2020 Subaru Ascent Premium . Can I mount this cargo basket on my vehicle directly to the raised side rails or do I need cross bars? Also, can I strap Paddleboards directly to this cargo basket or will I need some kind of adjustment?

Your 2020 Subaru Ascent will require a roof rack to carry any cargo basket, including the Thule Canyon XT Roof Cargo Basket # TH859XT.
Assuming you have raised side rails that run front to back on your Ascent, here is the roof rack that will work with your Subaru:
- Yakima JetStream Crossbars # Y00429 (Silver) or # Y00426 (Black)
- TimberLine Towers for Yakima Crossbars # Y33TR
As for the paddleboards, there isn't anything designed to carry them in a cargo basket so you can use whatever you like to hold them down. You can also consider going with a paddleboard carrier, the Thule SUP Taxi XT Stand-Up Paddleboard Carrier # TH810001.
