Don't strain yourself lifting skis and snowboards onto the roof of your vehicle - just add the Thule Tram to your existing dual-arm, hitch-mounted bike rack. This adapter lets you carry up to 6 pairs of skis or 4 snowboards upright on your bike rack, maximizing your carrying capacity.

Thule Tram installed with rubber cradle straps

This adapter installs easily on your bike rack using the existing cradles and rubber straps. The upper arms of the Tram rest in the bike cradles and are held in place with the rubber straps.

Thule Tram mounting bracket from view

The Tram is also anchored to the upright mast of the bike rack with the included U-bolt, bracket, and hand knobs. If you are mounting the Tram to the Thule Spare Me spare-tire-mounted rack, use the included socket head cap screws to anchor the Tram frame to the bike carrier.

Thule Tram padded arms

The Tram has ultra-soft rubber pads on the hinged arms. These pads help to hold your skis and snowboards in place and protect your gear from scratches and abrasions during transport.

Thule Tram easy-to-open arms

The hinged arms of the carrier open easily with large push buttons. These buttons make the arms easy to operate even when you're wearing gloves. The arms can also be adjusted to carry skis and snowboards with larger bindings. Simply slide the back clip of the hinged arm to the outside setting.

Thule Tram lock cores

The Tram includes a Thule One-Key lock core on each hinged arm. These locks ensure the security of your skis and snowboards, and they can be swapped out to make all your Thule products keyed alike. You can also use a Thule cable lock (TH538XT- sold separately) to secure the Tram to your hitch-mounted bike rack if your bike rack doesn's have a cable lock built in.

Video Transcript for Thule Tram Ski and Snowboard Carrier Adapter Review

Today, we'll be reviewing the Thule Tram Ski and Snowboard Carrier Adapter for hitch mounted bike racks, part number TH9033. This adapter allows you to carry skis and snowboards on a variety of dual arm hitch mounted bike racks. It has large locking pushpins which make loading easy. It has soft padding which protect your skis and snowboards from getting scratched up. The adapter has two points of easy installation, the first being the cradles of your dual arm bike rack and the other being the mast of the bike rack, which the adapter clamps to. Now, let's go ahead and show you how it's installed.

We'll be using the Thule Apex Bike Carrier for this review. We'll first make sure the straps in the cradles closest to the vehicle are undone. Now, we'll take the tram and set it on top of the bike rack. You'll also want to make sure the clamp point is pressed up against the mast. To ensure this, you may have to make adjustments to the cradles as necessary.

With that done, we can now take the straps and bring them over the tram, securing them topside. Now, we'll move on to the clamp. You'll take these two long bolts and slide them through these holes toward the vehicle. Next, we'll take the clamp plate and fit it to the back of the bolts, tightening it down with the hand knobs. With the tram tightened down, we'll unlock the large push button and open up the arms.

Now, we can lower the skis and snowboard. Once loaded, we'll lock up the arms, and for added security, the Apex Bike Carrier comes with a locking cable as well to secure the tram to the carrier. That will do it for part number TH9033, the Thule Tram Ski and Snowboard Carrier Adapter from Thule.

We ordered product 6 days before our MLK weekend ski trip. etrailer.com expedited the order (without my prompting) which was a nice touch. The product arrived in time and it took about 1 hour to put together (probably will be quicker for the more technically gifted ...). We fit 5 skis on the rack with no problems. It takes a bit of time to get used to putting the skis on the rack because they fit upright (gravity ...) however that shouldn't be an impediment to buying this product. The only potential downside is that the bottom of your skis will pick up a some road dust/dirt so you should wipe down the skis at the end of your journey. Again, you should also do this with skis fitted to conventional roof racks. 114494

Great product-although it comes with some assembly required! I have a Yakima 2 bike rack, and Yakima only makes a ski rack for their 4 bike models. Have not transported with skis yet, but it is well made, and feels sturdy. Skis do project a bit above the roof line (Jeep Grand Cherokee), something to be aware of. As always, great experience with etrailer! 458677

We recently purchased the Thule Tram Ski and Snowboard Carrier Adapter from etailer.com, and they made this such a delightful experience. We received personalized and real time emails from their Customer Service and Operations departments, and they really cared about us having an enjoyable experience. As for the product itself, we recently got back from our first ski trip with the carrier, and it worked perfectly. We could easily put 3 sets of skis and poles on the carrier (with space for more), and the rack was very stable, even after a 4 hour interstate drive. If you decide to install/build this carrier yourself, I would recommend finding a youtube video for your specific setup as we found the Thule instructions to be inadequate and challenging (at best) to follow. Great product though, really really happy we purchased it, and purchased it from etrailer.com 111405

This rack works well. I did however need to manufacture a rubber wedge to go between the lower cross bar (TH9033) and the bike rack so the attach point would lay flat against the bike rack. Many thanks to Cathy at etrailer.com for the excellent customer service she provided. 168095

I sold this product. It was very unstable when the wind would catch the skis and snowboard.

It’s a great addition to the bike rack! I used it and it makes things easy. Easy to install, easy to mount the skis and secure. Can’t wait to use it again this winter season. 586329

It has gone through two boarding seasons without any issues. It is fairly easy to use and has the added benefit that you can store the board holder and use it as a bike rack. 498965

Excellent product. We use it for skis and snowboards with no issues. It's a little heavy, but the durable construction makes it worth it. 330028

We were disappointed when we put it on the car and it wouldn't hold 2 wide boards next to each other. We thought it would hold 4 boards and only held 2. ( 3/4 boards for our trip were wide) . We wouldn't have bought it if we knew that. 317556

After a year of use I still enjoy the functionality of this bike/ski rack. The swing arm allows for getting into the rear of vehicle (to biking shoes or ski boots) while the rack is attached! Very easy to use. 250829

Do you have a question about this Ski and Snowboard Rack?

  • Recommended Way to Carry Bikes and Skis by a 2008 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
  • The best option is getting a hitch mounted bike rack such as the Yakima RidgeBack 4 bike rack # Y02458 (which works with both 1-1/4 and 2-inch receiver hitches) and add the Yakima HitchSki snowboard and ski carrier # Y02418. The snowboard and ski carrier will fit multiple other hitch racks, but transporting skis and bikes at the same time on the same rack isn't an option currently. The Thule Tram ski and snowboard carrier # TH9033 is another great option. You can use this carrier with...

  • After speaking with my contact at Thule, he verified that you are correct, the Thule Spare Me 2-Bike Carrier, # TH963PRO, is a new redesign and was made taller, which will not allow for the use of the 987XT Ski and Snowboard Carrier Adapter. For the TH963PRO you can use the Thule Tram Ski and Snowboard Carrier Adapter, # TH9033, which includes a specific bolt to attach to the Spare Me bike rack.

  • Using a Hitch Extender with a Thule Hitch Mounted Bike Rack Ski Carrier Adapter
  • The adapter you are inquiring about attaches to the bike rack not the ski adapter. The ski adapter, part # TH9033, attaches to Thule bike racks. If you have a Thule bike rack, it will work with adapter # HE18. However, you do need to keep in mind your limitations when using the adapter. Using a hitch adapter will reduce your trailer hitch tongue capacity by 50. So if your trailer hitch is rated for 350 pounds of vertical load, you will only be able to load 175 pounds on the hitch. You will...
