help make this a better ride, reducing all that noise up top. Our towers are gonna be fairly straightforward. You'll be able to take a closer look at 'em, inside of here. It's just gonna be this strap that wraps all the way around, and hooks onto these two hooks. You'll have your two bolts in here, that tighten everything down and make sure everything's secured.
Now one thing I don't like about these ones in particular though, is gonna be our rear crossbar in this case. And that's just gonna be for the simple case, with the raised rails that we have today, is we have this plastic portion underneath, which you can still maneuver. But it is a little bit of a pain of getting your strap through this tiny portion right here. As to what we can put up here, we're gonna be able to put up to 165 pounds. And that's something to keep in mind too, especially so you don't overload what your roof can handle. Make sure you check what your owner's manual says for your roof capacity. But as for the total height it's gonna add, that's gonna be just about three inches. So what I'd recommend doing is taking the total height of your vehicle, from the raised rails, plus your crossbars, and plus any accessories you have on top, so you know what areas you can make it under. But as for your clamped on accessories, what you can fit underneath here. If I go from this raised portion, that's gonna be about three inches, which is a decent amount. So you'll be able to put on a lot of clamp-on accessories. But if you don't wanna put on any clamp-on accessories, you still have the ability to use this T channel up top, to put any of those T channel accessories on here. We're gonna have some overhang, and actually I think this is a great amount to have. Because this is going to stick out far enough where you're not gonna be likely to bump your head on, but it's gonna give you plenty of room if you wanna put on any of those clamp-on accessories at the very end, and make things a little bit easier of taking off and putting on items. Overall, a couple things I like about this roof rack system. It's gonna be one, the main one, it's gonna be the strap that wraps all the way around this raised rail. And I like that full coverage it has, it just gives you a little bit more peace of mind. And the second thing I liked about this one in particular is the built-in weather strip. But there's another one I'd still recommend is the Rhino Rack Roof Rack System, it is gonna work very similar to this one, only it won't have that built-in weather strip, but it's a lot easier to install, and it looks a little bit cleaner in my opinion. But, if you like this one for that built-in weather strip and that strap wrapping all the way around, I think it's a solid choice. But if you do need a hand with that install, just stay tuned, we will show you how to do that. Let it start off our installation, we're just gonna lay out everything. So first up, we're gonna have our crossbars. And next up we're gonna have our towers, and the hardware that comes with them. And then we're gonna have this included tool with a torque device built in. And then last step, I recommend grabbing a tape measure, just to make this a little bit easier. And if you look behind me, you'll be able to tell that we've already installed the rear crossbar. The process is gonna be the same for both of 'em, so we're just gonna show you how to do the front one. First step is installing this block in this channel. Now we already have this plastic piece installed on ours. You might have to install yours yourself, and all that is is just gonna be matching that shape up and pushing it in until it clicks into place. And then, next up we're just gonna flip this around. Make sure this back strap is loosened enough. If it's not, you'll have to just take your included tool, and just loosen this bolt just a little bit more. And once you've got it loosened, you can push the strap through. And you'll be able to see there's this nut in there. And if I flip this around, I'll be able to match this up with the block now. So what I like to do is just apply pressure to that block, and tighten everything down into place. You don't need to tighten it down a lot, just slightly, just enough it to grab on. 'Cause we want this relatively loose, because we want this to slide into that channel. And you're gonna just do the same for both of 'em. And make sure you don't put these end caps back on now, we're gonna save that for later. Instead we're gonna move over to our crossbar, and flip it over. You'll be able to tell it's flipped over because you're gonna have this long channel, with this ruler built in. Yours might already have the weather strip on there still, you'll just have to remove that. And now I'm just gonna remove this end cap just by sliding it off. And that trick is just to lift up on this tab, and now it should come right off. And now I'm just gonna slide our towers on. One trick to this is just sliding both of 'em from one side, making sure they're gonna be facing in opposite directions. And the directions you want them to face, is this bolt facing out and away from the center. Just matching up that block with that channel. And when you have 'em on here, you can put your end cap back on. Just tighten our towers just slightly to our crossbars. 'Cause what we wanna do is put this on top of our roof, and we don't want these towers sliding all around. But you also don't want 'em too tight, we won't be able to make any adjustments. So just make it tight enough where it's slightly grabbing the crossbars. Measure from where the rear one is to where the front one's gonna sit. And I want mine to sit about 30 inches. So make sure you just leave some type of marker where you wanna place your next crossbar, once you already have the first one installed. And that's just gonna depend on what accessories you already own. And now I'm gonna grab my crossbar, and I'm gonna make sure it's in the right orientation, making sure that this thicker side is facing forward, and the thinner side behind us. And I'm just gonna lift up, and put it roughly where we placed our markers and we'll just feed this strap through, and just roughly place it here. I'm gonna take my tape measure, and I'm just gonna double check things haven't moved. In our case, they did move a little bit. So we're just gonna make a few adjustments, making sure we're keeping the same distance on both sides so the crossbars aren't crooked. Grab our strap. And I'm just going to put this metal portion on these two hooks, 'til it grabs on. And sometimes we might wanna detach, so you can just tighten this bolt here just slightly so it's not gonna fall off. We don't wanna tighten it too much because it's gonna end up pulling too much on one side. We just wanna make sure it's making contact and causing a little bit of tension. And then you repeat that same process on the other side, just going back and forth. And you're just gonna keep tightening down, until you start hearing the torque device on your tool click. Just like that. And the next thing we wanna do is make sure we tighten this bolt within here too. 'Cause that's gonna be what tightens your tower to your crossbar. And make sure that click into place too, and repeat that process on the other side. The last step we're gonna do is just putting on this end cap. Make sure it clicks into place. Just like that, making sure you do the same on old sides. I like to give it a little shake test too. Make sure we got a secure fit. And if it looks secure, you can put on any accessories you want now. And then take it for a ride. That's just a look at a Yakima roof rack system on a 2021 Ford Explorer.

