The trailer hitch that is designed for your 1999 BMW 323is Coupe is the Curt Hitch, part # C11177.
This is a Class l hitch and it has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. A technical note from Curt states that all non-trailer loads - bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth - should be supported with stabilizing straps like part # 18050 Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from Curt.
I have attached a link to an installation video for this hitch you can check out.
If you are looking for a bike rack to place in the hitch I recommend the Thule Helium Aero 2 Bike Rack, part # TH9042PRO. This aluminum bike rack can carry 2 bikes that weigh up to 35 lbs each. This rack will tilt when not loaded for easy access to the rear cargo area of the vehicle. It also features the One-Key System that secures the bike rack tot he vehicle and uses an integrated cable that secures the bikes to the rack.
If you are planning on carrying bikes with alternative frames like kids bikes or women's bikes I recommend using an adapter bar like part # 64005. This attaches between the seat post and the handlebar stem and allows the bike to be carried more level in the carrier while providing additional ground clearance. I have attached a product review video for this adapter bar.
