Video Transcript for Swagman Hitch Bike Racks Review - 2016 Chevrolet Suburban

Today on our 2016 Chevrolet Suburban, we're test fitting the Swagman Original. It's a 4-bike towing rack designed for 2-inch hitches, and the part number for that is S64675. We do already have our bike on the rack. We're going to go ahead and show you some features of that, and also how we secure the bike down. To release our bike, we're just going to undo these knobs here. With this style rack, it's great because you can attach trailers to that ball mount in the back here, so you're not just limited to trailing one rack or one trailer behind your vehicle. Also on the rack here, we've got this area where you can put a padlock.

You will have to provide your own, or purchase one, but it's a great feature to make sure your bikes are secure and safe. You also have a nice feature of this padded cradles here, and they're secure enough that your bike doesn't move too much when you're driving down the road. You have a little bit of sway, but not very much. A lot of customers like that it's pretty simple to keep your bike in place. We're going to take that plate off the top here, we just lift our bike off, and we can set it off to the side. Then we'll go ahead and replace our plate, and tighten that down.

Now that we've got those in place, we'll go ahead and take some measurements. First we're going to do our overall here. The back of the vehicle, we're adding about 30 1/2 inches there. Our ground clearance, it's going to be about 22 inches, and our closest point looks like about 3 1/2 inches here. Another feature that a lot of people like is that we can tow our bike rack away from the vehicle to access that back hatch.

I'm just going to pull out this pin and clip here, lift up on the rack a little bit, and that will tilt away for full access to that back hatch area, to get anything in or out that you may need. Go ahead and close this on up, and we'll just lift right back up on our rack, and replace our pin and clip here. You may have to mess with the rack a little bit, to get that to fit all the way through. With this rack, it does come with an anti-rattle bolt 00:04:35 and a clip. That's going to keep a lot of the shake and play out of your bike rack as you're heading down the road, which is great if you do want to hook up a trailer to that bike rack. That's going to be our completed test fit of the Swagman Original 4-bike towing rack, part number for that is S64675, on our 2016 Chevrolet Suburban..

I missed two points when I ordered this bike rack ... 1 is that it is extremely heavy to lift and 2 the obvious but I missed it that the rack does not drop down ... like other racks I now own I was focused on the screw down holder which looks to be fine ... even for bikes I own that have different size cross bars The rack does sway from left to right ... just like my other racks ... great opportunity for Reese or someone to make a anti sway bar that would anchor on the vehicle hitch and connect to the vertical bike rack bar .. with a simple disconnect so the rack can be tilted Great service as usual from the people at eTrailer 262463

Excellent grip coverage on all four bikes, used adapter for woman's bikes. Unit did not have a lot of sway , can swing down for access to tailgate, and can still accept a ball for towing 411628

Works well, easy to use. Ideally it would have a 2" receiver at the end rather than a place for a ball. Be sure to have chain extensions ready when you are towing something. 145608

Bike rack arrived quickly and works well if no height adjustment is needed. The rack would be better if it had a hitch receptacle for height adjustment rather than the ball attaching directly to the rack. 91282

Perfect for my needs, how ever the ball end of the stem should have a 2" receiver so a drop down bar can be attached to insure proper height for the ball. Easy to assemble and use, holds bikes tight with almost no wiggle. Sway strap included is a bonus. 23785

Review from a similar Swagman Original in Hitch Bike Racks

My only concern is that because we are going to use on our fifth wheel, it would be nice to be able to have choices on where you could put the connecting pin. It still appears to be far from the trailer. This is my second swagman, my other is over 20 years old and just broke on the way to our winter destination. I am wondering if I could have an additional hole drilled into the steel? 620371

The bike rack is very substantial. I assembled it in less than 10 min. I took in on my first trip today loaded with 2 adult bikes and 1 children’s bike although I had to mount 1 of the bikes upside down they all stayed secure with no scratches. I am very pleased! 655477