Full-length aluminum bars maximize carrying capacity.Excellent solution for my 2023 Chevy Silverado. In the past, I have had rails installed on the roof of my pickup trucks, but I find the BaseLine towers to be a better solution, since they don't permanently change the truck. Plus, they are much more solid than SkyLine system on the rails.
Follow the instructions, and you can't go wrong on the self installation
Really easy to install & work as specified. So happy with the customer support/service at etrailer.
product was just what I needed The folks at etrailer were extremely helpufl!!
Love my Yakima roof rack!! It exceeds my expectations.great product. Also thank etrailer for the tec support! great staff always there to help thanks again!!
Easy to install. It probably took 45min. I bought them for my 2024 Expedition to haul a canoe. I have not done that yet but I expect no issues.
Ackage came 2 days early the install was somewhat easy (did it by myself)
Did not get to mount anything to it but seems really sturdy. One thing I can say is mark out your mounting points with provided stickers then put up and make adjustments to the roof rack.
I have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT which has the non-functional roof side bars. Etrailer.com helped me figure this out and gave me several options that would work. As I already have Yakima bike racks - I wanted to stick with the brand. The price on etrailer.com was the same as Yakima but had free shipping and no tax - awesome. Product arrived quickly!
I went with the Yakima 60" Jetstream cross bars, baseline towers, and the appropriate pads and clips.
The Yakima product came with thorough and easy to understand instructions. I was able to get the track installed and working in about an hour - and that was taking it slow and double checking everything. I was very pleased with the fit and finish.
After a test run, there was no wind noise or issue with the rack. Looking forward to taking a road trip next month with it!
I ordered these as part of a complete roof rack kayak carrier system. Everything else was great, but this box arrived (within a larger box with other components) somewhat battered, and obviously re-taped shut.
Clearly, it was a return, and it never been inspected. Pieces of the baseclip components were missing from the box.
I contacted etrailer, and it took about 20+ minutes to arrange shipment of a new set, even after having sent several images of the box and incomplete product.
They sent a replacement, which arrived a few days later. But I purchased and paid for brand new products, and was VERY disappointed to receive a returned, incomplete set.
The Yakima rack system for my 2015 Ford Fusion is an awesome product! I hadn't needed to buy aftermarket racks in many years. These are a super solid, beefy, and very well made product. I am very impressed with the quality and fit. Yakima has obviously put lots of design time into them. And etrailer does an outstanding job of making sure you get the right product for your specific need.
I chose this rack specifically because of the spread between the bars - 32" - and for the higher weight limit, as I'm carrying a fishing kayak.
Solid build quality and easy installation on my '21 Mazda CX-5.
Love it! We've made several long trips with full luggage loads.
So far so good. Purchased these towers to use on a 2022 GMC Canyon with HD bars that I already had, primarily to carry my canoe. Yakima's fitting instructions worked perfectly and the whole system seems really solid.
Well packaged and on time
Your notice of schemes was a lot better than the yakima site provided. They did not suggest the scheme you did.
But when the products arrived, the instructions were by yakima. Generally worked as instructed except the tower to tower transverse mounting dimensions needed to be tweaked for a perfect fit.
Not a bad setup. I dont believe you need the 60" bars i received as they hang over the edge of your Hyundai. You need to watch your head getting in and out of your vehicle. The Jetstream crossbars are very loud at speeds over 65 mph. Im probably used to it by now, but it is definitely noticeable. Much louder than an older Rhino Rack of similar dimensions i had. Install was simple and took about 30 minutes, just take your time and measure correctly like all roof racks.
Easy to order and quick to ship. Took a bit of time to get these installed correctly so they fit just right.
1 year later and still love my Yakima JetStream system. I've mostly used them to transport my kayak however I've also been able to transport some big box store items as well. They are very versatile. There is a t-track option as well as wrap around attachments. I've use ladder attachments, eyebolts, and Thule Hullavator in t-track. I've used Malone MegaWing and Yakima Skybox as wrap around attachment. What I really like about the t-track system is that you do not need to cut out the rubber track insert. You simply slide over the rubber, which allows you to adjust your system, on the fly, to load what you need to carry.
the product was exceptional. I would recommend it to anyone, who has a vehicle with a naked roof. It is a solid as a factory installed rack. Josh went out of his way to get me a replacement torque screw driver because the first one from Yakima was working properly.
I want to thank the staff at eTrailer for their outstanding support. After my roof rack order got off to a shaky start the customer service staff stepped in and made it right; 100% RIGHT. I cannot thank them, and eTrailer, enough. Regarding the roof rack itself, I have now installed it and can vouch that the installation was a breeze. All parts fit and the instructions were correct. For the record, this is not my first purchase from eTrailer (I've bought hitch items from them before) and it won't be my last. They have ALWAYS given great service, their web site works, their products and descriptions are good, etc., etc. Thank you!
Great product fast shipping
Great! Easy to install!
Great service and great staff. They will have all the technical information you need.
These Yakima crossbars are a part of the Yakima towers I bought to install on my Jeep Cherokee to hold a pair of Kayaks. They fit great as advertised. In fact I got these discounted as an open box. I would have never known, they look brand new. Thank you etrailer for your great advice, customer service and quick shipping process.
