The weight capacities may be there, but backing down the ramp may be problematic depending on the angle and how far in the trailer has to be in the water before the ski can be launched.

Me again. The above pic is for the hitch I installed. Its very good thick metal, took about an hour onto a 2001 bmw, the wifes car.

by:

This hitch has made my life so easy, I don't have to shove my dirty mountain bike into the car anymore. The installation was easy and all the parts were provided. I was especially happy with the quick shipping, I got it one day before anticipated date of arrival. I couldn't be happier with this purchase. Thanks guys.

PS: the installation video was a brilliant touch.

by:

It's a great lightweight hitch to attach my bike rack to. Installation was relatively easy with some drilling into my spare tire well but the instructions were good and the spare tire well has been leak tight for over a year. The hitch is relatively inconspicuous.

by:

Took about 2 hours, and I was a BMW dealer technician at a time when a ton of these were coming into the shop. Bumper cover needs to be removed. I applied ultra black silicone in all holes drilled to prevent rusting of the exposed metal. Only issue with the kit was the left front bracket in the spare tire well hit the the well wall. Just used an angle grinder to grind a small corner of the bracket.

Seems well made. The reason I graded this as a 3 star is because I needed to make a couple modifications for it to work on my 2004 BMW 325xi wagon.. Everything lined up great until I got to the 2 small rectangular inner wheel well brackets.. They were too long, and would of run into the side wall of the wheel well.. I needed to trim about an 1/8" off of one end of each of them.. Then i trimmed a 45 degree cut on one corner of each.. A little paint, and ready to go.. Luckily I have a metal chop saw and was able to modify fairly easily.. In the video they are using a 2004 325 sedan without a problem.. Same year car. Maybe there is a slight difference in the wagon that was not accounted for when manufacturing this kit.. None the less, seems like it will work fine now.

by:

Nice hitch and very easy to install. No problems, and all the necessary parts were there. Even though it's just a Class 1 hitch, for what I am wanting to pull with it, it will work great, Thanks! ;-)

by:

I have not finished the installation yet, but am pleased at the simplicity and appearance of the receiver. I followed the tracking and it said it would arrive at around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday and the UPS driver pulled up at 3:28 p.m. I was amazed that it was so accurate. Thanks, I can't wait to have it installed and hook up my trailer and head down the road.

2003 BMW 325xi

My car is a 2003 BMW model 325XI. The installation instructions were followed but the hitch ended up too far forward. This was caused by the brackets (part CM-CP127). I had no choice as to where they were installed and the end result is that the hitch is too far forward. It would have been simple for the bolt holes in the bracket to have been placed about 2" more to the rear. There was not enough clearance for the flat plates (part CM-SP109) on the forward part of the tire well. I had to shim them with washers. My receiver will have to be modified but I still don't know if there will be enough clearance between the bumper and the ball. I m really disappointed.

I understand your problem, luckily I have not drilled holes yet. The manufacturer should address this issue. I am returning mine.

This is a good product, for an imperfect towing application. I used my hitch to tow 1-2 bicycles on a Saris bike rack. On the BMW it is difficult to install and remove the rack on account of how recessed the hitch pin is on the trailer mount.

I don't fault the hitch mount for this, rather its simply not a great car to use to haul bicycles, I knew when I installed the rack.

Product, installation instruction, and support from E trailers was very good. Thank you!

Perfect fit. Super easy to install. I love it. This is the third hitch I have purchased from you and have never been disappointed.

This hitch has been perfect since the day it was installed. i would absolutely buy it again

by:

I've purchased a few hitches from etrailer in the past, and this particular hitch about a year ago. Pricing, quality and shipping are always right on-point, and support is stellar as well. Installed it myself, as I've done with the others, and it was straight-forward, well-instructed, and quick. Hitch is more or less seamless, and allowed us to add a bike-hitch for adventures further away from home. Great company to work with.

by:

Ms Sarah took the time to explain very clearly and professionally what I needed.
I have not installed the hitch yet but my order was complete.

by:

Very good hitch that's working well! Video helps clarify installation, which was relatively easy overall. I made a template of the hitch mounting holes on heavy paper, so I was able to drill the mounting holes from inside the trunk, since I don't have a lift. ETrailer is a nice, helpful company to deal with ! Will order again !

  • Questions About Tongue Weight Capacity Of Curt C11174 Hitch On 2003 BMW 330i Sedan
Hey Jim, thanks for reaching out. I see you already ordered the Curt # C11174 hitch from us which is correct for your 2003 BMW 330i Sedan. I did want to reply to your concerns though. You are correct that the weight on your trailer hitch can be exaggerated by bumps or dips in the road, but you may be over thinking it a bit. The tongue weight ratings for trailer hitches are calculated based on normal driving conditions. If the roads where you live are anything like ours here in Missouri,...

Hello Zach, thanks for reaching out. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11174 you were looking at is only for the 1999 BMW 3 Series Sedan. This will not fit the 1998 BMW 323is coupe E36 chassis. I took a look at the 1up website and the bike rack in question. It does show it fits 1-1/4 inch trailer hitches but does not say if that includes Class I and II hitches or just Class II hitches. Also there were no measurements to determine if the rack would clear the rear of the vehicle. I looked for a phone number to call them but they did not have one listed. • Difference Between Curt Trailer Hitches C11174 & C11178 and Bike Rack Options for 2009 BMW 560i
The visible difference between the Curt # C11178 and the Curt # C11174 is the design of that larger plate. • Trailer Hitch for a 2004 BMW 3-Series Convertible
Since your 2004 BMW 3-series is a convertible the only hitch option for it is Curt Class I hitch # C11178. Hitch # C11174 is not a fit for convertible models. If you want to use the hitch for an accessory such as a bike rack or cargo carrier then you have to make sure the accessory is rated for use with a Class I trailer hitch. Also, with a bike rack, you are limited to 2 bikes maximum on a Class I hitch. Curt also says you have to use stabilization strap # 18050 when using this hitch...

A technical note from Curt states that all non-trailer loads - bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth - should be supported with stabilizing straps like part # 18050 Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from Curt. Since your 2001 BMW 325xi isn't an actual M model the Curt hitch part # C11174 that you referenced would technically fit if it wasn't for the aftermarket bumper. Since this hitch hasn't been tested with that bumper I can't say for certain what it would take to make the hitch fit. No, you do not have to drill into the the bumper on your BMW 3 Series but you do have to drill 8 holes in the spare tire well. You may also want to use a sealant to ensure no water will enter the spare tire compartment after installation. The ball mount pin and clip are included. So after installation, you will only need trailer wiring, # C59496, and a properly sized hitch ball, # 19256 or # 19258, to be ready to tow.