Review from a similar Swagman Original in Hitch Bike Racks

This is a solid and well-engineered bike rack. I bought it because of the design. I need a bike rack to carry in the back of my pickup truck along with luggage on trailer trips. Bikes go on a rack I leave on the back of the trailer. When trailer is parked and we're ready to go biking I'll pull this new rack out of the pickup truck bed and put in on the truck. More convenient than my other racks, one of which is an extremely heavy platform style rack and the other one which has two upper support arms which doesn't fit well in the pickup bed along with the other items. This one lays flat, taking up minimal space. 121522

I purchased this as a gift for my boyfriend and it has been great! Mostly because it is very simple to assemble -- took about 10-15 minutes. Mounting the bikes was simple as well and had no issues with securing them properly. Great buy! 314367

This rack worked perfectly. It had plenty of clearance between my tailgate and itself. I also bought the leveling bars for each bike and they also worked perfectly. They made bike even with the top of the tailgate and I could only see some of the handlebars. There was no excess movement to cause me any distractions while driving. It’s made out of heavy duty steel tubing and easily held the weight of our bikes. It was super easy to put together and attach to my hitch. You will probably need a 2.5 - 2 in. reducer like I did. Overall, this was a great product. I’d recommend it to anyone. 561184

Rack is stable but cotter pin to too weak, even thought the rack is bolted to hitch. The cotter pin should go through the bolt not around, just in case.Otherwise, great! 54223

Comments
I agree that the cotter pin is weak. Doesnt seem right that it goes around the pin, instead of going through the pin.

For what it is worth, we haven't seen around-the-pin clips fail any more than the throug-pin style. The nice thing about the around-the-pin style is that it can rotate and reduce the risk of bending the clip. With the through-pin, it is a lot easier to bend that clip.

Review from a similar Swagman Original in Hitch Bike Racks

Product is better and sturdier than I expected. I was shocked at how fast it shipped. It was extremely well packaged. I have not seen this type of care in shipping for a long time. I am very happy with the product especially at the price. It had several features I was looking for: 1. It is rigid to the hitch with no flopping. 2. The bikes can be securely locked to the carrier. 3. The unit can easily be locked to the hitch (with the additional locking bolt that I would recommend purchasing. 4. When not in use it can easily be stored FLAT in the storage area of my RV without taking up a lot of room. I would highly recommend etrailer and this bike carrier. I will be doing additional business with etrailer in the future! 485523

I used it to haul my bike down to Florida from Minnesota on the back of my RV. With the base being screwed tight to the hitch it traveled with zero problems. Very heavily built. Stores flat against the wall in the storage area underneath. I am extremely pleased with this product!

Review from a similar Swagman Original in Hitch Bike Racks

I have been using this rack for a couple of seasons. Maybe a total of about five trips with the bikes mounted behind my trailer to a "CURT 4" BUMPER RECEIVER". I was so happy that I found a system to carry four bikes on my trailer. However the last trip that I used this product I lost all four bikes on Interstate 95. The pin/bolt sheered and I was dragging the bikes for a few miles before I realized what had happened. The situation was extreemly dangerous. I had to get out of my tow vehicle on the highway and disassemble the mangled bikes. I have come to realize that carrying bikes behind your trailer is very dangerous and this product is not adequate to do the job. I feel that the manufacturer should not be recommending to their customers that this product can be mounted behind a trailer. Please do your research before mounting or carrying anything behind your trailer. 30017

Some advice to anyone who may be using this rack. Please note that the weight limit is 35lbs. per bike. Always load the heaviest bike closest to the vehicle or trailer and the lightest bike on the cradle furthest from the vehicle.

Had a bad experience with this product myself. Installed a trailer hitch on the back of my Fifth Wheel so I could use this rack. I put four mountain bikes on this rack and drove 145 miles. got out of the truck and the vertical bar had bent about five inches and bikes were all scratched up and heading for the pavement. product not strong enough for trailer usage.

  • How to Carry Four Bikes and Tow Pop-Up Camper
We do have a potential solution for you, though the Swagman Original 4 Bike Towing Rack # S64675 does not allow a rise in the shank. The way this rack works is actually that the hitch ball gets attached to the rack, which is why you can't have a rise or drop when using it. Instead, the best option, assuming your pop-up camper is an A-frame, is to use the Stromberg Carlson Bike Bunk Trailer-Mounted Bike Rack Carrier for A-Frame Trailers # CC-275 with the Swagman Original - 4 Bike Rack...

  • How To Carry Womens Bikes on the Swagman Original Towing Bike Rack # S64675
For attaching womens, childrens, or alternative frame bikes to the Swagman Original bike rack, # S64675, I recommend using the Swagman bike adapter bar, # 64005. This will allow you greater ground clearance and to carry the bikes more level. I have included a link to a video showing how it works.

  • Dual Hitch Reciever Recommendation for Carrying a Bike Rack and Flat Towing a 1997 Jeep Wrangler
I believe I have a better solution for you to allow you to carry a bike rack and flat tow your 1997 Jeep Wrangler. I would recommend you get a dual hitch adapter like a Roadmaster Dual Hitch Receiver Adapter # RM-077-4. You could then use your tow bar on the lower opening and then carry a bike rack on the top opening. For a 4 bike rack by Swagman that would work well with the # RM-077-4 check out the Swagman Trailhead 4 Bike Carrier # S63380. Check out the review video I attached for...

  • Bike Rack Recommendation that Allows Use of a Cargo Carrier
I have a better solution for you, you would want the Swagman Traveler XCS # S64664. This rack will attach to the shank of your cargo carrier that is in the hitch of your vehicle. I attached a review video for you to check out. The Swagman Original - Folding 4 Bike Towing Rack # S64675 that you referenced does not have an additional hitch opening at the end of the shank so a cargo carrier would not be able to install into it.

  • Bike Rack Recommendation for the Front of an A-Frame Trailer
First you will need a receiver on the front of the trailer if you want to use a hitch bike rack. We actually have the Bike Bunk # CC-275 but it is limited to 100 pounds total weight. Otherwise what I recommend is to use # D210 which has a receiver and ball mount platform allowing you to tow the trailer and carrier a bike rack with bikes. We also have some towing bike racks # S64675 and # S63390 you might be interested in. If you keep the bikes on the tow vehicle then you will not be...

  • Choosing Bike Rack to be Used While Towing a Camper
The Dual Hitch Receivers such as part # RM-077-2 cannot be used for towing a trailer. These receivers are meant for use with a towbar carrying a rolling load and an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier. We offer a Curt Ball Mount with 2 inch Receiver, part # D210, which should work for your needs. This ball mount has a tongue weight capacity of 750 lbs, so the trailers tongue weight and the weight of the bike carrier plus the weight of the bikes cannot exceed that figure. Another...

  • Can Thule Spare Me Bike Carrier Be Mounted On Spare Tire At Rear Of Popup Camper
The spare-mount bike racks we offer are not designed to be used on any towed trailer but I do have a solution for you. If you have a 2 inch trailer hitch I recommend a towing bike carrier like the Swagman Original Towing Bike Rack, part # S64675. This attaches to the ball mount in your trailer hitch and allows you to be able to carry up to 4 bikes between the rear of your vehicle and the camper. A longer ball mount is needed for this bike rack. You can check out part # 2736 or part...

  • Availability Of A Bike Rack that Can Be Used While Towing a Trailer
I do have some choices of three bike racks and four bike racks that can be used with towing a trailer. All of the bike racks that are available to be used with towing a trailer will need to be used on a Class III, 2 inch trailer hitch. The Swagman XC 2 Bike Carrier, part # S64650, will not work as a towing bike rack. I would recommend the Swagman Original 4-Bike Towing Rack, part # S64675. This is a four bike rack that mounts on the ball mount. If you have an existing ball mount and...
